January 20, 2012 in Design Dilemma
We've decided on a slipcover sofa. Now, we need to choose a fabric and need help. We don't care for the over-wrinkly look. We don't have small children but do have a dog who sometimes digs/likes to rub his face in the sofa. We are retired, not overly messy people, but don't want to baby our furniture either. What kind of fabric might be best for us? We're considering mfgr's PB, Ethan A, Four Seasons, Kinkaid and Lexington. Thanks for any help.

The manufacturer is more to do with the durability of the piece - you get what you pay for. Ethan Allen or Lexington are better brands in my opinion. Fabric wise you should go for a cotton or cotton blend fabric. Linen will always look wrinkled no matter what. ook at the fabric content and ask to take a sample of the fabric home and sit on it a few times to see how it holds up...

The best pet and child friendly fabrics for furniture are very tight-weaved microfiber fabric or microsuede. The weave is too tight for the cats and dogs to get their claws into, and the fabric is very easy to clean, you can wipe spots with just warm water. They come in a variety of colors and prints that don’t show pet hair as easily as solid colors dose.

I have always used white cotton or cotton blend fabrics for my slipcovers. They look great and can be machine washed and bleached. Ethan Allen has some great fabrics as well as Lee Industries who has many customizable pieces. Price point for Lee may be a little higher than Ethan Allen. Crate and Barrel even has a great line of slipcovered sofas made by Modern Concepts. I think their white slipcover fabric is called deso snow. I have it and it has held up great with kids and animals - over 5 years.

A company we love for slipcovered sofas Is Rags Home Furnishings. The pictured sofa can be made in a 3 cushion as well and they have great fabrics to choose from.
I would check the durability of the fabric by looking at their double rub count. Here is a link you might want to check out that has some information from Kravet fabrics about fabric durability http://www.ibbdesign.com/blog/?p=2617
This is the link to the furniture company I mentioned http://www.usarags.com/Sofas/pages/5919%20Lindsay%20Sofa.htm

You should really look into using a Sunbrella fabric. They were originally designed for outdoor furniture but they have come a long way and the ones put out by Joe Ruggerio for Miles Talbot have a beautiful hand...you would never know it was Sunbrella. But the best part is they are completely washable and you can even put bleach on it and it won't change the color. I use it a lot especially when children and pets are involved. Check into it, you will be amazed and you'll love it.

I have a dog that does this: LINEN ROCKS with dogs. I'm talking the heavy duty belgium linen. We have a slipcovered camel back mitchell gold sofa with linen. When we first got her she would pee out of excitement-she was only 8 months and her bladder wasn't matured entirely. We trained her to not do that but we washed the linen alot and steamed it once back on the sofa . We also have 4 cats. Linen can really take a beating. And it doesn't get holes in it as easily as some cottons and even some cheap denims.

Just a suggestion…Rue La La, My Habit, and One King's Lane have the most incredible buys. You just have to sign up and be patient.

Last week, Rue La La had Mitchell Gold furniture and the white slipcovered sofa, which retails for $3800.00 was selling for $1200.00. $9.95 delivery charge !!!!!

Otherwise, my recommendation for the toughest, cleanable fabric ever which is so rich looking is Ultra Suede or Sensuede.

You gotta use heavy weight fabric for pets. There are ratings when you shop for fabrics-you want to look at how many double rubs the fabric takes until it gets a hole into it. Don't do anything less than 100,000 -150,000 double rubs in my opinion. You also need to check on if the fabric will pill. I've used sunbrella on one slipcover for a sunny room and it did pill on me and I was disappointed.

To Ikeltz... We're very happy with our Alexandria sofa. We tend to sit in the same place all the time so once in a while I rotate the cushions - the 3 from the sofa and the 2 from the love seat. I've had to wash the slipcovers a couple of times and they come out fine. We bought 2 chairs too - they are also super comfy and they swivel and rock. This pic shows our furniture a little, I shot it mostly to show someone the TV...

I recommend a leather sofa since you have pets. It's easy to clean and the fur comes right off. I have a leather sofa and loveseat and two dogs. I did't allow the dogs on the furniture for the first few years after we bought them but now I do. Any dirt or fur that gets on them wipes right off.

Surefit makes slipcovers in 2 and 3 piece sets (seat cushion, frame and back cushions for detachable). Supposidly it basicly eliminates the need for adjustment you have with the typical slipcover. I can't say I know anything about ethan allen slipcovers and if they offer this feature, but of course there decor is lovely and high quality. I think if I was paying the money for an ethan allen slipcover however, I would probably just invest in a new sofa as I'm sure they are costly.

Judy, thanks so much for answering my question regarding the Alexandria sofa. We are definitely going to go with a sofa and loveseat in the Alexandria line, except we are going to get the Alexandria Grand, which is just a little deeper and longer. I love your chairs! The colors you chose are lovely. Now I have to decide what fabric. I love the oatmeal colored linen, so we'll see.

Just don't make the mistake I did . . . two beautiful EA chairs with fab heavy cotton burnt orange upholstery (what can I tell you, I love orange). They faded terribly because I had them in a west-facing window. They are still in excellent condition but they look way more shabby than chic because of the uneven color. Wish the sales guy had given me a heads-up. Heads-up!

I am also looking at a slipcovered sofa for our beach house. I am leaning towards the Pottery Barn Comfort in a washed linen/cotton ivory. I am debating whether to look at the Crate and Barrel Willow as well. The only thing is their white is really white (I prefer off white/ivory) unless you special order. It also only comes with the straight arms (no option for rolled which I would order from PB). I will have to look at sample fabrics. I read negative reviews online about the PB but you can't always believe what you read. Any recommendations? Thanks.

Pardon my redundancy, but I'm super happy with my Four Seasons Alexandria. I've had occasion to wash a cover or two and they turn out great and are easy to get back on. The FS white is more of an ivory than white-white. We looked at PB too, and liked them, but ultimately went with FS. Good luck.

I've had a Four Seasons sofa and chair for several years. I also have three dogs and three cats. The slip covers are constantly in the washing machine and they have held up beautifully. They are the aqua mattress ticking style. The only problem I've had is the zippers on the pillows do break. Even so, I couldn't be happier. I'm ready for a new set of slip covers but the ones I have still look great!

They are comparably or even better priced than the similar PB sofa and I was told Four Seasons is much better quality. I think I found my sofa! Thanks for the recommendation!

Hi Judy! Just came across this while searching for reviews on four seasons furniture! We tried out the sofa in the showroom but with down feathers and thought it would break down to fast. But they don't have the standard pillows to test out, so I'm a little hesitant to order without fanny testing! Also they didn't have a chair in the Alexandria line. Which one did younger. The one they showed was to low for my husband. He isn't a giant, just felt like it sat low! Glad to hear your happy with the couches! Makes me feel better!

I am so happy I found this thread! I've been looking for a sofa for over a year on and off. Love Miles Talbot Shabby Chic, but a little it of my price range. I've been looking at the Four Seasons Bertha sectional for 6 months....just want to make sure it's comfortable....I have fibromyalgia some days much worse than others, so I want something I can sink into. I wasn't sure of the brand, but after reading that you still love your furniture, Judy, I'm going to go buy it tomorrow! Thank you so much for all the comments everyone....very helpful.

We got ours delivered last fall at our beach house and love it. We got the down wrapped cushions and the 44 inch deep (my husband insisted for more room to get comfy and curl up)so it has that "loose" lived in look but that's fine for a cottage style beach house. Very comfortable - we even got a sleep sofa but you'd never know the difference sitting on it. We got the Daniel.

I got the Alexandria sofa last year. The price was affordable and we are very happy with it. It's a bit higher than most sofa's so keep that in mind. After reading here we purchased the standard cushions,. I loved the down filled and initially regretted the decision. But after a few months, they have broken it and feel just as good, without the upkeep of having to fluff. I purchased the slipcover in Dolby Oatmeal, 100% recycled cotton and it has held up well through new babies and cats. Hair sometimes sticks to it and I used tape to get it off. A few small stains got removed with spotcleaning vinegar and water. No regrets on this sofa.

I think I need to find it at a different store - the sales person said I couldn't get down-wrapped! I also contacted the company through their website to see who else carries it, and I haven't heard back from them, which concerns me. But, it was the most comfortable couch I've tried - except the Rachel Ashwell. I was thinking of just getting upholstered rather than slipcovered. I've had many slipcovered sofas, and have never taken them off to clean - I have been putting quilts on top to protect from the cats and dogs - But I'm looking at 100% poly, not cotton or linen, so I would think it will be fine. The Bertha - with T-cushions - and a high back, which is great for resting your head. Thank you again everyone!! Bath... where is your beach house? I live in SW FL on the gulf, so my house is like a beach house... very casual. At 60 years old, I feel like this will be my first really grown-up couch - except my kids will be able to sleep on it when they come to visit.

Denise - you should definitely be able to order the down wrapped if that's what you want. We had the option with or without. I love the lived in, casual look it gives and after looking at tons of pictures of similar sofas on this site decided to go that route. My beach house is at the Delaware beaches, it's a small place so we have done everything very simply, trying to stay as minimalistic as possible and have done everything in a very coastal style which I feel these sofas really fit. Hope you love your sofa once you get it!

I have 2 Four Seasons Alexandria sofas, 1 Sarah chair and 1 Emily chair. They are all 10 years old and look new. The covers wash fabulously. I am buying one of their love seats tomorrow for my sunporch. I have 2 boys, 2 dogs and no complaints with Four Seasons. I need to replace the slipcovers on one sofa as a new puppy chewed it. I have the down blend on one sofa and the standard cushion on the other. The down blend is firmer (even after 10 years). I can't bring myself to buy another brand as these have done better than any other furniture I've ever had.

Amy.... so the down blend is still 'kicking'? Moo, I DO have an Arhaus here, and I fell in love with a slip covered Baldwin sofa there - but it's a bit pricier... and I'm not thrilled with the salespeople there. I ALMOST bought it from that calalogue (can't think of the name of it now)... and a go-to couch is what I want. Like an old down bed to rest my aching bones!! I like the height of the back of the Bertha sectional... and the T-cushions. I'm going to go to a different store - where the salesperson knows a little more - like that I can order down cushions! I really appreciate all the comments!! This is so much fun! I don't think I've ever been on a 'board'!

I ordered the Bertha sectional last weekend. I was going to get an aqua 100% poly fabric, but decided to go with a new matlesse fabric in white. I wanted a color, because I've had white before and wanted a change. But, white can be bleached! Which is why I had white before - 2 dogs, 3 cats. I can't wait to get it. I was also concerned with the poly 'pilling'. That fabric was discountinued in July, and I'm wondering why. Maybe it was just the color - it was Ferina.

Looks like a lot of Four Seasons users…we are looking to purchase a FS grande sofa, reg sofa, and a chair. Have never had slipcovers before and little concerned about them looking tidy and the fabric needs to be durable on the grande sofa. Someone above suggested 100,000 rubs, but none of the FS fabrics I asked about topped 25,000 rubs. Had read that 25,000 is considered very durable. Also concerned that FS is not 8 way hand tied frame construction, have never had a drop in coil before. Also, someone said 44 depth sofa, which is what I would like also, but FS is only 41 and only on the grande collections. Bottom line…looking for quality, sturdy and comfortable sofa. Is Four Seasons where I should be looking?
One more questions…anyone buy the Devin sofa instead of the Alexandria? I am petite and felt the Alexandria cushions set a little high…feet did not touch the floor when I sat on it.

Sorry to ask so many questions! :)

Four Seasons does an 8 way hand tied option. It's an upcharge. I have it on the Alexandria sofa I have with down blend cushions in my living room. I just bought the Alexandria loveseat with down blend cushions and 8 ways hand tied for my sunporch. I picked the Sunbrella fabric option this time. All of my fabrics have held up well with 2 boys and 2 dogs.

The Alexandria does sit high. It was a bit of a shock once I got it in my home, but adjusted to the look now. I have 3 cats and 2 new grandchildren and we use it hard. I have a light beige color in a recycled cotton (but not the washable one) and it is holding up well. I was able to spot clean with vinegar and water and it came out perfect. I didn't get the down blend. I initially wish I did, but the cushions are very comfortable and it's not a sloppy look. They stay put without having to fluff up.

I have the Daniel which is 44 in deep. We got the down wrapped cushions. I'll admit, it does have a slightly loose, lived in look but we knew that getting the slipcovered down cushions. I don't really mind it, it's in a beach house and I feel that's the look I was going for. I am guessing if you don't go with the down, the fabric stays stiffer. I would have preferred not such a deep sofa but my husband insisted so I let him win. It does give plenty of space to curl up or stretch out and is super comfy!

If anyone is still looking for Four Seasons Furniture, you can find it at our store and on-line at http://www.americancountryhomestore.com/sofas_c_365.cfm. Our designers would be happy to answer any questions. Four Seasons just came out with Sunbrella & other performance fabrics which have a 5 year warranty and are a great choice for dogs & kids. They also have a great alternative to feather & down called Comfort Chic cushions. The HR foam is surrounded by a micro denier fiber called Trillium - feels like down, but doesn't break down.

Here's a summer cottage rental in Avalon, NJ, that we put in a Four Seasons sofa, chair & ½ and ottoman, with Outdura Longitude Buttercup fabric, which has lasted over 5 seasons of use by renters.

I'm SO glad to have found this link. I've been staring at PB Comfort Grand Sofa for 2 years but haven't been able to find any one who has one! I really love the slipcover look but didn't know if they were worth the price and held up. I also wanted to go ivory white - not white - white (but I have a black haired dog) and a family that tends to eat while watching tv, so slipcovers aren't a pain to wash and put back on? I have always bought leather couches but the color always faded from sunlight. Should I be looking at Sunbrella fabric because it won't fade? Is the fabric comfortable or stiff? Did anyone see the slipcovered white couches done in terry cloth. They were in a recent magazine (beach cottages) and looked very comfortable. Are they available anywhere? Would the fabric hold up? Thank you for all the great input!
