The new end tables for fall 2012 clearly point in two opposite directions. On the one side, look for sturdy, wide tables in simple cylindrical forms: hourglass, barbell or stocky pillar. On the other, watch for legs so fine, skinny and dainty that you'd swear the tabletops might float away. Finishes are doing the same opposing act, either leaning toward bright, golden metallics or going the opposite way in flat, monochromatic black and white. Compare and contrast these fat and skinny tables to decide which trend you'll follow.

Skinny: Sweet curving legs add grace and air to an otherwise straight-up pedestal table. Its delicate form would balance nicely with more traditional furnishings.

Sturdy: This hand-carved table can double as seating. A pair in front of a plush sofa would be a great counterbalance and perfect for a glass of wine.

Skinny: With a silhouette like a martini glass, a gold table like this deserves the spotlight. Perch it near your most decadent plush armchair and drink that martini dry.

Sturdy: Such beautiful curves on this table — it would be elegant sitting by a tufted upholstered headboard. Pile it with a stack of books for added class.

| Skinny: Something about the little legs on this table makes me think of tea and crumpets on a Saturday morning. It has a timeless elegance that will fit in almost any space. |

Sturdy: Though this table has a metallic tone, its wide base and modern form keep it from feeling too precious. It's a welcome addition to the most modern of spaces.

Sturdy: Hand-welded steel adds to the sculptural, artistic vibe of this mini monolith. It will easily provide added gravitas to an important room.

Skinny: Three mini tripod legs push this pedestal up off the floor. The simple lines won't distract in a complicated room design.

kymberlychats The carved wood table looks like a bruised arm in the intro photo (close view of middle section). Then from a distance, looks like a yarn spool....

astraea When I first moved out on my own, it was to a large condo. My dream was to have travertine coffee & end tables, but you could only find them in decorator showrooms at the time .. and very expensive .. maybe $2,500 for a coffee table. I'm so glad I couldn't afford them, because the weight also makes them very impractical! I like my wooden coffee & end table, because they provide additional storage space. And I still like them 31 years since I bought them!

morgana44 I have my Mom's coffee table and end tables in my living room. She bought them in the 30's. They are walnut and the end tables have long tapered legs and one drawer. The coffee table has an X base. They are timeless and my daughter's are fighting over who will get them.
