The Magazine Stand in the Modern Home
I work as a blogger for businesses although I do a variety of different types of writing. I particularly enjoy writing about all aspects of design and creativity. I think that your home should reflect your personality and that it should change as you change. More about me at www.kathrynvercillo.com and http://diaryofasmartchick.com.

The magazine stand or magazine rack is not something that you see in every home today. Sure, a lot of us do keep magazines around the home. And some of us get creative in the way that we display them. But there are just as many homes that don't bother with the magazine rack. It's too bad because this little accessory adds a lot of statement to a space.
The magazine rack can say a few things. It can say, "hey, kick up your feet and relax here". It can say, "this is an intellectual home where ideas are valued". It can say, "this is the room for solitude".
A good modern magazine rack says what you want it to. It also serves a function. It un-clutters and organizes your space . It adds to the design aesthetic of the apartment or home. It is one little detail that makes a big impact even though it shouldn't overpower the rest of the space. Taking the time to find the right magazine stand is a great move.

| One of my favorite designs is the end table with a built-in magazine rack. This allows you to leave the magazine open on the table for a moment or it provides a place for you to set your coffee while you read your magazine. This thing, natural design is a gorgeous option. Private Comment

This vintage magazine stand is so powerful that it almost overpowers the wonderful chaise lounge chair. That's not typically a good thing in home design but it works here because it makes the chaise seem comfy and inviting while the stand itself seems like an indulgence.

A simple metal basket hung on the wall can be a great modern magazine rack. It helps to really de-clutter the space without influencing the design of the room too much. Choosing an unusually-shaped basket will give the piece some personality without overdoing it.

The standard magazine stand in the bathroom is a little bit dated these days. This terrific on-the-wall magazine rack is a great modern alternative. I would hang a few decorative vintage wash towels to enhance the artsiness of the rack.

I love the built-in magazine rack in the modern home. This example is built into a kitchen island and serves to hold cookbooks and recipe magazines. However, any piece of furniture could have a built-in area for magazines. Stylish and convenient especially in homes where space is an issue.

Your built-in magazine rack doesn't have to be something that is always visible. This hidden magazine rack is a terrific idea; just open up the cupboard and there are all of those magazines you've been meaning to read. This is great for hiding those trashy gossip magazines that you don't want guests to know you read!

For those magazines that you do want to show off in your home, a traditional bookcase or cabinet will do. This one is set up to prop the magazines up, covers facing forward, for a terrific display. The display adds to the artistic decor of the space.

If you don't have too many bold furnishings in a room then it's worth it to invest in a high-quality magazine stand. The one at the side of this couch is rich and gorgeous although simple enough to suit the room.

The simple open-faced magazine stand is a great choice especially in a room like this with modern low-slung furniture.

| The magazine rack built into the wall of this room is designed to look like drawers that can be pulled out of the wall. It matches the cabinets and wood furnishings wonderfully but adds a bit of surprise to the room's design. Private Comment

I just love this space. Modern, open and bright. This is positively expansive. Could just walk right in it is so inviting! Here is an expansive space in Palo Alto, CA that has a bit of a similar feel to it.

'The painted home' picture is actually the side rail of an old iron baby crib. I used one for my first child (before crib rail openings were supposed to be regulation width). It was so beautiful and elegant... later I used it as a daybed on my porch by removing one of the side rails, which I then used in the garden as a ladder for my clematis to climb on. It looks great as a magazine stand and towel rack, too!

I just completed and photographed this project for a bathroom remodel. I designed a magazine rack into the side of the linen cabinet.

I just sat down to open my email and saw your ideabook. I was excited to see that you included my client's hidden mail slots. It wasn't actually supposed to be a magazine holder, but as you can see, my client quickly discovered it was a great place to hide hers. Thanks for including me in your fabulous lineup.
