Family room in need of new layout/design
Here is our family room, which need an update. We recently added the fireplace and the stone wall and need to paint the room and possibly add new furniture. Initially we had hoped to mount the TV over the fireplace, but this did not work out. It has been in the location it is now (under the stairs) and we would like to move it, but to where is the big question. I feel that the furniture we now have, we have the room very segregated and an "empty" space in front of the focal pt of the stone wall. The room shape is an odd one with several doors, and the stairs.
Any ideas re: furniture layout, designs, colors....anything????
Thanks...look forward to the responses.
PS: Couldn't get my doggie off the couch for the pics!!

carolins Love the added touch of the very relaxed and cute dog :-) (we have three labradors who love sleeping on the couch, we don't mind sitting on the floor)

Nice fireplace. What if you put the TV on the wall to the left of the fireplace, next to the French windows. Can't see what the construction on that wall is? The white thing with the brown thing underneath? Assuming the TV can go on that wall, you could perhaps put the chair under the stairs, next to the door on the right and the couch turned 1/4, facing the fireplace, about where the chair is now.

Could that be an option?

(And a bigger rug would look better too.)

kehmcnulty with that said i just saw this while Im waiting for my pizza to arrive, I am going to assume u r taking this pic from another doorway to the room. Can you put the tv on the wall to the left of the plant (they make shelves that pulls out and tilts, switch the hinges on your door so it will open out into the deck, yes? The chair could go a quarter turn into the fireplace, under the stair well. the couch could go somewhat parallel to fireplace infront of the stationary door. (assuming also that one door opens and one does not) so i guess my suggestion is to just get a new tv shelf. keep the old one for electronics put under stairwell too.

sparky86 carolins: We have considered the TV on the wall you suggested, but the sofa facing it would likely obstruct that door and will then leave the area where to furniture is now as empty as the area by the fireplace.
The white thing is a heater and it is over the boxed in footing (hence the ledge)
Between TV and the door you can see, there is another door to a bathroom!!

Kehmcnulty: moving the sofa facing the fireplace was my initial idea but we cannot mount the tv over the fireplace, and that is the dilemma.....to make the room full and cozy where we can enjoy the fireplace and watch tv...

How do I add more photos?

njmomma Love the fireplace, but I think you need to make two separate seating arrangements in this room. One near the fireplace.

Can you move the leather chair to the other side of the ottomans?

kehmcnulty seeing that you misunderstood me sorry, suggested the tv on the wall left of plant not fireplace wall. the sofa would be placed back to where it would sit perpendicular to the door, the first double door which doesn't have a know on it. Or flip flop the idea and put chair there and sofa along wallunder the stairs?

njmomma I think this may work, but measure, measure, measure. You said you needed to buy furniture, well how about a small sectional. Back of the sectional facing the closets? t.v. on left side wall of the fireplace, area rug, Thinking......

sparky86 thanks for the ideas....keep 'em coming....my poor brain is wrecked from trying to come up with a layout.
The two doors seen are not closets, one is to the back porch/laundry room and the other is a bathroom.

kehmcnulty so the tv won't fit on wall between the two doors? chair in front of bookcase and reading corner, buy two chairs or one and ottomon for smaller wall, since you don't want the couch on this wall it will inhibit heat to room, and couch still perpendicular to stationary door, switch hinges to door so it opens to the outside? no? The cable people can come out and change location of cable output? It is a tricky room but the look is gorgeous love the colors and floor.

njmomma Do the door open into the porch and laundry room or open into the living room?

butlera Hi Sparky. Love your fireplace wall. I have a similar family room, although mine isn't as large as yours. It also has similar issues with fireplace wall, french doors and interior doors. We have a sectional sofa, which sort of buts onto the french door we don't use, but also leaves enough space for walking through. Our family room is painted light grey, which works well with the stonework and is airy and relaxing. I have attached some pics so you can see how the sectional works within the limitations.

njmomma Face back of sofa away from doors, t.v. on wall left of fireplace. Floating shelfs on wall around t.v. if you have room.

njmomma Turn the other side of the room into a study, library with two leather recliners or put a poker table and use the chairs for additional seating when you need them. Most poker tables come with tops so that the table has double use. It can also be used as a game room. small pool table, etc. Think out of the box. You already have the dart board up. ;-)

njmomma Let your fireplace be your inspiration for wall color and the color you choose for you sofas, etc. It's a small space so think light and neutral for the walls to expand the space.

sparky86 yes I was thinking a light color for sure

njmomma Please post your project as you go. You would be surprise how things change in decorating as others chime in.

You will get some great ideas from this board.

carolins I have read all the other comments, and yes, the room has a difficult lay-out. I like the idea of a small sectional, although I'm a bit worried about where you'll put it. Can't get the picture in my mind of where it will go, but it could work I guess. (idea for you, there's a free online roomplanner where you can make a layout of your room and place furniture in it so you can get a picture of what will go: http://www.urbanbarn.com/Room-Planner)

So I've been thinking:
if your TV is on one of those turning feet, so you can turn it slightly either way, this could perhaps work:

- sofa where it is now to create a TV area
- the large chair in the left corner next to the fireplace, angled so that it faces towards the stairs/TV
- two smaller chairs in the fireplace area:
* one on the other side of the fireplace, angled towards the French doors. It will be slightly in front of the door, not sure how much you use that door, but you could also place that chair somewhere in between the two doors
* the other chair facing the fireplace, but since it's a smaller chair (felt under the feet!) you could move it around if you'd like to watch tv from it. Or you could get a revolving chair for that spot.

Thus creating two seating areas, one TV-lounge area and one 'conversation' area around the fireplace, but from where you'll be still able to watch TV too.

I'll try to find you some photos of what I'm thinking of furniture wise.
