Having grown up in this home, this San Rafael, California, homeowner was ready for a brand-new look — including a dramatically different kitchen. After gutting the space, interior designer Alison Davin of Jute Interior Design put in classic Shaker cabinetry and stainless steel appliances, accessorizing only with a bold and bright backsplash. An open layout visually expands the 12- by 12-foot space.

| With three daughters in the house, it made sense that the clients wanted an indestructible — but beautiful — kitchen. Custom Shaker-style cabinetry, dark oak floors and Caesarstone countertops fit the bill. A swing door leads in and out of the kitchen. Davin installed floor-to-ceiling cabinetry to the left of the door for the family's pantry. Surrounded by white cabinetry and countertops, the brilliant backsplash is the kitchen's immediate focal point. The clients wanted a glass backsplash and something fun. Davin worked with them to find a textile they both loved, and used that as inspiration.
Working with Ann Sacks, Davin custom designed the size, pattern and color palette of the glass tiles.

The clients also had a banquette on their kitchen wish list. The cozy seating area allows their girls to have friends over and snack in the kitchen.

| The banquette was built around the table, which the clients had custom made and loved. Davin had the exterior wall bumped out a bit so the banquette could fit into the kitchen's open layout. Storage built into the banquette seating holds table linens and place settings. I would like to see the herringbone continued on to the wall behind banquette (where clock is positioned). Hard to confirm without 360 photos but based on the ones shown it would likely give even greater cohesion between the spaces but without "over egging the pie"!
I like the backsplash but it looks overwhelming. I would have more of that blue on the walls to balance it out. Not everywhere, but some.
