Light-Up Mirrors Offer Bright Design Solutions

This polished powder room is a great use of space. If the mirror didn't have the built-in lighting, the design would be much more complicated. What kind of light could the designer have installed? How large could the mirror have been?
The round shape allows for a much larger mirror size and looks nice against the angled ceiling. The fact that the mirror is also the light source simplifies the design challenge.

I've heard that side lights make applying makeup much easier (although I can't say I know from experience). These new mirrors have the same effect as an old-school Hollywood dressing room mirror, but without the bulbs running down the side.
The light output is great, but care should be taken when selecting the type of LED lighting. LED lighting shades can differ from one company to the next. Warm and cool whites are available in LED, so get a preview of both if possible.

Here we see a great example of built-in warm white light in a mirror. Warmer white tends to work well with warm-hued tile and paint colors. Cooler white lights work well in white and blue bathrooms.

Yet another design challenge solved with this custom corner mirror. A small vanity in the corner often means you can't get lighting on the side without shoving a light fixture awkwardly into the corner. The use of the second mirror solves this problem. It's a clever design and creates a very sleek look.

The lights for these mirrors can be RGB — LED lights that change colors and turn your mirror into color therapy. You can choose whatever color makes you feel most happy or relaxed. Imagine taking a bath with the lights slowly scrolling through thousands of colors. Or maybe you have a migraine and choose light purple only, as it's the most soothing for your pounding head.
If you're using chromotherapy (color therapy) or night lighting elsewhere in the room, I suggest you get the lighting all from one supplier and don't mix warm white lighting with cool white lighting in the same space.

The sky is the limit in mirror design. It's easy to have mirrors made and sandblasted. The lights can be installed on the back and reflected through the sandblasted areas.

We installed some privacy film over this bathroom's window and mounted the electric mirror onto a custom support.
Low-voltage leads for the mirror snake up between the windows in a dado cut and are covered with the original window trim stock. All of the wires are encased in some flex conduit, which protected them when the trim was reinstalled.

The last picture is a custom mirror I designed with the help of my client and had made for use by Moe @ Glass Topia. You are limited only by your imagination if you work with a custom glass artist like Moe! Moe's web site is here http://www.glasstopia.ca
You will need to work with a good GC and will need power and low voltage wiring. The mirror you see in my project is wired with a dimmer. An Electronic dimmer.
On my next Electric Mirror I'm going to design it with both RGB LED and Bright White LED's. We should have it installed in a few weeks. I share it here once finished.

Once completed I'll do a good play by play on the Chromotherapy Electric Mirror we are designing for the Coquitlam Project.

Before the mirror arrived my electrician installed a new LED transformer which he connected to an electronic dimmer. The mirror then connected the low voltage wire from the LED's on the mirror to the low voltage supply that my electrician had ready.
That's it.
I could see light up mirrors built with any kind of light source - so perhaps yours might use some halogen or florescent lights. In this case different wiring schemes would be needed. Check with the maker of the mirror what the power requirements are.
The LED's we installed in our custom mirror are rated for 20,000 hours. To replace the LED's the mirror just needs to be lifted off the French Cleat that is used to secure it in place.

I'd love to see some more examples in the comment section.

What I am imagining is that one would take a standard mirror, mask-off the perimeter around the desired light transmission portion, and then sand-blast-off the mirror coating on the back side, at the same time creating a matte translucent surface which allows light to pass through but prevents a clear view of the lighting hardware behind the glass. Is this a resasonable approach? Please correct the described process and fill in the blanks to fabricate one's own lighted mirror design. I am currently redesigning a bathroom in an expensive home and could use this design concept to advantage. Looking forward to your custom construction details. Thanks much
You can see more of this mirror here at Holger Hoos Design's Houzz page.

This is the first project I completed for Holger and features a LED side light feature on both sides of the mirror. The mirror in this room is two way and conceals a monitor that displays all sorts of great art and even poems!

The grout is from Laticrete - Epoxy (Raven I believe it's called)
Hope that helps!
Happy New Year!!

I have been chatting with the Kitchen and bath designers over on the LinkedIn NKBA site and one lady mentioned an excellent point. She mentions that certain lighting makes applying make up better for different venues. IE if you have bright lights at the office a cool bright light will make your efforts more appealing. If you heading out for a low light dinner then a warmer light will work best.
I'm going to try and incorporate all three into my next project and have them switchable.
Colour RGB
Cool White
Warm White
I think this will make for a great test subject.
I will post my findings here in the next couple of months.

That said you can easily go here with materials
MIrror - $200.00 with sand blasting
Heat Sink - $20.00 (Aluminumum right angle stock)
Low Voltage LED's with driver - $80.00 (White)
Upcharge for colour - $100.00
Dimmer - $100.00 (Electronic if you want control from a wall switch)
My client paid me about $1,200.00 in total for the mirror we installed in her bathroom. Some of the ready made mirrors I believe are well over $2,000.00
This is not an inexpensive option for sure.
I posted a little more info on the mirror design here on Terry Love Plumbing Forum http://www.terrylove.com/forums/showthread.php?47501-Building-a-Custom-Electric-Mirror-Sometimes-simple-is-best!
To increse the light output we used another mirror to box in the lighting.
I'm not sure how Moe installed the heat sink to the mirror but perhaps a 3M double sided tape???

My 2 year old wiped my phone and I lost the photo from the Fairmont Waterfront in Vancouver, BC. So imagine my surprise when we stayed at the surprisingly modern Holiday Inn in Amarillo, TX (constructed in 2011) and they too had a lighted mirror mounted over another mirror.
I have to say I really liked this application in both hotels. The one at the Fairmont is a mock-up room and isn't widely available, where as it's standard at the Holiday Inn. In both bathrooms there were other sources of light as well.
This photo is also taken on my phone so it isn't the best quality.
Thanks,
Nicole
Either way you get into some tricky drywall work to pull of the end result.
Perhaps try some of the glass edging creams mentioned above. The LED lights are not that expensive but require a electrcian to prep for.
Good Luck.

We are building a new one as we speak for a buddy and just had to reject the glass order. There was some scratches in the custom mirror.
The electric mirrors from the Electric Mirror company all have nice finished frames. We are going to install ours as a floating mirror and are leaving the edges just polished. I'm hoping I'll get a slight glow on the sides to tie into the whole Choromatheraphy thing we have going on.
Glass panel is en-route for the shower and we have back lit it. I can not wait to install this. Should have a rough in picture ready for days end. JW
The colour RGB can be switched to white light and used with the regular white light to produce a good light for applying makeup and such.
2" outer mirror strip then 3" sand blasted strip and then full mirror in the middle.
Turned out much brighter than I thought. The client is blown away. JW
"Chubby's" = Designer Carpenter Pencil, Level and Ruler in one.
Dare I ask what they cost? They look amazing!!! JW
