Chinese Fretwork in Design
Play With Geometric Cutwork for Layers of Pattern and Character
Fretwork is an interlaced decorative design, most often featuring geometric patterns. This design element is often created by ornamental woodwork cut to represent small interlacing pattern or trellis work. With an oriental influence, it is often seen as a decorative element in Chippendale furnishings. Used in the right amount, this design element can add a layer of global character to a room design.

Fretwork also is the inspiration for patterns seen on many wallpapers and fabrics. Here a fretwork mirror hung over wallpaper featuring a fretwork trellis pattern creates an intriguing combination.

I have an antique red and gold one that I might be willing to sell. It is Calif. bearing in mind the shipping costs. I also know of another wood finished one that is available. Joanne

Thank you for the inquiry. Though we don't like to giveaway all of our sources, the day bed comes from a store in Hawaii called Fischake. We had the bed custom lacquered using automotive paint. More info on the project can be found here: http://www.philpotts.net/news/view/30

I gave my faux painter a 6"x4" printout of a Chinese fretwork screen, and she made a stencil for a powder room. We had wanted to use grasscloth, but the corner turns were bullnosed, and the trim was recesses (so nothing to abutt the paper against.) I think this turned out fun in spite of that challenge!
