If you're considering installing a fireplace, a freestanding model can be a good pick. It can be installed for much less cost than a full fireplace wall since it generally won't have a stone fascia, lights, or millwork. Styles range from simple and pragmatic to stunning modern designs that serve as sculpture as well as a primary heat source.

Heavy duty. This intense, vintage style is strictly for heating — you won't be able to view the flames since there's no glass on the doors. Heavy-duty construction means money saved on the heat bill. Tip: Use piles of firewood as a design element in your living space.

Wall mounted. Free up floor space by installing your fireplace unit directly onto the wall. This space puts the perfect spin on yesterday's model.
Tip: Don't think just in black — a unit like this in white could be a showstopper.

Miniature. Bigger isn't always better. The small nature of this freestanding fireplace complements this room very well, especially with the overextended flue. This size tends to work best when you don't need to heat the entire room. Tip: Just because it's freestanding doesn't mean you can't have built-in seating. Search for a fireplace that has a bench for those chilly nights.
High style. Here, an all-white minimalist lacquered box with gas flames does the trick. Tip: Advances in fireplace design mean that many fireplaces can be placed in any room of the house.

Built-in look. This fireplace is freestanding but has the look of a built-in. Add to the beauty of your unit by setting it inside a niche of its own.
Tip: Tile the back wall of the recess for extra flair.

Creatively placed. Your freestanding fireplace doesn't have to be a focal point, and it doesn't have to be in any particular room, either. This foyer fireplace invites visitors to get warm as soon as they walk in.
Tip: A fireplace in the entry or foyer is a great way to dry winter boots, hats and mittens in colder weather.

Retro. Revive a retro style by adding a quintessential fireplace to take you back in time. The cherry-red color of this one says vintage like nothing else. I had a similar one in my childhood home. Tip: Use the hue of the fireplace as an accent color and complement it with pillows, candles or rugs. Browse freestanding fireplaces in Products

We are strongly considering to put in a stove but still think about the perfect model and placement. It's not an easy decision.
The stove in pic #2 would blend in better with a more rustic decor, no? That room looks a bit too contemporary. Or if they'd given it a shiny coat of black paint, that might work also.
When we wanted the fireside experience further from the front door, we opted for a gas fireplace, shopping for the most realistic real burning look we could find.
Love them both!!
Always make sure your main log pile is accessible to the house, and that you then have easy access from there to the fireplace.
We are installing a Morso 7670 wall mounted stove in our new home. It will draw outside air to burn wood leaving heated air in the home.

You are correct about log size and yes we will cut our own wood. The house will be super insulated and use PV powered geo-thermal heat pumps. The house is also situated correctly to avoid solar gain during the summer. It's amazing what can be accomplished when building from the ground up.
