Take the bobbing-for-apples look to the next level with this creative DIY centerpiece from Doreen at Hymns and Verses. Because of the easy-to-find materials, it's a great last-minute decorating option for any fall get-together.

Tip: Before bringing acorns inside, it's a good idea to clean them thoroughly to be sure you're not bringing in any bugs. Simply rinse the acorns in a bowl and gently scrub them with a soft brush. Check for holes in the shells and toss any that look suspicious. Allow them to air dry thoroughly. Optional: After washing the acorns, bake them on a foil-lined cookie sheet at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes.

annerobin how do you make the acorn candles? love that idea

sclawson Love the painted acorns. These would make great Christmas tree ornaments and would be an easy project to involve children. I've done walnuts painted and decked out to look like strawberries before with my daughter. You could do that with acorns, or just gild them to be extra-special acorns.

Amber Hopman @annerobin, it's a great idea, isn't it? Here is a good tutorial that I found: http://www.thegunnysack.com/2011/09/tutorial-tuesday-floating-acorn-candles.html. Looks pretty easy!

imissliberty The centerpiece "acorns" looked like hazelnuts, to me.

Amanda Simons Yay more ideas for the plethora of acorns on the ground!

annemauerman Yes, those are hazelnuts, not acorns, floating with those apple candles. Still a fun nut idea though.
