Off the Wall: 9 Clever Ways to Ease Into Wallpaper
Not ready for a roomful of wallpaper? Try a little on a door, stairway or chest of drawers
I am a former magazine editor specializing in travel and design. I just completed my first remodel, turning my crumbling 1941 kitchen into a beauty of grays, whites and natural wood. If I could, I'd sleep on the countertop. That's how much I love it.

I realize there are still people who associate wallpaper with the Brady Bunch. But, the wallpaper revolution is in full swing, and the thousands of fresh, modern designs are showing up all over the place. Wallpaper is to the 21st century what the painted accent wall was to the '90s. But maybe you're a commitment-phobe. Or maybe you rent. Not to worry. You too can be on-trend. Here are nine ways to ease you into pattern, whimsy, and color. Relax, this won't hurt a bit.

If you're afraid of wallpaper paste, use a good double-stick tape. It's strong enough to hold up the individual panels. |
| I know art students shudder when told their masterpieces look like wallpaper. But you could do a lot worse. Large framed panels create a clean, symmetrical backdrop. And if you get tired of it, you can always switch patterns. Private Comment

| If you really want to make that secondhand dresser you bought look spiffy, go a step further than a coat of paint. Cover the drawers in wallpaper and, for heaven's sake, splurge on some nice pulls. Private Comment

| The good news is: you don't have to cut them out yourself. You can order a variety of animals in a variety of patterns. What child wouldn't want a wallpaper menagerie migrating through their bedroom? Private Comment

| Ok, so this was created with paint. But there is no reason you couldn't produce a similar effect with wallpaper. You'll just want to stick to an interior door. Private Comment

By papering only the chimney area the designer emphasizes the three-dimensionality of the room. It gives the whole room texture. And it removes any bit of Wild West that skull might have thought about bringing into the mix.

If my fantasy life can include a craft nook, it can also include a beautiful wallpapered craft nook. This helps demarcate a tiny space. Plus, it's just really pretty.

This Etsy lampshade was made from a map (and someone with a lot of time). You could easily recreate it with wallpaper scraps. "Easily" is a relative term here.

I like the wallpapered closet doors idea. Where is a good place online to find cool and modern patterns?

allmodern.com has lots of different modern designs from many different designers and companies. Anthropologie also has some really nice ones. wallpaperstore.com has thousands of designs and tends to be more traditional--but you'll have to wade through a ton of stuff. Good luck!

I am ready to make the wallpaper leap! I have found two papers I want to purchase but they are at http://www.wallpaperdirect.co.uk -- which is a UK company. I'd like to find the papers a little closer to home in the U.S. -- but I can't find the exact wallpaper anywhere else online. The brand is "Harlequin." Does anyone know of any resources for this brand? Or perhaps anyone have any experience/thoughts on using wallpaperdirect.co.uk?

RE: Wallpaper Direct. I, too, found paper I'd like to purchase from them. If you live in the USA you can't order it without contacting them to get the cost of shipping. You are advised to contact them via email and they will get back to you with a shipping quote. I've sent two emails with no response. I'm beginning to think they must have enough UK business they don't need to follow through on international orders. I wish I could find modern designs as great in the US, but I can't. I want black and true white...not beige, ivory, etc. There are very few black and true white patterns in the US and most of them are damask designs, not what I'm looking for.

All too often those stair risers are overlooked and that's a shame because they can make a statement and turn stairs into a focal point. Here are two more examples; the first is of faux mosaic tiles and the second is a woodland stream which progresses from under the water with rocks and fish to the overhead trees, birds and butterflies as you progress up the stairs.

StoryLady: BUMMER! I hate to hear they are not responding... and I agree, the "right" wallpapers are so hard to find. So many horrible choices out there :) and horrible search engines on many of the sites.

Another place to try is Ebay. It only works if you know the exact patterns you want, but I bought 7 rolls of amazing designer paper for about 75% off. Worth a try. Good luck!

I so LOVE the wallpapered staircase, fireplace and closet nook!!! My family used to run a wallpaper printing press in Chicago during the 1900s so wallpaper will always be in my blood, whether it's in fashion or not. :)

also- love the patchwork door and the wallpaper panels, as i absolutely love a flexible design where you can easily change the colour or pattern depending on the season or your mood!
i wonder how much wallppr is required to do this? would one roll be enough?
TIP: any leftover wallpaper you could use as gift wrapping paper. it's beautiful, (durable for big presents!) and much cheaper than the rubbish gift wrapping paper you find these days.

I'm on board with you Wallpaper Direct lovers. I have fallen for a few of their patterns, but can not find the same or any remotely the same here in the US. I am now considering stencils (either purchased or making my own) or just trying to be creative and hand drawing, then painting some sort of pattern or design on my walls. It would be a lot of work though.

for all those wallppr direct lovers... (for once im glad to be living in the UK where I could actually purchase it easily!)
have you considered contacting a 'wall art' company? They print almost any photo design or pattern onto readymade wallppr for you....
prob a bit expensive and timeconsuming if you're decorating a dresser, but if you want your fireplace feature wall, might just do the trick- and you can unleash your creative licence!

What wonderful ideas. I can't imagine the nightmare however of putting on a paneled door. I know I wouldn't have the patience for that application. I love the stair risers and love the framed prints too.

I believe the one above the fireplace was actually created with a stencil, not wallpaper.

Yes, Jenna you are correct, that is a stencil I designed and painted on the fireplace wall. But, it's not the first time people have assumed it is wallpaper...adore wallpaper and finally had it hung in a room in my house, on ONE wall. Janell

Samantha-fooled ya! The Woodland Stream is not paint but is meant to look like it has been painted by an artist. In fact, it is digitally printed from an original artist's rendering on to vinyl canvas-like wallcovering that is repositionable, removable and reusable so you can change it whenever you want.

"If you're afraid of wallpaper paste[...]"
It has nothing to do with fearing the paste. I fear what the paste brings into my home. Wallpaper paste (and contact paper paste is even worse) attracts ROACHES and is a breeding ground for their eggs. If you ever end up with a neighbor that has them, you'll end up with them, too, along with the horrendous expense of getting rid of them (which can occasionally prove nearly impossible).
I ALWAYS recommend against using wallpaper or, if they are determined, to use other means of sticking it up that do not include the pre-applied paste. I sincerely hope this "revolution" of wallpaper doesn't set off an epidemic of roach infestations that we then can't get rid of.....
