One of the many things I enjoy about my job is educating clients about interior design and expanding their design vocabularies. During a casual chat with a client I recommended that she purchase a settee for the sitting area in her master bedroom. Her response was, "A settee? What is that?"
I often take it for granted that everyone has the same knowledge of furniture as I do. Taking the time to educate my clients and friends about design is like talking to them about a good friend. So, back to the question at hand; what is a settee? Simply put, a settee is a small sofa that can accommodate two people. Next question: "Well, isn't that a loveseat?" My answer: Similar, like a loveseat's slimmer cousin. Let me show you a what I mean.

Pull your settee up to a desk to create an intimate workspace for two or to simply have more breathing room while you work solo.

One of my favorite uses of a settee has to be in a dining space. I love the inspiration behind a conventional booth transformed to function in a residential breakfast nook.

Flaunting a tufted back and nailhead trim, this settee is a stunning piece for those with refined taste. The zebra hide rug and shell-encrusted mirror add a wonderful eclecticism to the vignette.

Pictures one and five are probably my favorites in this ideabook. A settee always reminds me of a 'lady'. A good post Erika. Thank you.

beautiful settees - I'm wondering what it would be called if the settee has no back -just arms. It's not a chaise right? - would it be called a bench?

I love the settee in front of the bed that is covered it toile. Oh so pretty. Now in my foyer I have what I call a bench. Is it a bench or a settee? I guess I think of settee's in bedrooms or living rooms, but the foyer it would be a bench. I know, I'm nuts. LOL

I have wanted a settee for my kitchen for years. Can you offer a great source? They are not readily available. I especially love style of the grey one with the white base!

Settees are perfect for small, cottage spaces. I use one in a corner of my living room that I've carved out for a "work" space. Unfortunately, I realize this photo doesn't show the settee completely, nor represent it's true glory. Ah well....
