If we don't need an extractor fan coming down from the ceiling, I like the idea of having two drop ceiling lights as in this picture which could mirror the ones in the dining room.

These backsplash tiles look great. However, I don't want them to go too far above the counter top. The rest of the wall will be painted white with one or two splashs of a very deep rich blue colour, particularly around the bookshelf area.
I also like the idea of some wall shelves as in this picture, either in wood or metal along the wall where there are no long units (oven, fridge etc).

We definitely want to put in one of these pull out spice racks in the island on the same side as the cooking hob. (not in wood but in the same white as the cabinetry.
