Double oven. Ovens separate from the cooktop offer homeowners more flexibility with their layout. Also, many people prefer raised ovens rather than having to bend down to use a range oven. It's definitely better on your back! If you've got room for this arrangement and can find a spot for your microwave, this is a great setup. In a kitchen like this, a microwave drawer hidden on the back of the island is a great solution. The main sink on the island allows for the sleek electric cooktop to be located on the back wall.

Variations: Double ovens typically come in 24-, 27- and 30-inch widths; the overall heights vary.

Stacked double oven. This is the most familiar setup, and most manufacturers carry versions of this appliance. Most cabinet manufacturers also offer standard tall oven cabinets for this type of appliance. The double oven unit often has one or two drawers below; the appliance is about 10 to 16 inches or so off the ground, including the toe-kick space.

Single oven, microwave and warming drawer combo. This arrangement is also pretty typical. It's terrific if you've got room for a tall cabinet. (I like it best next to other tall pieces, like a refrigerator pantry, as shown here.) This setup is also a great way to make the room for all three of these appliances. I even like to do this with a range so you get an extra oven. This kitchen shows this option with a cooktop and an oven below in the island instead, which makes sense for this kitchen.

Raised side-by-side single ovens. This is an arrangement seen more frequently in modern and contemporary kitchens. It's possible that your cabinet company may offer a single-oven tall cabinet. You can do two of these side by side and make the upper and lower sections a food pantry.
by NURIT GEFFEN-BATIM STUDIO
In some modern kitchen designs you'll see slightly raised single ovens set side by side, alone or with a warming drawer underneath. This can be used as a design element — it gets you a bit of raised, bar-height counter space so you don't lose all that to a couple of tall cabinets. In this kitchen the design creates a semiopen space with the raised ovens; the framing around the refrigerator unit creates a room partition of sorts.
by Debra Toney
Base single ovens, alone or in tandem. Another arrangement is a separate wall oven or two in base cabinets. Shown here flanking a range top is a pretty unusual setup. Some might ask why not just do a 60-inch range with two full-size ovens and more burners? Sure, that would work, but in this case the homeowner is getting a bit more counter space.
by Cynthia Karegeannes, Registered Architect
A setup with two single ovens side by side with base cabinets also works, and it allows you to keep more counter space as well as opposed to having a tall cabinet. Also, some kitchens just don't have the room for tall cabinets, which can make a kitchen feel smaller.
by Andrew Melaragno, AIBD
A single wall oven set in a base cabinet under a cooktop is also an option, but be careful — not every combination of this setup works with every manufacturer. You need to make sure there's room for the cooktop to fit above the oven.

In addition to the well-known built-in oven options, there are a few unique models that take you off the beaten path. This 36-inch gas wall oven with French door access is a commercial-style wall oven for the home kitchen.

Rotisseries are fun accessories for your wall oven. My husband went through Cook's Illustrated and its multiple chicken roasting techniques: rotisserie, grilled, grilled on a beer-can stand, in a roasting dish trussed and nontrussed, turned and not turned — try it out for yourself and find your favorite method!

Lucianna Samu - Color and Design Love these kitchens. Adding a little color such as Benjamin Moore's "August Morning" to my Blue Star makes me smile whenever I look at it.

bubblyjock Wow - you really covered all the bases for oven options here, Rebekah!

I'm totally smitten with the Bluestar oven - cooks like a dream, and is available in 190 GORGEOUS colours.

justcured We are a few days from starting a kitchen renovation project. I settled on three ovens for our kitchen -- a 30" Bluestar and the Wolf convection steam combi oven stacked in the cooking area and a 30" Miele electric convection in the baking area.

compact Nice article. I'm finding more articles, adverts etc talking about multiple ovens.
I feel that this style is being pushed more by manufacturers and shops, with an eye on profits.

Not sure if you get it in the US, but with the Samsung Dual oven, you can split the main section into two separate sections.

This new technology seems to get good reviews and would allow more room in a smaller kitchen for other appliances/storage space and of course could be cheaper..

joaniemichaels I have the GE Profile 30" Single-Double Electric Wall Oven and I love it! You might think it too small but I can get my turkey in it no problem. Love these kitchens!

phiwwy Great article! It would be great to include information on things you need to take into consideration when planning a kitchen renovation that will incorporate wall ovens. Do you need to allow for ventilation/air intake in the design of the cabinet which holds them? Are oven/microwave combos useful? What design/plumbing considerations are necessary for steam ovens?

tcufrog One thing to consider is whether you will actually use both ovens often enough to make the expense worth it. Our kitchen has two dishwashers. With two kids and a mother-in-law living with us half the year I use both of them almost everyday. The second oven ended up being used for storing my mother-in-law's traditional Indian cookware.

Does anyone have advice for using a warming drawer? I never use mine since I'm afraid of overcooking or drying out my food. My older son is getting involved with after school activities though so I think it would come in handy for having a warm meal waiting for us afterward. I'm getting tired of using the crockpot all the time.

ginny20 In many houses in my 1940-built neighborhood, the smallish galley kitchen shares a wall with the attached garage. Our ovens are installed in that wall, taking up space in the garage rather than precious kitchen cabinet and counter space. It's a true "wall oven."

I love my double wall oven, but I do wish more manufacturers offered either side swing or french doors. My old oven had french doors, and it was so much easier to use. The only french door electric oven I found, by American Range, was out of my price range.

CAROLE MEYER I love the side by side ovens and the two ovens flanking the cook top....that is really great!

uffelmad How does the kitchen work triangle perform in some of these configurations? Still a valid concept, I think. I went for the Advantium 220V, the GE trivection oven, and a convection oven my my penninsula stove. Those three pieces give me the performance features of about 5 ovens in about 2 1/2 pieces, and the speedcook technology is awesome. No, I dont work for GE and never have.

rachelmarks I think the secret to a second oven is to install a steamer oven - you can cook rice, warm plates or even keep a meal warm for a long time but still be perfect. I am totally thrilled with our steamer / oven installation.

golfergirl29 Do you have suggestions on putting a refrigerator next to an oven or cooktop? I always thought you tried to keep them separate so the refrigerator didn't have to work extra hard near heat.

compact my 2pence
I've seen plenty of fridges by ovens and hob combo's and they seem to work fine.
Both in upright stacks and as built unders.

If the fridge was right next to a cook top, you'd want a few inches on the side for space to manoeuvre pots, sauces and elbows...

Tenant Proof At some point you will need to repair or replace the ovens and stoves so its important to make sure that they can be easily replaced or repaired without having to redesign your entire kitchen. This is why I prefer free standing ranges with movable prep tables near them.
Jody Thompson GolferGirl29, I just read today that you should keep the refrigerator away from both the oven and the dishwasher to save on cost of cooling. Since I have a remodel at some point in my future, I am also interested in what the designers think about this.

ddelora I have an old 30" Tappan slide-in combo with oven above, gas cooktop, and an oven below - all built as a single unit. I absolutely LOVE it! The bottom oven stopped working after 15 years, and found that no one makes these anymore. Thankfully, our daughter talked us into calling a repairman who fixed it for $100. I don't know how anybody functions with only 1 oven. Yes, it's white with black glass doors, thus not conforming to today's consumer obsession of stainless steel.

But shopping options only left me spending $5,000 for an oven/stovetop and microwave up above - no 2nd oven. I found to install the built-in double oven set up, I would need custom fire-rated cabinets installed, and would have to lose counterspace for the cooktop in another area, which meant more demo and replacing all the countertops so they would match...ad infinitum.

NOTE TO MANUFACTURERS - I would buy a newer version like mine TODAY, if you made it. Just a simple slide in with 2 ovens and a cooktop, as 1 unit. Then I wouldn't have to remodel my entire kitchen just to replace an oven/cooktop. Maybe they're in cahoots with kitchen remodelers....

kaz2 Compact -That oven seems really interesting to me. (the..Samsung Dual oven) We purchased one for the home we are building, just yesterday. It'll be interesting to see how it goes. I love the idea of not using the whole oven, or cooking at different times, even using different temperatures. Then when you do need the full oven you just take out the divider. The only draw back I see is, you need to know what you are doing to use it. It's not one you can't roll up to and use with-in seconds on first glance. We had someone show us and it's like a computer where you click on a button to get to the program you want, then another one to do something else, the dials and buttons do multiple things depending on what program you are in. It should be interesting, but with only two in our house it seemed the best idea,

smittycdm golfergirl29, we put in 30" Dacor double ovens, next to Sub-Zero over/under; the ovens next to the wall & French doors. I called S-Z & was forwarded to the Engineers, on speaker-phone, it was a hoot. They said, "We wish more customers called us." I bet, poor guys, stashed back in their cubicles. They told me their refrigs are perfectly fine next to the ovens, but to be on the safe side "the builder could add some additional insulation." And then they gave me the specs. So if you want to make the day of an Engineer? ;-)

Alesha Desharnais Great article about the options available but I still can't decide on what combo to use. Our kitchen remodel is a few years out, we are still in planning stages. We will have a very large kitchen and I cannot decide on a large double oven range or a cook top with wall ovens.
golfergirl29 Alesha, I've had both and much prefer the cook top with ovens separate and out of the way since I didn't use them as much as the cook top and microwave. I had large drawers under the cook top for the pots and pans, which was terribly convenient. Will never put the microwave over the cook top--too much traffic in one spot.

ennova Golfergirl - I placed a tall pull out pantry between my fridge and stack of microwave oven + oven. Above the appliances are 2 shelves to store items used infrequently. An island sat across this tall cabinet/appliances combo. This is a comfortable arrangement for storing groceries in the fridge and pantry and food preparation and cooking. Hope this helps.

unruli I'd sure LOVE to put a Blue Star in our new home. Unfortunately, there are no gas lines where we'll be building and sadly, there is no hope of getting gas out there any time in the foreseeable future. So.......we're stuck with an electric range. I suppose we can manage to give up our gas hook-up for an AMAZING piece of property with lots of privacy that's yet oh-so-close to shopping necessities.
justcured Unruli,

Two word -- liquid propane. Bluestars run on LP gas as well as natural gas. The home we are renovating does not have natural gas either. The only two things that will be LP powered are the Bluestar wall oven and a backup generator.

catleeng I'm interested in knowing more about user experiences with trivection ovens. I would like to replace our microwave/double combination with trivetion oven, single oven and warming drawer combination. In addition to the age of the existing appliances, for safety reasons, I would like to lower the height of my microwave oven. The turntable in my microwave is presently 64" off the floor! I would also like flexibility to have a second oven for occasions when we're entertaining.

uffelmad I have a 220v advantium and a trivection oven. Both are great appliances so far. The advantium acts as a microwave and a "speedcook" oven. The speedcook works great. The trivection operates like a regular oven but with convection and speedcook. It does not operate as a microwave oven alone. But the speedcook runs microwave along with other cooking modes. I cooked a 25 pound turkey to perfection in under 2 hurs at thanksgiving. It cooks from both the outside and the inside out. I love it.

rouse2 I currently have an oven with a microwave over it on one wall. I don't have space for another oven somewhere else. If I try to put a double oven in then the microwave will be too high to be usable. Should I consider a microwave/convection oven over a large oven, a warming drawer under the oven with the microwave over it, or just leave it as it is (oven with microwave over it)?
