Tile wainscoting is perfect for bathrooms because of the tight seam created.

Carrara marble subway tiles are an upscale alternative to ceramic.
by Leslie Saul & Associates
The horizontal lines of this subway tile wainscoting and the vertical lines of the board and batten walls create a visually striking bathroom.

Pratt & Larson tile wainscoting acts as a backsplash for the pedestal sink in this extensively remodeled bathroom, part of an early 1900’s Tudor-style house.

Arctic white subway tile by Daltile with silver grout by Mapei re-creates the original charm of this Philadelphia bathroom.
by Whitefield & Co, LLC
Subway tile wainscoting is a decorative alternative to monochromatic walls. In this historic Haddon Heights, New Jersey, bathroom, white ceramic subway tile wainscoting and Rugged Suede painted walls starkly contrast each other.

Using tile wainscoting as opposed to beadboard in the bathroom is a great way to complement the tile lining the shower.

krissyb92603 This is a must-have in my house with three young boys sharing a bathroom! LOL

Lanie Brown I wish I'd known enough about design to select subway tile when my husband & I renovated our master bath. If we ever blow the money to replace the travertine, this is the more classic choice for our home.

astraea Maybe because I actually commuted on a big city subway for years, I can't idealize it now, or warm up to using it at home. I remember it being perpetually dirty, and strictly utilitarian. And where it's used in public bathrooms .. like at the park or beach, they're also rarely clean or fresh-smelling. That's not a good vision to recommend "subway tiles" for home use!

llarmon I despise subway tile! It's called subway tile for a reason and who wants to live with something that looks like a subway?

Baths of Distinction Inc. I like the way a small splash of color can make such a big difference. Very classic looking bathrooms.

lizziek Use epoxy grout which is a bit more expensive but will save you from cleaning all that light colored grout. I've used it for every remodel and will use it exclusively for all the tile in my new home. They also have an epoxy sealer which comes in lots of colors which you paint on. It freshened up the existing grout in my mud room and made it look almost like a new tile job.

pentalpha The Carrera marble looks lovely but being from a city with subways with dirty white subway tile everywhere (and OMG don't go in the washrooms!), I just can't put it up in my home. And too bad too cause some installations done with a light hand really do look nice. But I know I'd just end up ripping it out. Sigh.

Baths of Distinction Inc. While I've seen some bathrooms with it about 2/3 up the wall, about one third the height of your wall is a general rule of thumb.

no1stfan I do not recommend white tile in any bathroom. My updated white tiled bathroom looked beautiful when we finished. However, the floor is impossible to keep clean, the white floor magnifies any spec of dirt. I have to sweep daily. The grout was also light. It looked awful within a few months even with weekly scrubbing. I painted the grout with grout paint until we can redo the tile. The darker grout looks cleaner. Please do not fall for current styles like I have.

Pine Street Carpenters & The Kitchen Studio Great article, Rachel. Here are some of our own baths that utilize subway tile wainscoting.

ankelly301 To each their own but not my style, looks too much like a public restroom and not the good kind. I am considering doing a lower and upper paint, white on bottom and possibly light green or yellow on top.
