A Great Color Combination: Green Meets Gray
There are some color combinations that are simply not seen very often, and for some reason the mix of green into a gray interior falls in this category. In fact, it took quite of bit of searching through photos on Houzz to find enough examples for this Ideabook. So much so that in a few of the rooms featured here the presence of green in the gray color scheme is in the form of plants!
Introducing green into a gray interior is a very fresh and modern color palette that can result in a serene and unexpectedly beautiful look. It is a color mix I'd just love to try in a room myself!

| There is so much to adore about this bedroom, with the sweeping angles of the ceiling and light pouring in from every side. The gray and dusty blue palette is soothing, with small touches of green introduced through the presence of the modern green chair and a floral arrangement. How completely peaceful. Private Comment

| This room is made up of a subtle combination of gray, white, taupe, and brown. The light streaming in from the windows wash out the range of colors so that the space reads soft gray as a whole. A tall green arrangement placed on the table becomes the lively point of the space. Private Comment

| A gray and white kitchen receives a touch of color when a far wall is painted green. This choice leads the eye out the window to the green beyond while bringing the kitchen design to life. Private Comment

| Here is the kitchen from another view. Without the slice of green in the foreground, this kitchen image could be nearly be mistaken as a black and white photo. Private Comment

In a nearly all gray space with dramatic floor to ceiling windows, a dividing wall painted green is virtually the only color in the space. Imagine the room without this block of green, it would loose a large portion of its interest.

It appears a large number of the images for this Ideabook come from the same design firm. Obviously they are not only fans of this color mix but are experts at it as well. Here a quiet living room is given a delightful punch of color with the addition of the yellow green chair and ottoman, along with a touch more green through the floral arrangement.

Here the green is seen through a large painting, which becomes the focal point of the room. More green is introduced with pillows and a floral arrangement.

A gray exterior is given a dash of high style with the addition of a green door.

| Here is another image of the same building, this time from the interior. The green door brings a somewhat surprising and welcoming aspect to the modern design and if I were decorating this home the door color would be the beginning inspiration. Private Comment

I suppose asking for brand name and color codes would be stepping over the line. I have been searching for the 'right' grey. I have grey squares on my living room walls while I try to find the right grey. Any ideas would be appreciated. Grey's a tough cookie.

Janell, I love this combination. Taking cues from nature always seems to work and gray with green reminds me of summer days just before a storm where trees and dark clouds come together. Love that!

The photo of the green chair in the living room is so appealing to me. It's very soothing and I think that's interesting because normally I wouldn't think of that green as soothing. It just speaks to me. And frankly, I'm so into gray right now that I don't think it can do any wrong!

sw0023 sherwin williams is the most stellar! gray, it is easy on the eyes, warm, very rich, and sooo neutral and yet in the same token it makes a non neutral bold statement! Check it out... ps, the cashmere paint at sherwin williams is known for it's ease of application and is touch up capable. It is extremely covering. It is scrubbable and kick resistant.

My favorite gray, at the moment, is BM "Pale Oak". I have swatches all over my living room in our new house and am about to start painting! Great with some "Iron Mountain" accents.

We're in the last couple of weeks of finishing our house in Costa Rica. The house consists of a main building with two smaller buildings connected by a hallway on either side. The exterior color combo is a taupe gray with lime green painted in the indented hallway areas and chili red accents for the doors and metal tubes that sup-port the front and back roof overhangs. It is a totally different combo among the tropical pastels often found here. The taupe and lime green combo will also be seen in the interior. I'll send photos when all is finished.

I was searching for the perfect grey for my bathroom that has a white marble tile floor with light salmon and grey colour marble tile and a darker grey and salmon granite counter with burnt orange cabinetry. After 3 sample pots, I found "Pure White" from Benjamin Moore - it's actually a very light pearly grey. It has very little yellow and no red in it.

This was perfect timing! I'm considering a green door (and maybe shutters) for our (light) gray sided house. Anyone have more pictures of exteriors?

OMG! My kitchen renovation is just about complete and I am doing a gray-green combination but can't quite get the green right. Thanks for the great photos. I think I'm going to do a yellowy-green like the one you have above with that great chair next to the lillies. Your post gave me validation! Will post photo when I get the wall painted.

Well aren't I happy!! Would love to see photos when you are done with the kitchen project. As for a green paint color suggestion, I actually find greens a very hard color to pick and would suggest getting a fan deck to look at the whole range of greens by various paint companies, holding up the cards next to the exterior of your house. Pick two or three favorites and test on the shutters and door. Paint always looks at least slightly different once painted and dry...so trail and error is really often the only method to find just the right color.

I did the opposite of gray with green. I did green with gray in my kitchen. My current house has zero architectural charm or interest. I recently moved from a 1930s historic cottage in New Orleans to a 1980 subdivision house that completely lacks any architectural interest and has little natural light. I decided the only thing to do was to ramp up the happy factor with color. Of course, it doesn't hurt I love color due to 49 years living in New Orleans and the influence of its Caribbean roots. My kitchen is very quirky but it's "me" and I love working in it every day. When I took the photos i still needed glass in one of the cabinets...but you get the idea. The countertop is soapstone laminate and the large tile floor has subtle gray veining.

Funny, one of the options on your personal Houzz page is to change the background color to gray. When you select this option a lot of the word blocks, names and links become green. I never noticed it until this idea book, and it does look great together.

What I think is so appreciated here is how the green softens the very industrial gray.
Here is some cabinet hardware in green by Nifty Nob. Paint out cabinets or furniture gray and add a touch of color with the hardware.

Love this color combination and it happens to be the color palette of my home -- Grey with touches of lime and citrine! To me, lime is such a playful color like a jolt of happy. Favorite Grey is "Mouse's Back" by Farrow and Ball.

I love this color combination. I noticed that in many pictures of gray walls with green accents, the furniture is generally a lighter color; mostly whites. Do you think gray walls and green accents could work with very dark colored furniture? (I NEED to update my dining room/living room combo and have started purchasing green accents and art for the walls....wondering if gray walls would mesh with dark brown furniture. For example: dining room table is made of mango wood...dark.)
