What to Get for Green-Thumb Types. It's a No-Gnome Zone.
Hi There! I currently live in a 1920s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia. I've been writing about design online for quite a few years over at Hatch: The Design Public Blog.

We've been searching high and low for the best gifts for gardeners. We've looked for traditional, for modern. For eco-friendly, for animal friendly. For stark white and very bright, and every color in between. Some of these finds will help gardeners kill time until the spring thaw, some will have them planning for planting season, and others are just objects that those who love plants will love to have around. The gifts range from serious heirloom seeds to wacky upside-down planters.
We'd love your great gift finds, too. Add a link to your best idea for the perfect gift for gardeners in the comments section and tell us why you love it.

my choice for a gift would be something slightly homemade. i went to a gardening workshop hosted by the sustainable food center recently, and the best thing was a chart of what vegetables to start in what months. so i'd include that chart (maybe reformatted, made pretty, and laminated) plus a seed packet for each month, simple starter clay pots, a bag of potting soil + compost :)

my mom's seriously into gardening, and my favorite present for her is some kind of thrifted pot/container. I've found vintage Red Wing crocks (like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Red-Wing-5-Gallon-Crock-4-Wing-Very-Nice-/230561624178?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35ae8b3072), old dynamite boxes...random stuff that doesn't scream "I'm from Home Depot." I grow and preserve more than half of what I eat. I make my compost etc. I love beautiful things as much as the next person. But if you spend $145.00 for a watering can the economy of the vegetable garden just went down the tube. But of course it's really not my place to judge how others want to spend their money.

psst, totally see your point. I would think of that Haws watering can as an HEIRLOOM :) I have my Grandpa Pop's bulb planter (rusty, works great and is super cute), clippers, trowel, watering can, weed rooter (yellow, says "Georgie's Green Thumb" on the side), even a roll of twine that has yet to rot and antique rake. I totally agree with you that no one should go into debt for gifts! These are just really fun to look at and dream about.
