Beige But Not Boring

As the tabloids make millions of dollars from celebrity addictions, I make tens, sometimes even hundreds of smackers off my much less dangerous addiction, color. I use it any way I can whether it's a wallpapered ceiling, two or three accessories or a simple stripe on a pillow. A room without color makes me wanna stab myself in the knuckles with a dull, metal spork.
On Facebook, my uber stylist friend, Annette, once put me in my place after posting an update which spoke ill of the safest hue in the universe, beige. Her scolding remark "There is a place for every color" kinda sat with me for a few days after our little social media scuffle. The outcome? I don't necessarily despise beige when it's done in a less-expected, purposeful manner; however, I'm not gonna invite it into MY home just yet. My violet and charcoal spaces will probably sucker punch the B-word for trespassing too neutrally.
The following collection of images are, indeed, beige; however, they're not necessarily one-way-tickets to Snoreville or Boredomtown. Take a look, then leave many an opinionated comment below. I'm dying to see how others feel about beige...says the decorator dude with orange and white, chevron-painted floors.

Two of my least favorite hues in the entire galaxy are beige and yellow. Instead of banging my head against a brick wall to escape being blinded by the beige, I kinda liked the dull-ish duo together here. The happy yellow lets the sunshine in on an otherwise not-really-doing-much-to-earn-its-keep beige backdrop. I like this so much that I will consider it "beige-tastic".

Okay, now I kinda get Annette's point. There IS a place for beige and that is in texture. This room seems rather sparse; however, the textures, all beige, really make it warm and inviting. It's kinda like they're earning their keep here with a part-time job.

Okay, okay, okay, I get it. It's great when contrasted against something dramatic. Dear designer of this space, thank you for making me like black/beige color schemes. For realz.

Again, okay, okay, I see some good things happening here. The beige totally helps bounce the natural light around softly AND allows the small bursts of plum to stand out. Again, it's earning its keep here and I like it. I like it a lot.

| Yeah, so beige and cream wallcovering. I get it, I totally get it, and it's definitely introducing pattern here...safely. Safe isn't necessarily something that gets me going inspiration-wise BUT this room is super duper lovely and I think I would like to have tea in it and talk about politics. And by politics, I mean Kardashians and the entire 5th season of The Hills. Private Comment

Again, beige through texture. Definitely good. Like Batman and Robin or The Captain and Tenille, these two make beautiful, crime-fighting interior design music together.

I will call this "Big Money Beige". It works AMAZINGLY here since the other elements are surely high-end all the way. When working with high-end furnishings, frames, artwork and accessories, beige always seems to go beautifully. But what about when you're broke and consider "high-end" anything over $59.99? Hell if I know, my wood floors are painted orange and I use fabrics under $30 per yard.

Dear beige, while it's proven you do great things for certain spaces, I still prefer your cousin, greige. Notice how the muted grey tones of the wallcovering add a little more pizazz to the whole neutral thing? Well, I do. In fact, I notice it so much that I chose greige grasscloth for my own living room. As for what it's paired with, let's just say that Welch's Grape Soda would blend in quite nicely.

I think I am cured of my beige addiction - none of these rooms even tempted me! That's a first! Guess my days of tone on tone are over!

I've been slowly but surely eradicating builder beige from my home and turning it into a crayon box of color !

I'm with you, beige is boring, except just possibly with lots of texture, mounds of it, and mirrors maybe, and crystal, and tree stumps, etc. good try...

Beige makes me think of following a herd of cattle. Yes, every color has it's place, I agree, but I want to have some pops of BIG color. I need it. I long for it. I hate following the herd. Really.

Totally agree about "big money beige". I don't particularly like beige either, but I chose to paint my living ares (aka living and dining room) in it to soften the harsh sunlight (white looks too stark with it) and as a background for all the color (mainly jewel tones) that the furniture and accessories bring in.

Great examples! Love how gray adds sophistication to beige. I am a fan of taupe, especially when paired with soft creams or crisp white.

bahahaha.......you remind me so much of many of my best friends. Basically our "tastes" differ completely, but I love hanging around them! I love beige, taupes, greys, etc.........especially with texture. (not so much the orange and purples...)
The above was a compliment by the way!

My husband and I bought a spec house in 2007; every room painted beige with white trim. I attached one picture taken when we bought it, staged and before we had shelving installed in the big empty spaces by the fireplace. I thought the beige was so great at first, everything looks okay with beige. But in no time I realized I crave color. So one room at a time, we are painting them colors. I could enjoy time spent in some of some of the rooms above, but I couldn't live in them.

I love monochramatic rooms and the most beautiful house I've ever seen was all beige with just pops of color here and there. It possessed lots and lots of texture. I was going to copy this into my new home, but chickened out because I thought it would be too calming or too formal for our lifestyle. I love to admire it from afar in others homes. Thanks for all these beautiful photo's.

the examples you have chosen today, mr. awesome, are beyond boring.
i have a love of the neutrally neutrals but like to sex it up with brights in the form of flowers, books, pillows, lamps...etc..
i cannot get behind a room full of color for myself. i get angry. color makes me jacked up and i get the mads. my brain is always in full color mode in the figurative sense so i tend to like the calms around me. my husband is loud and annoying too and sometimes that is all the color i can take.
farts,
MFAMB

The commentary was so amusing that I almost forgot to look at the pictures.
I'm a 'gotta have color' person myself, but I can appreciate the rooms you've posted.
I've found over the last few years that I crave a cleaner palette (in the form of less THINGS), but still have the need for color. Nothing too drastic, just your basic red/gold/black french(ish) decor.
I have a friend who used to say "Give me your tired, your weak, your hungry........and I'll show you someone who lives in a beige house!" Don't get me wrong, I've seen many, many a beautiful beige home, even decorated a few for clients, but it's just not my personal preference.
Attached is a small snippet of my living room. See?- color. Color, color. color.

I too was a beige-aholic, (see my bedroom photos) and having tried every color under the sun in my bedroom, I've gone all out crazy and settled on BUTTERCREAM and MOCHA! I know, wild, right?! lol I just cant bring myself to add strong colors in there, as it is unsettling and totally gives an "un-zen" feeling. I'm getting some great ideas here though... Great post!

i love beige, but not beigy beige but more like a light beige with a hint of yellow or with a hint of taupe. These colors create great backdrop to a room and allows you to add color in the form of accessories. loved some of your pics.
