Reflect your personality. "We like to use wall art as well as sculptures to reflect the personality and interests of our clients. It's another layer that reflects who they are and how they live," says Michael Fullen of Michael Fullen Design Group. In this case, the homeowners are avid travelers and take regular vacations to Fiji and Hawaii."

This piece "is a giant palm frond mounted on an iron stand," Fullen says. "It's a simple piece of nature that takes on an entirely different appearance when used in such a new way."

This vase, if placed directly on the floor, wouldn't have quite enough height to do the branches justice. Set atop a small pile of books, the vignette successfully plays to scale.

7. Roll in a bar cart. Expand serving and storage space without spending major cash. Bar carts are the ultimate multitaskers — they morph from party buffet to cocktail station to decorative display without breaking a sweat.

Vintage coastal style is all about taking found items and turning them into something else. What a great idea for a headboard! Look for pieces of old pallets washed up on the shore or a single piece of driftwood you could use for a shelf. When you're fed up with it, turn it into something else.
traditional kitchen by Molly Frey Design
A big part of the vintage coastal look is about making things look like they've been there forever. Using architectural moldings and paneling, such as tongue and groove, board and batten or just wide boards, you can create interesting features in an otherwise characterless room.

Tip: Fix 2-by-4 foot lengths of timber to your ceiling at intervals. To make them look aged, I like to have the edges chamfered, or you can fix a rounded bead molding (available at many hardwood or craft stores) to the edges. Line the remaining ceiling with tongue and groove or wide boards. Paint all of it, including the walls, in soft whites.

A long, tubular vase filled with stones and water is perfect for an orchid stem. The centerpiece is created by simply repeating the look with a trio of vases.

Araya and Jordan cleaned and painted every surface in the home and created a starting point of mostly neutrals. The designer challenged herself by staying within a workable budget (she was unexpectedly laid off from her job when they began remodeling the home).

The couple made the large map hangings by gluing a map mural onto plywood with two-part epoxy.

Much of the decor and many of the accessories in the house have special meaning and are either heirloom pieces or handmade by the couple.

A vintage military trunk passed down to Araya by her grandfather makes the perfect pairing with a green striped woven planter that she made and sells in her online shop, Wind and Willow Home. She also upcycled a coffee tabletop from a Home Goods purchase almost a decade ago.

"It feels great knowing that we loved this place back to life. My husband did most of the handiwork, painting and refinishing, and the house truly reflects our style," she says. "Every space has a purpose, and nothing is displayed just for show."

Mix it up with many types of wood. Blending wood types and finishes in one room is a fun, creative look. Mix up your dining chairs or choose different finishes for your living room furniture — and if something doesn't work, paint it. Of course, you can tap into this look instantly by scooping up a beautiful piece of furniture (like the custom sideboard shown here) that does the mixing for you.
This would be a fun way to learn carpentry. Making single, double or triple drawer units and stacking them to make a storage wall.

Forage for your own furniture. If your property is wooded, you may be able to find your next coffee table right out your back door. No acreage? Keep an eye out for trees being removed in your neighborhood and ask the tree service folks (or your neighbor) if they would be willing to part with a section — if it was destined for wood chips, they might not mind sharing. You'll want to throughly clean any wood that has been outside and look for evidence of bugs before bringing it inside.

Make a woodsy staircase with your leftover wallpaper. That same gorgeous Cole & Son paper (shown here in a different colorway) turns a plain staircase into a focal point in this home. Apply wallpaper to the risers and paint the steps in a matching shade for a seamless look.

This is a very clever design. At first glance you can be forgiven for wondering how on earth you're going to get books stacked on here, but once you start putting them on, they fit very well between the spaces provided. It's a bit like a giant bookcase puzzle!
