Very few patterns are as diverse as the stripe. Thick, thin, vertical, horizontal...stripes can assume many different incarnations. They can be sophisticated, whimsical, juvenile or adult. They can be subtle or bold. They can be merely a backdrop or they can be "the" statement in a room. And adding stripes to a wall is as easy as weilding a paintbrush. As a designer, I've used various patterns of striping in many kinds of rooms. It can be playful or sophisticated. Stripes can widen a room or give it the feeling of a taller ceiling. Stripes are not difficult to do. The time, as with all painting comes with the preparation. When you tape off, use a level. You want to be sure all the lines are straight. Lastly, stripes can give a room so much interest.
