Accessories. If you have had the same accessories peppered through your living room for years, maybe it’s time to see what else is out there. Visit your local antique shops or flea markets for unique steals that no one else will have. Or, choose a desired style, like modern, and peruse the appropriate store, such as a Crate & Barrel outlet.

Throw pillows. This is one of the more affordable cosmetic updates you can do for your living room. If your current throw pillows are worn or feeling a bit lackluster, consider what colors or patterns you might want to introduce into your space. With an idea in mind, look for reasonably priced options at shops like World Market or Target. With a new brood of pillows, your living room will take on an entirely new personality.

Ottomans. Once you introduce ottomans to your living room’s layout, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them. Ottomans are the perfect accessory to a seating arrangement: They take up little visual space when it’s just you and your family, yet they offer that extra seating when guests arrive for a party.

An accent chair. Feel like the space could use a pop of color or a hint of pizzazz? Try an accent chair. Think of a color that will really stand out against your current scheme, and try to scout something that falls in that shade. Again, don’t forget to look at the flea market! You could find an incredible piece at a bargain.

Upholstery. Perhaps you already have the perfect chairs or sofa, but they simply need an updated look. Consider re-upholstering them in something fresh and new, like a bright, fun print. These traditional armchairs take on a contemporary spin in this pink and white pattern.

Or go for a bold, solid color. This couch is so mesmerizing you almost don’t notice the dog laying claim to the ottoman!

Floor lamp. Have you checked out lamps lately? There are styles aplenty, way beyond your everyday table lamp. The right lighting in any room is extremely important; if you feels yours could use an upgrade, look for a new lamp or fixture that is as stylish as it is functional.

Rug. Rugs, if chosen correctly, can really carry a room. If you want something to ground your space in a contemporary fashion, choose a faux animal hide.

Or, if texture is what your space craves, go with a sheepskin rug.

Color. Perhaps you have a favorite color, and you’re dying to work it in. In that case, look for a variety of things: throw pillows, accessories or furniture. Try not to go too overboard; a room that feels too matched often feels less personal.
