Classic and cute, the typical cottage has been part of our design vernacular for years. As far back as medieval England and cemented in American design from coast to coast, a cottage signifies a cozy home. It is a smaller space, without pretense and boasting plenty of charm.
Walk inside a cottage and you expect to be met with a roaring fire, a cozy bed and perhaps a cup of soup. A cottage is quintessentially home, and it's design style and lifestyle deserve to be celebrated. Join me today as we take a look at the updated, modern cottage: a place you can put your feet up in and call home, without sacrificing the style you love.

Snuggle Up Next to Neighbors
Settled in closely to its neighbors, this modern cottage does everything right. From the classic stone fence to the darling bump-out chock-full of windows, this home is fantastically cottage. Don't miss the details in the fencing, plantings and those sweet little windows flanking the sunroom. This is modern cottage at its best.

Cottages often were set side by side and linked by breezeways for various family members. Grandma would stay in the smaller cottage, while the family with seven children took up residence in the "big house." While our families might not live so closely in this day and age, this connected cottage design continues to work well aesthetically and functionally. Separate spaces allow family members to spread out yet still be together.

| Stand Out With Cottage Detailing Curves and turrets say cottage, and the addition of a whimsical two-toned paint scheme make this one a modern delight. Simple, clean garden trimmings and edgings give it an updated feel from a traditional cottage. |
A simple cottage facade typically has some detailing on the roofline and a simple front porch. This updated version pays homage to a classic cottage without going over the top.

Pick the Perfect Color
White is a cottage interior favorite, from linens to cabinetry. Accent crisp whites with homey touches like wooden utensils and rambunctious plants for a cottage look. The glimmer of shining tiles here adds a glam update.

Combine Modern and Country Styling
Mixing modern appliances and classic cottage elements can be a hard sell. Work to keep both looks balanced, repeating similar shapes and lines to integrate the two styles seamlessly.

Jean Corey I would like to know more about the house in the third picture. It looks like a converted historic barn.

scarbowcow Me, too, Jean Corey. I clicked on the builder's name on the bottom of the picture and was able to see lots more pictures of the house. It seems to be in Pennsylvania. But there was no text explaining if it's a new building or a restoration (the firm seems to do both).

Jean Corey Thanks scarbowcow, that link does give a lot of good pictures, though it doesn't give any info on the house. It looks like it is pegged post and beam construction.

birdsandsoap Love the first one! I think my heart was made for cottage style architecture. and white! I love the bright, fresh feeling of white cabinetry. Makes those small, cozy rooms feel a little bigger.

christina The house in the 3rd picture is new construction: "Our first idea, which was favorably received, was to build a small farm compound." It does look like it could be a renovation, though. I like covered walkways and houses with courtyards, they have such charm.

messyann If you click on the photo of the "barn house", some info about its construction comes up on the right hand side of the page. It's lovely.
