4. My grandma's house was built with mud and straw which had sparrows living in the kitchen, mice in the loft and dog living outside aside from no running water and indoor toilet. so cant really use that.

pharmanci Very good, Jody! As for your first entry, a bunch of physicians chose an architect to build their homes, well, because "everyone was using him". The results: one finished basement was so low that adults had to crawl, one fireplace had the owner stooping to the floor to build a fire, one guest bedroom had half a closet, and one office had a restroom with the sink stopping the door from closing. The last one was mine....Thank you for this hilarious post!

majordad If that's the way it works in the USA, then you must know how the residential market works in South Africa. The clients are friends...of .... And want a return of at least 10 times the input cost, with labour skills causing my grey hair, then only the client architect agreement saves the embarrassment of quibbles. I appreciate the candour of the presentation, great!

belladia So where were you a year ago when I started the remodel with a "highly recommended" architect, "award-winning interior designer" and "honest" contractor? I had to remind the architect that there is more to a contemporary home than just large windows. I nixed the interior designer's idea of all white silk decor (at the beach, with a dog? duh). And the "honest" contractor came with a "red light warranty" . . . you know, the warranty that lasts as long as you can see the red lights of his departing truck. Your article made me laugh through my tears, even as I beat my head on the misplaced light switch.

Bette Pitiful, but true. I am at the last comment. I am doing a reno. I have an outside light switch on a 6X6 pillar. It isn't recessed. Then the electrician comes and puts the horrendous plastic cover that protrudes another 4 inches. This is the butt ugliest thing ever. I have done renovations and design before, but this takes the ugly cake.

olldbobbi Bette, I'll take your butt ugly 4" cover, and raise you three of them. Yes, in my back yard. AND, we have black widow spiders here so you can't open those covers without wearing dragon hide gloves.

stargazer51 So funny. Here I sit in the tiny inlaw unit of our slightly more than tiny house that has been completely gutted. And is still completely gutted but at least we have a new roof. My husband is in the hospital after having surgery on his heel because he broke it falling off a ladder last week. And I'm sure we'll have enough money to finish it (?) and we'll look back on all this and laugh. I'm sure of it.
