Old Spanish floor tiles on the wall of a modern kitchen. They add vibrant color and patterns without sacrificing the contemporary vibe.

Tiled stair kicks in alternating or random patterns are a lovely way to add pattern and color. They're so evocative of the Mediterranean that they make me want an olive and a glass of red.

In hot climates like southern Spain, North Africa and Mexico, area rugs don't always make sense. A tile "rug" demarcates a space as well as anything in wool.

A tile "area rug" in a Spanish revival style.

Just a bit of tile around the fireplace gives this whole place a hacienda look.

Exuberantly patterned tile can be modern, too. These Cuban Heritage cement tiles are gorgeous in this otherwise unadorned kitchen.

Keep it traditional but add just a hint of playfulness by working in bright patterned tiles with a solid color.

A border with a simple Greek key pattern is elegant and understated but still eye catching.

Mexican Talavera-style tiles with a terra-cotta base. Rustic, bold and lovely.

These 150-year-old Spanish tiles salvaged from an old building look bright and modern in this white bathroom.

Just a single waterfall-like strip of Moroccan tile adds color and life to this neutral, modern bath.

It's not all about color. The shape of these plain white tiles (mirrored in the mirror) is Morocco all over.

Granada Tile's handmade cement tiles in Alhambra. They're old meet new with a very modern use of a very old design. I love it.

An outdoor patio of Mexican paver tiles inset with blues and patterns creates a lovely, elegant courtyard feeling and is so much prettier than plain cement.

Outdoor stairs with tiled kicks. I love unexpected pattern and color used on exteriors.

This tiled patio in the Middle East is an extension of the house and an additional room rather than a separate outdoor area. It's also boho chic as all get-out.

Granada Tile's Fez tiles create a North African oasis in Southern California. This is like a vacation in the backyard.

With some architecture styles, like Spanish revival, tiled hardscaping is just so much better than plain cement or stone. It adds instant cheerfulness.

ls67 Great ideabook. Beautiful tiles.

Another option for global tiles: traditional Athangudi tiles from South India.

homefluffyhome Oh they are just joyful, especially the bright blue and white ones. I would just love to have such a colourful display in my home. I'm lucky at least to have beautiful, if more subdued, clay tiles on the walls of my living room. See the second picture here - they are an original feature of my 1930s home (I'm in England) - http://homefluffyhome.blog.com/2012/11/05/come-on-baby-light-my-fire/

keesje I love bright tiles but am amazed by their prices, particularly here in the UK particularly when you need to cover a whole wall to get the real wow factor. £350/m of tile is just not in my budget!

Casart Coverings I'm bookmarking! Great visuals that give me a lot of inspiration for future designs.

Coincidentally, we have a new Marrakesh inspired MoRockAnSoul Collection that we just introduced as removable and reusable "faux tile" wallcovering. Stair risers + Backsplash + full wall sizes.

808liz This is fabulous. I love tiles. I just also went to Shangri la, Doris Dukes Hawaii home which is decorated w/ amazing tiles she had collected on many of her travels. She was very much into Islamic art & her home is gorgeous. U can Google Shagri la & take a virtual tour. One of these days i am going to have a fabulous tiled kitchen!

Sharon McLeod Love all these great ideas. When I was in Mexico I was dying to bring back a bunch of their beautiful tile with blues and yellows!!! There was a sink, as well as a mirror with tile around it - I just couldn't figure out how to fit them in my luggage!

custom-tiles.com Through this great article and pictures, more people may find value in beautiful tiles and learn that they can be custom printed. Yes, custom printed tiles (ceramic, glass, porcelain, and tumbled marble) with any artwork or patterns. So many people appreciate the value of artistic custom tiles but are not aware how easily available they are.

Norberry Tile Curious how pattern and color are widely embraced in sunnier climates, whereas it's subtle tones and texture in the North, especially Northwest USA.
