The basics: Plastic laminate countertops consist of a wafer-thin finish adhered to a plywood or particleboard substrate. That thin finish is a high-pressure laminate (HPL); it's made of three layers of material bonded together by high heat and pressure: a clear melamine top for protection, a decorative layer and a backing made of phenolic resin-coated kraft paper. Well-known laminate manufacturers include Formica, Wilsonart and Nevamar.

Costs: $8 to $20 per square foot, including installation.
by Formica Group
Special considerations: Because laminates are so thin, edge details require forethought to avoid that telltale brown line at the counter's edge. Options include:
  • Profiled edge: Laminates have advanced to now have beveled, ogee and bullnose edge profiles, which vary by manufacturer.
  • Edge band: These thick and dense veneers are adhered to the cabinet edge and are made for abuse. Choose ABS plastic edge bands over PVC whenever possible, as ABS is recyclable and chlorine free.
  • Metal edge: Go retro with this detail that harks back to the 1950s; a metal edge is fastened to the edge of the counter. Neatniks might think twice about this crumb-catching detail.
  • Exposed plywood: As shown in this photo, some modern designs showcase the thin laminate veneer and adhere it to premium plywood, leaving the thin veneer edge and plies exposed.

Advantages: Low cost and a myriad of choices are the boon here. Laminates come in a staggering array of colors, patterns and finishes: from eggplant to amber, maple to marble and high gloss to grained.

Disadvantages: Keep your cutting boards handy, as knives can wreak havoc on the melamine finish. And trivets should be used with hot pans, as the lamination is heat resistant to just 150 degrees.
by Formica Group
Maintenance: As with most counters, stick with a damp cloth or sponge and mild detergent for routine cleaning. Avoid bleach, as it can cause discoloration. Long-term care is a breeze, as the top coat of protection is permanent and requires no sealing.

Sustainability: Plastic laminate veneers get a green thumbs-up for the modest amount of resources consumed during manufacturing (though they're roughly a quarter petroleum-based resins). Manufacturers like Formica and Wilsonart have boosted the sustainability of their products with the use of FSC-certified wood. And several manufacturers can boast of GreenGuard certification, which indicates that their products contribute to improved indoor air quality.

catdeco I recently replaced my 25 year old boring beige formica with new Wilsonart ones. I really like them and they only cost me a third of what granite would have cost me. And they are pretty practical, my boring beige ones were replaced because I was tired of them, not because they were damaged or worn.. But at this pricepoint, even if I get bored or unhappy with these, I can replaced them again! Don't get me wrong, if you really want granite or something else go for it! But I am very happy with my countertops. They really gave my kitchen a lift and I have gotten a lot of compliments.

olldbobbi I remember about a million years ago my mother put a hot-off-the-stove pot of mashed potatoes on her laminate counter top, and when the surface laminate "burst" it sent mashed potatoes flying all over the kitchen. Seriously, no joke!

I don't think there's anything wrong with going with laminate countertops, they come in such a variety these days and some are quite beautiful. Wilsonart has a 3-D laminate, no? I remember thinking how nice it looked.

midmodfan We originally wanted white quartz countertops but weren't sure about all the white in the kitchen. So we chose white high gloss laminate with a brushed aluminium edge. I'm very happy with the material, it looks good and is easy maintenance. And I'm glad we went with relatively cheap laminate because white counters proved to be "too much". We'll eventually replace them - but, like catdeco said, without regret.

Oh, and I personally like laminates that don't try to look like something else. ;-)

Mercer Home Solutions Usually I don't like the cheap look of laminates but there are some great things you can do with them to make them look great. These are some excellent examples.

maxima The best cleaner for laminate counters is Soft Scrub. It may even get out an old stain. I personally prefer the non-bleach. The new laminates today are pretty nice and definitely more affordable, especially when you get tired of them after 10 years.

cvsharkey Has anyone tried soapstone? I just got their samples--it is higher maintenance, but it's lovely stuff. I'm still reseaching other's comments on it.

Melinda Haverland I would love details on the last picture of countertops !! Thanks !!

bkdale I replaced my counters with Formica Basalt Slate. The counters look fantastic. Friends state the Formica looks as good as the real deal. Very affordable. Care is used with the aid of trivets and windex. Granit/stone etc, is over done and expensive. It will last a life time but, how lone is one's life time, how long will one live in the same house, and how long will you not tire of the look. For those thinking of Formica, give a good look at the new samples. I have no regret purchasing Basalt Slate.

Wayne Lee I would like to give a good shout out for Post formed Plam with a Sanitary cove at the integral backsplash. They can make the curve tight, but not too tight to easily wash and wipe.

Linda Butler Thank you! I have thought for a while now that granite is so overdone it has become trite, and I can't afford it anyway. My little suburban house is not pricey enough to justify high end materials, but I still want to have a nice home. There are some very nice laminates in this article and I can't wait to replace my worn out "butcher block" laminate.

7921 I have a question; was told that under-mount sink is not possible with laminate counters. I think I have seen 2 of them in this display. The last by Formica Group. what am I looking at?

stlouisgaltoo We just finished our kitchen remodel over the summer. I grew up with laminates and had one installed this time too. As someone mentioned, granite did not make any financial sense for the price point in which my house falls. I frankly don't even dream about it. I love the color and pattern that i had installed. I get lots of oooohs and aaaahs too. Its a kitchen. To spend 3 times the price of laminate for a solid surface countertop was out of my price point. I am practical and very happy with my choice.

tyleravenue I have an undermount sink with my new Wilsonart Laminate counter tops. Its a relatively new product that I was willing to take a chance on and I love it.

grandma42 After 22 years I scorched a hole in my "formica" top other than that the top was well over 39 years old and only a bit dated. It is a good material for a counter top. I just wonder how landfills will handle granite and other materials when people tire of color, look, or maintenance.

stlouisgaltoo Maybe they will repurpose the granite, crush it and make a new sold surfce from it?

Formica Group We love all of this laminate love and have enjoyed following this thread. We saw a few questions and thought we’d jump in …

@Melinda Haverland – That last image is of our Dolce Vita 180fx®. Here’s a link to an entire album of images if you’d like to see more: http://on.fb.me/WVTJFK

@7921 – Yes, undermount sinks are possible in laminate. Here’s a blog post we’ve written about it (it’s even complete with a fabrication video so you can see exactly how it’s done): http://bit.ly/LvvR6J

@Matthew Vosburg – The laminate used on this pot rack is actually Petrified Wood 180fx® by Formica Group. We had only seen one image of it that someone had posted on our Facebook page a few months back. Love seeing this second angle. What a great alternative use for laminate!

cmrj we chose Wilsonart laminate for our kitchen reno. I love the look and feel of this product and it wears really well. People think it's real marble when they first enter the room. The cost savings over having real marble or granite kept our budget well within it's limit and we still have that "wow" factor. I would highly recommend it over the cost of the real thing especially if the budget is being stretched.

julie77777 I saw 3 examples of undermount sinks with beautiful looking laminate yesterday at a home show. The "newer" laminates are great-looking - 3-D or HD I think WilsonArt and Formica are calling them. Looking forward to picking out my new countertop soon! Thanks for all info above! (and yes, of course, if I had a new house and plenty of money, I would go with quartz!)

kellystevens I love laminate over plywood like the second photo. Solid colored laminates are my personal preference, I'm not a big fan of material that tries to look like something it's not.

lesliearmstrong @bkdale or anyone with the Basalt Slate - did you get the honed finish or the matte? I'm having a hard time choosing.

aglaja Any ideas on Corian countertops? I have seen it installed with a seamless sink. Very easy to maintain.
