Need help with furniture suggestions & window coverings for loft
we are a family of four. Here is our 2nd floor loft (family room), size is 15'x15'. This is the most used room in our house. We have one young child who uses this room for crafts & play so we'd like it to be more functional & bit more updated with updated furnishings, paint, wall art. any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated. Our style is eclectic and traditional.

*We'd like to replace this sectional but not sure what to replace with?
*not sure what colour to paint walls, or what art to add to the walls?

*Far right window has a vaulted ceiling & angled transom. makes looking at this window very unpleasant. Find this window hard to find the right window covering for, any suggestions? Roman shades or curtains?

Manon Floreat What a great room! The sectional is nice looking, but might be a bit large for the space. Maybe a sofa with a chaise would work better for you and your family. Since this is your family room, I recommend some color - after all it is a place for conversation and activity - not meditation! Perhaps a charcoal to medium gray chaise sectional with some orange and/or aqua/turquoise accents in pillows and accessories. I can see a natural fiber rug with a soft flokati accent rug on top. Instead of a traditional coffee table, you can find some nice storage cubes with hard tops that serve a coffee tables as well as additional storage.

I think you should totally use your little one's art in this space! Children's art is so fresh and honest and it totally works with the ecclectic family room vibe. Maybe his/her art table could go over near the vaulted window - then it would be out of the way when you come up the stairs.

Eclectic spaces usually have kind of a collected look, so a neutral wall color is usually the most versatile. I think I'd also go for roman shades either neutral to match the wall or a fun print that means something to you.

Attached is an option for furniture arrangement. I'm excited for you - have fun!

Manon Floreat Oops here's the floor plan

Linda Ladouceur Since your entertainment unit is stark white, I would stay away from dark coloured paint...it may stick out like a sore thumb, but a soft beige would warm the room up. A nice complementary area rug would do wonders although your floors are beautiful. But the rug may add to the comfort and family feel your looking for. Richer coloured window treatments again complimenting the wall colour you choose, would warm it up even more, maybe a side swag on the single window by the unit. And finally, I love your sofa!! Looks so comfy, changing the cushions may be all you need...All in all you have a great space. Good luck!!

mitsy What size rug would fit this room?

B Fein Interior Design I would slide the existing sectional a little further away from the entry - past that window bump-out on the left if your facing the sectional. So it's hugging the entry and some of it is facing you as you come into the room.

Closest standard size to 15' x 15' is 9 x 12.

inkwitch I doubt that anything else would function as well as the entertainment center you have. It's a nice design, has plenty of room for storing toys and crafts for the child. If you painted the inside of the 2 glassed sections, it would give you some architectural interest.

The room could use some color. There are shades that would glow with the light, but not overwhelm. Try "Light Copper" -- Can't recall the paint co. but you can find the chip at Lowe's. It's one of those wonderful colors that changes with light; looks apricot, cream, golden, depending on the light. It would go well with your current furniture. This is a family room; you can afford to be adventurous here.

Once you get the walls painted, you'll find a rug that works. Something lighter rather than darker as those floors are dark enough. Great floors, but they really darken the room.

Roman shade over the smaller window. Roman shade and curtains on the larger window. They don't have to match. Houzz has done several ideabooks on this concept.

Child's art will be delightful.

mitsy how does one move entertainment unit when cable and internet are on the wall where entertainment unit is currently located?
love the idea of painting the inside of the cabinets, would you suggest even wallpapering?

fairfield I like the sectional, maybe sunny yellow walls, a wall gallery of framed kids art, white wooden shutters on the window, a few large plants - could help distract from roof angled transition

T Williams I would put a nice soft neutral rug and a distressed style coffee table that can be played on and still look nice. I like your sectional just pull it closer to the Entertainment center in front of the smaller window wall. Use the small area under the tall window for the play table and maybe add a slim desk/sofa table with a bench that can be pulled out to sit on if there is room behind the sectional. For the windows I would put roman shades that can be lowered when needed for sun/privacy control but not be too fussy, I would not put drapes. I have attached a picture of our room with the roman shades on the windows that we can lowered when needed but still look nice and give good contrast on the white. Still a room in progress adding the Roman shades to the front large window soon. We used a nice neutral khaki paint color to highlight the white trim work. Very nice room just needs to be pulled together.

Counter Dimensions As this is a family room, I would stick with soothing colors. There are some great blues in the Benjamin Moore Affinity series Like AF-520 or 530. They are deeper, richer colors abut still tend for a calm feel. If you paint the insides of the the white cabinet black, it will tone down the big white "thing" in the room. However, it is a nice piece and should be highlighted. Put down a nice rug with colors from the wall and the sofa in it. I would not get rid of the sectional.....it seems quite family friendly. I would however add a nice ottomon or maybe two of them and it will allow for relaxing on the couch. Some good pillows with blues and browns. On the wall behind the sectional I would put up many large and small family photos, all in black frames. They dont have to be the same frame, just black. The wall with the cute little green table needs a big chunky piece.

Good luck!!

Pegasus Lighting I know you just asked for furniture & window covering suggestions (and there are a lot of fantastic suggestions above), but couldn't resist asking if you'd considered adding lighting to those cabinets. It's such a beautiful entertainment unit, and incorporating in-cabinet lighting would really add warmth to the room. Glass cabinets set the perfect stage for accent lighting. I am attaching a photo of a kitchen with illuminated cabinet space so you can visualize!

Manon Floreat Wow - Tracey Williams, that's a lovely room! Did you create it yourself?

Mitsy, as far as moving the entertainment center; you can either call your cable company and have them install additional outlets OR you can go to your local electronics store, get cable and extend yourself. Make sure you get white cable - it's less obtrusive - and fasteners to secure it to the base of the wall. Doing it yourself might night look as good but it will save you a few dollars. Most cable companies will do it for less than $100.

T Williams Manon - Thank you. Yes all created by me and hours on houzz for inspiration! When we bought this house it had a great floor plan with high ceilings and wood floors but very minimal trim and detail. We added the built ins and fireplace mantle and all the trim around the windows and baseboards to give it some architectural interest.

Manon Floreat You did a beautiful job, Tracey. Love the naked windows!

vgunter You can run your cables through your attic and snake them down the wall. Most homes studs are on the 16. Find an outlet and measure 16" over to your right or left. This will give you a good idea where to run them down from the attic. Hope this helps.

Smilow + Mathiesen Did you ever find any art for your walls? If you are still looking, check out our website: www.pamelasmilow.com and if you like the style, we can talk about exact pieces and we promise to make the process easy for you to try possibilities. We don't stretch our work until it is sold so it can easily be shipped in a roll on approval. Be sure to look at the "Living with Art" section on the website--which shows our work in clients' homes... I would go for a long large horizontal above the couch and a square near the table. I also think you should consider a canvas over the couch and then a framed piece on paper (behind glass) for the smaller wall to vary the texture. As artists, we have built a business helping clients pick the right piece(s) for their space.
