Building a Fairytale Cottage is Easy at Houzz
It seems the older I get, the more I find myself dreaming of one day living in a fairytale cottage. Could it have been all those fairytales I heard growing up? Did I see a few too many Disney movies over the years? Or, could it just be the hectic pace of everyday life that has me fantasizing about life in a storybook house.
This evening I decided to build my virtual fairytale cottage, pulling inspiration from all the enchanting homes here at Houzz. I wondered if I would find all the elements I needed to create my storybook house? That question was soon answered as I realized I’m not the only one with dreams of a storybook home.
Our pumpkin carriage awaits! Take the hand of our mouse doorman and step right up. Hold on tight, it's going to be a whimsical ride! :-)

| Let's start with the neighborhood...this one will do nicely. Looks like a fairytale setting to me. The cathedral reminds me of a castle in the countryside. Private Comment

Our storybook home should definitely be nestled down in a beautiful, wooded village. Of course, it would have a tower room, complete with turret.

Our fairytale home would be surrounded by a beautiful stone wall with a gate depicting an enchanted forest.

As you entered through the enchanted forest gate, you would be greeted by Mr. Frog. He will try his best to convince you that a kiss will turn him back into the prince he once was. Beware of the frog. ;-)

Our fairytale home will be well protected by a moat filled with man-eating crocodiles. If crocodiles aren't available, goldfish will do. Do you think there's a troll living under the drawbridge? ;-)

If you made it across the moat, you might find a cottage with whimsically designed shutters and window boxes filled to overflowing.

The front door to our storybook house would most certainly be arched...and the most beautiful shade of passionate purple.

| Be careful as you walk around our fairytale cottage. The planters have been known to come to life! Private Comment

| Where will we park the pumpkin carriage? I think I know just the spot. Private Comment

There would be a secret garden surrounding our storybook house. You will have to know the secret password to get past the guard. Rumor has it he can be bribed with tuna. ;-)

| Once in the garden, you'll find beautiful spires of lavender Foxglove, also known as Fairy Caps, Fairy Thimbles and Fairy Gloves. Private Comment

| Every fairytale cottage needs a fairytale guest house. This one is so lovely both inside and out, the guest will be spellbound and will not want to leave. Private Comment

Susan-My sister and I were just talking about the Hugh Comstock fairy tale cottages last week, how we would love to live in Carmel. Even the shops are like fairy tale cottages. I have not seen much published about how the insides are decorated, but I would love to peek inside. I guess many of us dream about a fairy tale life, in a fairy tale cottage with a secret fairy tale garden. Great Idea book.

I love this!
I've been planning a fairytale cottage for a few years now, collecting photos and 1920s-1940s house plans. We already own the land, a forested 5 acres with a small hill right in the middle, the perfect spot! We're not going to build until our son goes off to college in 8 years, so I will have every detail perfected by the time we break ground. :)
And like Adele said, I am certainly influenced by the Comstock cottages in Carmel. (NorCal represent!) Adele, I've found some interior photos but they're on another computer. I'll try to remember to post them later today for you!
