Do you have wanderlust? Do you ever daydream of visiting exotic locales? Most of us would love to see the world, but traversing the globe isn't very realistic for many of us. Making our homes look like we are well travelled, however, IS within our reach.
Maps in home decor are extremely popular at the moment. They will add a fabulous design element to your house, and may even appease the world-traveller-that-lies-within without breaking the bank.
Here are some great ideas for incorporating maps into your decor.

To deliberately evoke the feel of a certain region, choose a map from that area. For example to create the feel of the Mediterranean, choose a map of Italy, France or Spain.

I have an antique school map (the kind with a map on both sides) from 1878 hanging in our family room. It is huge & we had to use plexi for the "glass" b/c real glass would have been too heavy for both sides of the map. It is fun to look at the old state lines (ie - there was just "Dakota", no North & South Dakota). The other side, with Europe, has changed as much as the US/Canada side.
One tip - if you have a map, keep a magnifying glass on a shelf nearby so you can see some of the details & read the small print.

Maps are intriguing. I have vintage globes in the library. I also have an old school pull-down map showing French explorers in the Great Lakes area and am deciding where to install it. I also scored a 60s vintage map of the Miami area intercoastal waterways at a garage sale for $2. I can't decide whether to frame it or use it to decoupage on a piece of furniture!

IKEA has a wonderful world map that is huge and the colors are great. For $150 it is a bargain!

In London we had friends who used Ordinance Survey maps all down their hall - it looked wonderful.
I have maps of significant areas for us on our upper kitchen cupboards (though I just took down the ones flanking the window, to get the current 'open shelves' look). I have our old place on an island in France, Arran where my people came from, County Durham where I was born, Prague and New South Wales!
I hope I never have to sell the house...

Great to see on a huge scale. I love the real thing too. Nothing give a room more definition (and pride) then a limit edition print on a historic level!

I am a map fanatic. A great way to score beautiful maps is to find an old oversized Atlas and cut out the maps to create a collage of them on a wall.

These are fantastic. I have maps throughout my office; on the wall, a globe, coasters, a clock, nice metal globe book ends and a matching set with a letter opener and a magnifying glass with maps etched into the handles.
