Materials:
• Glue gun
• Extra glue sticks
• Inexpensive bowls and platters of different shapes and styles
Tip: Make sure the bowls you choose are wide enough to support your platter, so it will be sturdy and able to support the weight of the food.

Tip: Make sure the bowls you choose are wide enough to support your platter, so it will be sturdy and able to support the weight of the food.
Apply a thin coat of glue on the bottom rim of the bowl or mug (the base of the cake stand). Work quickly; hot glue dries fast.
Tip: You can take your cake stands apart again later, if you wish. Just place them in the freezer for a half hour to shrink and harden the glue, making it easy to peel off. You can also use craft putty as a more temporary, reusable option.

As soon as the layer of glue has been applied, center on the base the plate or platter that is going to be the top of the cake stand. Press lightly and hold it for a few seconds while the glue is setting. Allow the glue to dry for at least a half hour before using or moving your cake stand.

Experiment with platter shapes and heights for variety across your table.
Tip: The glue should keep your cake stand together for many celebratory occasions if you take care of the piece properly. After use, carefully hand wash the stand with warm water.

Cupcakes and a cake alike will shine on these impromptu cake stands. Combine your favorite colors to create an enticing palette for the dessert table. These colors nicely complement chocolate frosting.

Blues and Whites
You wouldn't use your grandmother's precious china, but put flea market finds to good use by combining vintage cups and plates in a color scheme of your choice.

A large plate for the base will provide extra sturdiness as well as more space for treats. You can experiment with stacking additional tiers without glue; just be sure the plate can support the food items.

If your occasion has a theme, decorate with an intentional color scheme, such as this yellow, blue and white one used for a buffet-style tea station. Use your tiered cake stand to display cookies.

Using a wide-mouthed bowl as the base for this cake stand creates a simple but sleek look. Use tall mugs paired with curved bowls to display colorful treats at your next birthday party.

wildmare Fantastic ideas! I am going through my cupboards and china cabinet looking at ideas! Yes, the thrift stores are in my radar! Nice to know they can be easily dismantled too. I would not have thought to use hot glue gun technique. Thanks

picabelle I've tried this idea but used epoxy, which is permanent. Love the hot glue technique. If you're making a tiered stand, look for the flattest plates you can find. If the plate is too curved then the items sink toward the middle and cupcakes sit at a tilt. Endless combinations with thrift store dishes and since they're so inexpensive you can make a bunch, fill with cookies or whatever, package nicely and give as gifts. (You can use short glass candlesticks as a base as well.)

davesmac Goodwill house ware prices have gone up drastically. But, they are still a good bargain when using in crafts. I like the epoxy idea for the permanent fix. Thanks for sharing.

bocadebo I have been looking for a cake stand for a long time that did not take up a lot of storage space. Now I have an endless variety of cake stands that take up no extra storage space. Thank you!

Beth In summer when we eat outside around the pool/patio a lot, we use plastic garden pots with a epoxy glued pot saucer. Have in the past taken terra cotta pot and saucer and used food grade glaze on the saucer part, which I then took to a ceramic shop to have fired. Cost was less than $7 total. Like others I recommend using epoxy which is water proof.

honolulululu Thank you! What a great idea for gifts. Ive been trying to come up with a personlized gift for a friend with a new kitchen. I also can't wait to try varying heights for a buffet.

Susie Q Design Studio I've been doing this for years because I don't have the budget or space to store a bunch of beautiful tiered pieces. I've used melted wax to bind mine together. It just scrapes off and the residue can be washed off with hot water and dish soap or some "Goo Gone".

marsia This would work with a big serving plate and a ceramic pot for a bird bath, too. You would just need to stucco them together. Nice idea!

katcorr My daughter and I have made quite a few of these for gifts. I personally don't recommend hot glue, as I don't think it has the holding power for the long term. We use epoxy and haven't had any problems at all. We also use thrifted plates from our local Goodwill. We've gone for the clear glass plates and we use candlesticks for the bases. They are great for creating different heights and look less artsy-craftsy than bowls and mugs do as bases. We've used them for holidays, a wedding, and various birthday parties, and everyone we've given them to have loved them.

Beth Just made a new cake holder using one of my Fiestaware dinner plates and I love it. Found a nice pre glazed flower pot that goes well with the plate and it looks so nice on the table with my Fiestaware dinner plates etc.

happyjackjane I did a similar thing with cut glass. I used silicone glue instead of glue sticks. It's permanent, instead of temporary...so make sure that's what you really want.

hausbucher Love these ideas! I have done this with terra cotta planters and used a product called "Liquid Nails" to glue them together. To serve food I cut wax paper to fit or use a paper doily found in the cake decorating section of craft stores. I should have cut the wax paper a bit better but you get the idea!

wildmare Melamine dishes have been resurrected! Now with all the new and wonderful patterns and designer colours in melamine dishes, there are more design elements that can be utilized to make these cake stands and serving dishes. Enjoy giving them as inexpensive gifts, for summer patio entertaining, bridal showers, Cupcake displays and potluck socials. Too fun!
