1. Add warm wood accents. Wood slats give this minimalist room a relaxing Asian feel.
by NB Design Group, Inc
2. Reflect nature with materials. Natural textures like wood and stone breathe life into a bathroom. A pebbled tile floor feels amazing underfoot.

If a new floor is not in your budget anytime soon, treat yourself to a pebble bath mat.
by Rockefeller Partners Architects
3. Float the vanity. These vanities let the flooring extend all the way to the wall and give the room a more open feeling.
by Cabinets and Beyond Design Studio
4. Open up the vanity. As long as you're using it only for storing items that can look neat, like towels or products corralled in baskets, an open vanity makes things look bigger.
by ZAK Architecture
5. Use crisp white. Nothing says "relaxing spa" like light and bright walls and ceilings.

Tip: Rolled-up towels the way you see here is quintessential spa.
by Betty Wasserman
6. Create continuity with tile. Continuous light-colored tile from floor to ceiling makes the room look bigger.
by Turn Collaborative
7. Use clear glass. Another component that creates continuity is transparency. It makes the bath look much larger and keeps a shower stall from visually chopping up the bathroom layout.
by Solomon+Bauer+Giambastiani Architects
8. Sink the tub. Stepping down into a bath recalls stepping down into a whirlpool after a spa massage.
by Concreteworks
9. Add a fireplace. This model is two sided and thus can be enjoyed from two rooms.
by A Collaborative Design Group
10. Choose a stylish toilet. "Stylish toilet" is no longer an oxymoron. Hatbox styles, wall-mounted versions and notorious Japanese models that do a lot more than flush are just some of the many options on the market.

Meet the New Super Toilets
by Logue Studio Design Inc.
11. Open up the view. Obviously, this is a very dramatic example, but even a small window in your shower stall or next to the tub will let you relax and look outdoors while rinsing or soaking.
Modern Bathroom
12. Let natural light in. If your bathroom's location means opening up the view would turn you into an exhibitionist, choose glass that lets in the light but disappoints the peeping Toms.
by Abueg Morris Architect
13. Choose a vessel sink. This is a good opportunity to add a natural texture like stone. If you're trying to keep things clean and open, opt for clear glass.
by Amelie de Gaulle Interiors
14. Get particular about tidiness. Neatness counts. If you walked into a spa full of sloppily folded towels placed willy-nilly, it might bug you so much that it would keep you from relaxing during your massage. Apply the same rules to your bath: Keep products tucked away in drawers or cabinets, and neatly fold or roll your towels in an orderly fashion. I recommend fluffy white towels, but if that isn't realistic for you, buy towels that are all the same color. Donate your raggedy old towels to an animal shelter.
by Sutton Suzuki Architects
15. Give your head a rest. This tub headrest is much better than rolling up a towel underneath your head.
by Studio One-Off Architecture & Design
16. Keep a fluffy white robe close at hand. Think about logistics when choosing a spot for robe hooks and towel bars. If you want to go for a full spa outfit, treat yourself to some spa shoes.
by Anna Gauck
17. Add an orchid. You can pick up these beautiful exotic blossoms at the grocery store for about nine bucks, and they'll last for months.
by John Senhauser Architects
18. Light some candles. No matter how small your bathroom, you can always give your tub a more relaxed feel with the glow of candlelight. Playing an Enya album is optional.
by Belzberg Architects

nbjorklund Great advice! Bathroom remodels are great for adding value to your home and I really enjoyed all the unique design concepts. I think anyone would love to have one of these bathrooms! http://www.rickbeckrealestate.com/

Realstone Systems how about adding some raw natural texture with stone veneer? Looks beautiful and could be an excellent back exfoliator :)

Harris Welker Architects Oh darn, the only things we didn't think to add to our Guest Bathroom Remodel is the orchid and spa robe! Nice article. Thanks!

sdprotas Love the spa look! Recently redid a small white bathroom using mixed natural color pebble floors, natural zebra wood hanging vanity with a square shallow sink and glass corner shower to allow for more "space" to move around.

Pegasus Lighting I'd also suggest adding a dimmer switch to the lights for a "spa-ed up bathroom." Often people don't even think about putting them in the bathroom, but they can really help change the whole atmosphere to something much more relaxing. Bright lights are important when you're rushing to get ready in the morning, and keeping everything clean, but for evening soaks in the tub, you need a little ambiance!

traceyg Hi Becky ~I always enjoy your posts!
I agree ... White fluffy towels = spa.
I'm in search of just those towels ... any suggestions?
Does anyone out there have any favorite fluffy, white, "thirsty" towels to bring that spa feeling home?
THANK YOU! traceyg

Casart Coverings Ditto Charmean's comments and especially so for #11-Open up the view. That bathroom has it all-view, fireplace, opulence personified! If it was my bathroom, I'd soak and gaze all day and never get anything done. Remember when you were little and played in the tub so long your skin was all shriveled when your mother finally made you get out? At my age that would be something I don't need any more of, so will be content to just gaze and admire from afar.

KITCHENS BY DESIGN Hi Becky, love your update on relaxing spa bathrooms. So many choices to show my clients. I would like to add a note about fireplaces in the bathroom. A client. Shared with me an online search he did for wall mounted electric fireplaces. These are a perfect solution where heat is needed as well as offering a great look and some light as well. Typically these are electric and plug into a standard outlet. They come in a wide variety of styles and sizes. I'm on the hunt for the perfect contemporary on right now.

gillianne Aaaaaaahhhhh...... A spa sensation was my goal for our remodel of a narrow galley bathroom. We went with 12" square gray-green local slate for floor and tub surround and weathered silvery 4x4" cedar posts salvaged from an old fence to support a dark granite vanity top and Mexican hammered copper vessel sink. Then we mixed sleek brushed nickel and more traditional oil-rubbed bronze fixtures. Walls and extra-long shower curtains are white. A few colorful porcelain and cloisonne plates on the walls relieve the austerity. It was a budget-friendly make-over that met my goal. But now I think I need an orchid. :) Thanks for this piece, Becky--in fact, for all your Houzz contributions.
