Ikea kitchens
My husband and I are going to update our kitchen and considering doing an Ikea kitchen. Anyone do one of these? Tips? Is it a good idea? Bad idea? I have heard good things, we only plan to be in our 3 bdrm ranch for another 5 years so we want something we can enjoy and for resale value. Thanks!

Kelly We have used them, they aren't bad cabinets for the price. The styles are fun and contemporary. Just be sure you measure the room correctly or you will have cabinets that do not fit. Measure your walls front and back. Nothing worse then special ordering and having them not be right. We had a customer round up when measuring and the wall was 1" short of fitting the cabinets in.

Dezign Studio Inc This depends on many factors. Are you going to install yourselves, or have it professionally installed.
Also are you planning to change the flooring and back splash, and what about appliances. If you are not changing the flooring, then the footprints of the new cabinets may not match the existing ones. If you guys are handy and can install , then it may be fine, but otherwise it may be better to go for assembled cabinets , then flat boxes. You can also compare pricing and quality at other big box stores.

mccabe414 We are doing a complete gut, floors, backsplash, cabs, appliances, everything. We have done all our own work in the rest of the house (my husband and his dad actually), he is just nervous about cabinet installation, never done that before.

Dezign Studio Inc Then it may be better to go for assembled cabinets, and the difference in the price range for some of them may not be a lot . Check a few options, before finalising , then if you still decide to go for flat boxed cabinets, that have to be assembled before installation, it may not be too difficult as the instructions are quite clear. Good luck.

Kelly Cabinets are not hard really- and I believe all the IKEA have the legs on the base cabinets for leveling. If you can build a straight wall you can hang cabinets. Home Dept had a line of cabinets that you could order- similar to IKEA. We used them in our flip. I'm not sure if they still have them. We did the whole kitchen for $1300. The doors were gorgeous dark wood. The only thing I wasn't completely thrilled with was the cabinets were a beech wood.

Karen Levy This is a great post, thanks!! I'm contemplating an IKEA kitchen. I will want to hire the installers to do the whole thing. It seems that IKEA prices can't be beat. Is it worth my time to shop Lowe's/Home Depot? I had a designer do all the measurements on the space.

Cancork Floor Inc. I love Ikea! I lived in Germany when I purchased my kitchen for an apartment. I had to kick out the "boys" (they couldn't read a 3D pictograph so I had to step in...took me 14 hours to assemble) so that I could put it together myself. Then "dad-in-law" decided to "wire" the oven (German appliances are "hard wired" to the circuitry - they are NOT plug ins like N. America!) and he blew out my heating plate. Just to save $80 Euro ($120) on an electrician! No the point!

Feel free to shop Lowe's/HD. They have the "same idea" but with out the "cool" factor and without the selection! The prices are comparable but selection of finishes is quite limited.
