Wood for kitchen floor?
I love the look of a wooden kitchen floor, but every time I drop an ice cube or splash water, I wonder if it is really as easy to live with as the salesman assures me. Anybody out there regret putting hardwood in the kitchen?

janetcrawford Never have been sorry for installing wooden floors in kitchen!! They are so much easier to stand on than tile and clean up so easily.

Dytecture I spilled cooking oil on my wood floor over 6 months ago and it didn't seem to cause any issues.

eagledzines I don't like it. I'd rather have stone.

Ed We also had this big concern for the kitchen floor: wood or tiles? Exactly because of the worry of water damage. We still decided on hardwood maple, seamless with the dining and living areas. You just have to be careful. If you accidentally drop an ice cube, or even spill a few drops of water, that's OK. One horror story I heard was my cousin had just installed a new wooden floor, and they left -- I think it was an ice chest ? -- overnight, and the moisture from the bottom damaged the floor, and they had to replace that section. Same thing with your appliances -- fridge, dishwasher, sink and faucet drainage -- make sure they are well maintained, otherwise, if there's leakage, then it could be a problem. :) Also, if you have cabinets in your kitchen, they should install plywood directly underneath the cabinets (and under your appliances, too), so even if there's leakage, the water will first get to your plywood, hopefully you'll notice the leakage before it gets to your nice wood floor :) Please update us with photos of your progress! Which wood are you considering? :)

eagledzines Our water line to the water and ice dispenser in the refrigerator leaked a slow leak and blackened the floor around the refrigerator before we noticed it.
