Glam in the living room. Interior designer Jamie Drake had his eye focused on emerald when he put together this dazzling room for the Kips Bay show house in New York.
by Rikki Snyder
Natural in the living room. If you're intrigued by emerald but aren't ready to commit to full walls or upholstery jobs, bring it in via nonpermanent textiles and accessories, like pillows, rugs, plates, bottles, drapes or glassware.
by Cristi Holcombe
Glam in the bath. The glossier surfaces in this bathroom give emerald a contemporary Hollywood-glamour moment.
by Laura Britt Design
Natural in the bath. Emerald brings in strong color and calm to this well-balanced bathroom.

Glamorous accent pieces. As a jewel tone, it also lends elegance to rooms bedecked in metallics and marble.
by Domicile Interior Design
Natural accent pieces. Because it's a color found in nature, emerald works with rustic natural materials, like glass, wood and rope.
by Cristi Holcombe
Glam in the kitchen. This kitchen's emerald isle takes its hue from a luxurious floral Stark wall covering.
by O Interior Design
Natural in the kitchen. An antiqued paint finish on these cabinets adds a rustic, farmhouse-inspired touch.

Glam in the bedroom. Malachite may come from nature, but it's a high-end kind of nature. This large-scale piece on the wall is a showstopper.
by Carlyn And Company Interiors + Design
Natural in the bedroom. A cheeky faux bois bedspread and other natural textures create a restful, contemporary bedroom.

Glam chair. A large and bright porter's chair makes a strong design statement in this bright white entryway.

Natural chair. Paired with warm and light neutrals, these green chairs enliven the room with their color and geometric pattern.

Glam in the office. An animal print on a bergère chair and a glossy parson's desk stand out in front of an emerald wall.
by Story & Space - Interior Design and Color Guidance
Natural in the office. Emerald hues were popular during the Arts and Crafts era, which looked to nature for color palettes.
by Andrew Melaragno, AIBD
Perfect pairing. I like a green such as emerald, kelly or apple best paired with crisp black and white. It's a graphically bold and fresh move.

What do you think of Pantone's decision? And do you think it hit the mark with last year's Tangerine Tango pick?

Perhaps you prefer one of the major paint company's picks for 2013. Glidden is going with a dark and exotic hue, Indigo Night. Benjamin Moore's choice is a warm pastel, Lemon Sorbet. Sherwin-Williams is opting for vintage nostalgia with its Aloe pick. Yolo Colorhouse is considering reclaimed wood and other rustic materials with its subdued natural palette.

Vote: Don't forget to have your say in our 2013 color trends poll!

Anita Roll Murals Carolyn and Company's malachite wall is stunning. I love the pillows and window treatment that were designed by Cristi Holcombe.

Toronto Designers I guess it's another name for Kelly green, which I loved last year! Happy to embrace the new name and continue on with a beautiful fresh green.

Darzy These rooms do look nice. But, the green is just not an interior color for my tastes. The accessories, glass ball, is it for me too.

apennameandthata When cerulean green = emerald green, we can replace colour charts with colour smudges and leave it at that.

olldbobbi I see all that green tile in the bathroom, and I'm thinking of all the homeowners out there with pink or yellow tiled walls who can't wait to get rid of them. I hope I never make that mistake!

midmodfan The only item I like is the faux wood bed spread. But then I never really liked Pantone's favorites of the year, with the exception of last year's Tangerine.

Roots and Rafters Emerald green is ok in small doses (a lamp, the leaves on a flower, etc), but not as a tile color and never, never as the paint for an entire room!

If I had to live in that green lacquered box in the last picture, I think I'd go mad. No thanks. It's great for the few who love it, though.

Becky Harris Interesting - you all seem firmly divided on this one! I would love to be a fly on the wall in the meetings where they choose the color.

Darzy Charmean..the operative word is "accessories". Yes, but kitchen cabinets and tile and walls?
Charmean Neithart Interiors, LLC. Hi Darzy. It's always a matter of degree, I agree. Some people just really like green I suppose. It really looks best contrasted with neutral colors in my opinion.

beckmathis I went "green" back in the days of the Martha Stewart boom- you know, those muted chicken-egg greens but got rid if it all 10 years later. This rich, emerald green is very beautiful and timeless. I like it.

zealart There is something about this color that it makes me really dislike it in most instances. I can take it in small doses for accessories, but once it becomes a wall or a rug, I mentally replace it with something else.

dlglasky I SO called this one!! :)

DUEALBERI A difficult color, to be used in small doses, in the details and accessories, I think :)

tetoette Thanks for the article Becky!
I personally love that color and bold color choices in general - it's really a matter of what rocks your boat emotionally and what it can mean to you (memories, associations with eras, films, atmospheres...etc).

I also love that you pointed out the fact that some colors are literally CHOSEN for us to consume. Recently I discovered with awe (and some kind of disgust at the same time) the existence of The International Colour Authority (ICA), 'a private organization publishing forecasts about colour trends for the coming seasons, to be used by industry designers.' (source: wikipedia).

This makes me really uncomfortable, as i feel that such companies are sort of 'taking color hostage' in order to create trends to increase profit in various design industries. Hence the very limited color palettes in clothing and objects each season (some years it's almost impossible to find a good bright orange, and last year you couldn't escape neon red).

I say FREE COLOR FROM PRIVATE COMPANIES AND GIVE IT BACK TO THE PEOPLE :)

Michelle W I don't think I could have this colour on every wall, either as a feature or in accessories.

apennameandthata As far as my brief search showed, 2012's colour was tangerine. I don't think I ever saw it before until I looked it up again.

MY colour prediction for next year: light beige.

megangbush I won't say the color of the year changes how I decorate. I didn't really use the orange for this year. But I LOVE green in all of its many shades and use this color a good bit in my wardrobe and home accents anyway.

Iyare I I like the color but I dont think I could live with it longterm. It'd be pretty in small doses though because its a luxurious looking color. Definitely couldnt do it in a bedroom because Id get no sleep lol

Casart Coverings Hey Becky, who doesn't love the visions that flash through your mind when you hear the word "emerald"? And they aren't sugar plums! Here's our post today which pays homage to Pantone's 2013 Color of the Year. We started off with a more current visual reference, though. http://www.casartcoverings.com/casartblog/emerald-green-is-more-than-just-a-color-for-christmas/

impax The comment by Tetoette is correct. They also choose the colors of cars, clothing, ect. I remember when we could not find a blue anywhere. Now we have blue. I do happen to love emerald green but just as many have said "in small amounts". I don't feel like we need to be told what colors to choose to make a beautiful room or what to wear. I like the individuality of design and color.

Paintings by Kirsten Elizabeth Gilmore The pillow with green designs is gorgeous, as is the green accent wall with white trim and white frames for paintings. But, I would have to agree with those who vote for using emerald as an accent, not an overall room color.

What would you think of an emerald green painting? I'm tempted to make one, but not sure if homeowners would be interested in that as an accent.

colorsrme On its own, emerald green is very beautiful. However, I feel it's weakness is that it "does not play well with others.".

anewpennameandthata Patricia maia: I don't think that those tiles are emerald green. They look nicer than emerald green to me. IMHO, emerald is more clear and bluish, and those tiles are more muted and yellowish.

lyvia Hmm. These are fairly high contrast images with emerald and white. Emerald would be different as a jewel accent to a soft turquoise room, with some sage green too, with a grey neutral (I have to remember that if we ever have a green felt pool table). I just prefer gradients and adjacent colors. It's a dark color to be so prominent, so I don't want it overwhelming a small space unless it's a very special effect, like a malachite cave powder room. Come to think of it, my TV room is close to that color (teal?), with chocolate brown curtains and a brown/green wildlife wallpaper strip. Darkness is great for movies.

Kat Sheridan I've had an emerald green living room for more than 20 years and have never tired of it. It's accented with a cream sofa, dark crown molding, and animal prints on the chairs and rug. Plus it matches the emerald green insets in the stained glass of the front door. It feels cool in the summer and warm in the winter. I adore it.

msslynne I still think of emerald (and forest green as they are pretty much the same) as the 'dark phase' seems like years back the color was over used a lot along with burgundy and usually blended together-so it may be coming around again for some. I do like it with plenty of white-but truly think it's not the great new color craze coming up-I think a little brighter more light hearted color scheme is still the order of the day, you know the 'lift me up colors' I don't think the huge overdoing it of this color will be big for most though. A shot of hot pink or aqua will still be the scene stealers. My 70 yr old neighbor did just paint her paneled walls emerald though. It can be nice if done right.

colorsrme The more I look at this color in the above pictures, the more obvious it is to me that this is a color that really sings in some settings, but truly flops in others. As an overall cabinet color, or "pop" color for the wood of an island in a kitchen, it is, imo, simply misused. It is a color that deserves "star" treatment in shapely accessories; fabric, pillows, vases, etc. As a wall treatment, it can work if the supporting items of the decor are equally bold in design and color. To me,It is too outre of a color to be, for example, the color of a picture frame. It needs to be used on items worthy of its attention getting status. Also, I notice there are a lot of "interpretations" of what emerald green actually is. And different shades, tones, and values of "emerald green" make a huge difference in how it can be used.

Brenda Bloods reminds me a bit too much of those horrible emerald "marble" formica countertops paired with dark brown colored cabinets... perhaps if they added some peacock flair it would have been easier to accept...? I'm reaching, I know ;)

ArtFabulous So it is Emerald for 2013.I think that it is a gorgeous colour. The Question is how much of it you are able to enjoy without feeling overpowered. It is all about balance and harmony. Colour like emerald is very intense and may be overpowering as a wall colour but can really spice up an interior without breaking your wallet. Use it in accessories or invest in a piece of art.

ditzybrunette I love, LOVE green, and so I love all of the above photos. I could see me doing one or a few of those rooms, if I was single, but alas, I live with a husband and a 15 year old who don't think out of the box like I do, so I doubt if they would be onboard with a lot of these things. The funny thing is, since I love green, I did paint my living room two shades of green and the hallway a suede finished green in 2005, so I must be ahead of the trend---lol!! Husband finally said we need to change things out, so have to dig out all my paint chips and start all over again. I'm thinking red, terracota or some cooperish tone this time around, but I have to compromise with the husband this time since I did everything without his approval last time. LOL!
