missychum I made a tree simple skirt out of green felt. Red blanket stitch around the outside and then I made cut and clued hand and foot reindeer out of felt onto it. The face of the reindeer is their footprint and each antler is traced from their hands. The plan is to add new reindeer each year as the kids grow. I will try to add photos in a few weeks when we get our tree and get it out of the crawlspace.

olldbobbi Well, these certainly beat the white twin sized sheet I used for years ! This year we bought a white velvet Christmas tree skirt from Home Depot - $20.00. My favorite in this collection is the Little Town of Bethlehem.

JAN MOYER You know those fuzzy inexpensive white blankets in queen size that cost about 19.99? YUP! Fantastic! They look like snow, you can swirl around and toss in the wash... and they look LIKE SNOW! ?? Yeah those! : )

sjmom Love a pretty Christmas tree skirt and tried to make one years ago. Didn't work out too well so I went and purchased one. Couldn't quite match my idea though.

JAN MOYER The first problem with tree skirts : ) is they are generally a standard size.... is the tree standard? Probably not! So (lol) you get this weird little round fussy thing at the bottom, that is over decorated and actually competes with your beautiful tree. I love a big huge blanket, because you can swirl it OUT to a diameter equal to the tree..... and it's white... okay maybe I am crazy, but it allows the tree to shine, it's proportional, "feels" like the snow... and most everyone has one right upstairs in the linen closet. Now you have money for another present?! I must be crazy..... just hate those little bitty things with the doo dads...you can shoot me

butteross I love the idea of using the blanket and home decorations. 600 dollars for a tree skirt! Really?

sclawson Love the snowy shag tree skirt but $600? You've got to be kidding. I just bought a big pillow out of the same stuff at Target for $25.

tammis What???? Those prices are Ridiculous!!! I have been accumulating Christmas decorations for the past 25 years....after Christmas sales 75% off!!! I now have a collection of the most beautiful xmas treasures for a third of the cost!!!

At The Picket Fence Some of these prices are definitely on the higher end but I think it is fun to just get great ideas and inspiration, don't you? You could always make your own version and get better bang for your buck right? It's always great to dream and then make your own reality!

larryboy47 Go to a thrift store, find a cape in the outerwear section of women's wear, and use it as a tree skirt, or go to the clearance section of your local fabric shop and find a bolt of something you love...fur, velvet, burlap...and buy a few yards to use under the tree, just swirl it around under there and tuck in ends under itself to hide raw edges.

mrsben Have to agree, some of the prices are crrrrrrrrrazy!

If one wishes a couture or decorative tree skirt; for large trees use a decorative table cloth (or a blanket as Jan Moyer suggests). If need be, cut it in about thirds and seam together to form a continuous long strip. If not a sewer, use iron-on bonding tape to seam and finish off raw edges. For smaller (table-top) ones, a table runner or even a long garment scarf will work. Loosely wrap it around the bottom of the trunk and fan out at the base of the tree slightly overlapping each section until you have a relaxed look .... not just a circle.

scarbowcow I'm glad someone said something about buying a cape at a thrift shop, because I could seriously consider wearing the black one with the embroidery (or is it beadwork?) of New York City.
Now if only I could find it in a thrift shop, marked down to, oh, $5.00?

marythaler Great ideas! I happen to love the new Luxe Faux Fur tree skirts by restoration hardware, just bought one of these gems myself!

Janet Broaddus I love lots of gold with just a touch of red to decorate with so I bought about 4 yards of gold lame and without sewing, wrap it in a full and luxurious way around the bottom of our tree.

chenotplace One year I was a little desperate for a skirt and tossed a piece of faux fur fabric under the tree. It is a really soft snow leopard fur and has become my favorite skirt of all time - and it provides a nice contrast to the sparkling ornaments and lights.

ploefff It took me a while to realize a tree skirt is not the same as what we use here in Denmark. I was wondering about the hole in the middle until I got that it's because you tie it around the stem to hide the stand - a little lightbulb moment there.
Here we put a round decorative rug under the tree to catch the faling needles. I live in a small space so I also get a small tree usually a pottet one that I transfer to a pretty planter which eliminates the need to hide an unsightly stand.

This year we're celebrating Christmas with children so the tree needs to be a little bigger (Still nowhere near as big as the ones I see in pictures from the US - more like adult height) I came up with a way to still use the planter as a stand. Since it tapers in at the bottom I need to cut 2 circles of plywood with holes in the middle. One larger to fit near the top of the egde and a smaller one to fit lower in the pot to stabilize the tree and then use split apart clothes pins to make the tree stand straight by using the as wedges in the top hole....and of the the workshop to saw.

The picture is a KARDEMUMMA planter from Ikea. Mine has a different pattern but is the same size.

Mackenzie Austin Design The ridiculously priced $600 fur skirt gave me an idea...how about a few faux sheepskins from IKEA? At $10 each...well, you can't really go wrong.

trasgorshek I went with a basket this year instead of a skirt. I'm really enjoying it. I always tend to fuss with the skirt as presents start to gather.
