Go from a formal to a downright regal dining room by adding an impressive old-world chandelier. It makes for a great focal point and is a fairly easy way to glam up a room.

Landscape Architect Rob Schwarz frequently uses armillary spheres as a lighter, more dimensional focal point in the garden. "An armillary evokes a sense of movement in the landscape," he says. "Seeing sun shadows cast onto the ground at different times of day adds interest to the ground plane."

catbird7 One thing missing here is color. Here's our armillary sphere, painted a Victorian scarlet.

GONZALO DE SALAS Amber, reading your article has remind me of a project that as sculptor I did last year.
Thanks for refreshing our minds with this wonderful ideas!

Here I post a few pictures of my own interpretation of an armillary sphere. (A modern one)
I did it for a client that was a collector of these types of spheres. I didn't know about it, and while I was showing him other sculpture projects as well as some sketches of ideas that were still to make, he saw my armillary sphere and just loved it.

It is made in rusted corten steel, in a patina that lasts perfectly outdoors, and the "planets" are made in marble.

I invite you all to see more about outdoor sculpture and furniture design on my site:
