I like the low chairs/stools at the counter that almost disappear. The clean lines of the island show wonderfully.

Light walls cabinets paired with dark base cabinets are very now and making transitions between the two can be tricky. By going grey, the grout makes the transition a painless one and it relates directly to the light grey paint color on the wall.

If your kitchen is not quite wide enough for an island, rethink your counter. Just a little jut away from the walls — as in this kitchen — ups the available workspace by a lot.

Rethink the sink. Again, a corner's unused space is expertly tamed here.

Many tiles are suitable for damp areas. Here, striped tiles are laid parquet style, at 90 degrees, giving this kitchen runner a basket-weave effect.

This hybrid island has counter stool seating on both sides but an open shelf cabinet at one end. This allows the cook to use a bit of counterspace without having to move the stools.

This island has perpendicular seating on two sides rather than being across from one another. Not as table-like as some of the ones above, but a good solution if you don't want chairs in your prep area. The added details of the furniture style legs help make this island look more table-like.

Freestanding stainless steel work tables are great solutions to get a table and island in one. Because there's no storage underneath, your knees have a place to go when you pull up a stool. This work table could fit four more stools if needed, and certainly made the idea of a kitchen table

"We designed a custom kitchen island, which sits next to the kitchen window to help define the space between the kitchen and the living room," says Faiella. "This island doubles as additional counter space for cooking, and also works as a bistro-style table to eat at." This creative product is full of useful surprises — it's on wheels and has a flap, which helps to accommodate more guests.

Ladoro Display Cubes - $334.96 »
Simple and understated, this piece would look fantastic if used to separate a kitchen and living area in a studio apartment — not to mention, it adds a bit of extra storage space for some basic food supplies. I can see the basics (flours, sugars, rices, pastas) looking sharp in containers on those shelves.

If you think that your kitchen may be too narrow for an island, consider a long narrow table like this one.

ADD YOUR OWN BACKSPLASH PICTURE FRAME...
Consider readymade decorative tile features. In an English Tudor kitchen, a carved medallion is bordered by a round beaded liner, four coordinating corners and a simple molding. This olive set is from Sonoma Tilemakers. The earthy tone works well with the light mocha subway tile, cream cabinets, hammered copper hood and terracotta walls.

Mat your decorative feature. Much like framing a piece of art, add a coordinating mat inside the outer border to set off your design. The brown border in this feature makes the three diagonal squares stand out.

Shallower counter depths where there is simply not enough clearance behind the sink for the centerset faucet holes require a wall mounted faucet. It can be installed at any height you like.

Wall mounted faucets also work well in more traditional kitchens. It can be the perfect solution for an antique sink you do not want to mar with new hole drillings for a centerset faucet.
