Add the Zest of an Orange (Here Are Ten Ways)

Hi There! I currently live in a 1920s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected." I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia. I've been writing about design online for quite a few years over at Hatch: The Design Public Blog.

Sometimes Kit Pollard and I are thinking about the same things at the same time! As she was thinking "warm and orange" today, I was thinking about how to use orange in your home.

Orange is one of my favorite colors, but it can be tough to use in design sometimes. Too much orange can be overwhelming. While it's smashing combined with colors like avocado green, light blue, charcoal gray, chocolate brown, red and yellow, and many more, sometimes throwing orange into the wrong mix can be a total disaster. Here are some examples for avoiding disaster when adding some fabulous orange.

1) Use orange as a large accent. Here the planter wall enlivens the gray alleyway space.

2) Think about making a statement with high gloss orange. Everything else takes a backseat to the orange in this kitchen.

3) Make a strong statement with just a small pop of orange. This lamp really stands out because of its color.

4) If you have one piece that is upholstered in orange, consider picking it up somewhere else in the space, like this designer did with the throw pillow. A vase or painting are other good opportunities to do this.

5) Use orange for a clever paint job. The orange trim on this vintage piece adds a graphic punch.

6) Add orange desk chairs to a neutral workspace palette.

7) Take a classic and paint it orange. These chairs are most often shown in the plain aluminum. Here they are a real standout.

8) If you are looking to add some color to a neutral bedroom, consider adding orange accents. The chair and artwork here have the same visual effect of an Hermes throw.

9) Take the orange outside. The orange wall defines the patio space, marking a boundary in this area that navigates between indoors and outdoors.

10) If you really really really love orange, go for it and add a large orange accent wall. Here it is broken up by artwork and the fireplace, so the powerful hue doesn't overwhelm the room.

Love both of your ideabooks! Several of the photos were already in my ideabooks, but you called my attention to several I hadn't found before. I can't live without a little orange in my house, especially during the long, grey winters we get here in the Pacific Northwest where I live. We get plenty of naturally-occurring green and grey because of our climate, and by the end of January each year, my eyes positively crave blue and orange (also yellow and a little red), so I've tried to use those colors in my decor to help me get through the winters.

PERFECT! about a year ago I got crazy with orange in our family room - started with an accent wall and kept going. Since then I've been at a loss as to HOW to tie it into our kitchen...Shazam! I'm so buying an orange blender and I'll accent the barstools and done! I've been re-inspired. Thanks!

Love orange! Thanks for doing a post on this color. I chose this color for my room as a teenager and have loved it ever since. It can truly transform a room. We've posted an orange faux linen on Casart coverings' Houzz but here it is again. Since this is self-adhesive, removable and reusable wallpaper, it can be used seasonally like slipcovers for your walls.

Yes, my client really, really, really loves orange -- and so do I. In fact, I've had a number of clients hire me because they see my clients' homes with orange in them and they want it too. I'm going to have to find another client who loves some other color so I don't have people thinking it's the only color I use :0) -- here are a couple other photos of projects with orange. I love it in this contemporary and industrial style space. It looks great against all the gray concrete. In the empty room (a current project) the orange makes the architecture of the kitchen really stand out. Oh - and I am in Portland, Oregon so it definitely is a way to brighten up our gray days.

Love it! I just looked at the other ideabook with warm and orange. I posted a photo of my little 2 yr old girl's newly decorated "big girl" room. Had to go with orange!

I agree with orange being an awesome color for interiors. Unfortunately I find many of my clients a bit fearful of using it - it's obviously a strong color but used judiciously it will always enhance the space. I've included two images my firm did for a loft space in downtown Boston because I think our discriminant use of orange really brings some nice warmth and drama to an otherwise austere building.

Loved the white-orange combo. I read in a comment in Houzz that is "Retrofit 60´s ultramodern"... e.g. http://www.maff.nl/fotos ... LOL... I am not sure if know what it means but I like it!!
