20 of the Coziest Bedrooms on Houzz
Snuggle up to the most inviting sleeping spots around, in styles from cottage to contemporary
Houzz Contributor. Hi There! I currently live in a 1920s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia. I've been writing about design online for quite a few years over at Hatch: The Design Public Blog.

When the short days and the chill of winter are upon us, it's time to cozy up the bedroom. Soft rugs, table and wall lamps, throws, throw pillows, rustic touches, quilts, puffy down duvets, antiques, sloped ceilings, dormer windows, custom moldings, fireplaces and tight but comfortable proportions are snug and inviting touches in the coziest bedrooms on Houzz. I hope you'll glean inspiration for cozying up your own bedroom from these wonderful nests.

| Jolts of red in the toile bedding, quilt, plaid rug and lacquered door warm this comfortable bedroom. A stone fireplace, an overstuffed reading chair and a traditional farmhouse fourposter bed complete the cozy room. |
Ceilings play a big part in bedroom coziness. In this case the small loft space underneath the pitched roof transforms into a sweet sleeping space.

Of course, autumnal colors and warm, natural wood are not cozy necessities; scale, proportion, finishes and furniture layout create snuggley spaces. This cottage-chic bedroom has just enough room for the bed and nightstands. The exposed beams and puffy duvet create an inviting small bedroom.

Nestling a full-size bed into a corner always creates a feeling of coziness, though admittedly, it's not the most convenient layout for a couple. Overhead reading lamps add to the comfortable ambience.

A unique tradition in Newfoundland, Canada, is a bed in the kitchen. I've heard from several Newfoundlers that they remember fighting over who got the fun privilege of sleeping in the kitchen bed.

| Just because a bedroom is large or has a high ceiling, that doesn't mean it can't be cozy. A warm wood ceiling, a fieldstone fireplace and layers of soft textiles (drapes, rug, upholstery and bedding) make this room a comfortable nest. |

jannie Oh, these are places I'd feel at home - intimate spaces rather than cavernous. My own home is small with cozy bedrooms but none are as wonderfully appointed as these are. #1 is reminiscent of Dutch sleeping cupboards, which are probably more charming than comfortable. Count me among those who are in favor of scaling back the size of homes to create relatable spaces.

lisalovesquilts In the not too distant past here in Scotland there used to be (possibly still are) what was called the "set in bed" which sounds like the aforementioned Dutch sleeping cupboards. Often a space big enough for a double bed able to curtained off for privacy but in the living room so that the fireplace could keep both areas warm. I recall being told how wonderfully cozy these were. I love the top bed in particular, my children all like the built in bunk room beds, I think they like the idea of being snug, a bit like a cat in a shoe box!

summilux lisalovesquilts- here in the states what you were referring to as being done in the not too distant past we just did to our upstairs area. We wanted an additional sleeping area and this was our solution. BTW- my mom made the quilt for us.

Fine Art & Portraits by Laurel Lots of beautiful ideas. I was loving those bunkbeds, until docilana reminded me how difficult it would be to change the sheets. Loved the raised fireplace at the same level as the bed. The previous one, way down on the floor, with a high bed, makes no sense. Thanks for a beautiful article.

hillonthehouse Becky, you scored again. I love these! They appeal to both sides of my decorating personality - the cozy wood-lined nooks (like my cabin in the mountains), and the white attic-like dormered spaces (as in my 20's Cape in town). As much as I love these built-in beds, though, they are a bear to change the sheets on. Oh well, sometimes coziness demands a little sacrifice.

Sharon McLeod I like to have my bed at an angle out of a corner - but I don't see people doing that too often. I find the room actually looks bigger! And talk about easy to make the bed!! :)

judithesl The kitchen bench/bed has a long history in Sweden as well. It probably dates back to the Vikings when everyone slept in the great hall by the fire, except the master and mistress of the house who had a cupboard bed against one wall.
