Cool White Spaces

Layer shades of white and off-white with light gray for a serene bedroom space. Corral your stuff with clever built-ins to maintain the clean and tidy vibe.

No matter how stressful your day has been, I imagine you would leave all your troubles behind upon entering this soothing sanctuary of a bathroom with its cool white and blue-gray palette.

It can be tricky coming up with a harmonious color palette for an open floor plan. This space, decked out in white, gray and soft greens and blues, hits the mark.

Colors that work with cool white. Benjamin Moore's Baby's Breath is a excellent cool white to use as a color palette base. Add any of these other hues to keep your space fresh, crisp and clean.

Warm White Spaces

Creamy hues mixed with wood tones and soft greens make for a very pleasing palette here. This soothing bedroom has everything you need for enjoying a lazy weekend day: TV, fireplace and bucolic view.

Another charming warm white bedroom. Take a tip from this tidy space and try curating your own decorative accessories — limit the number of items on display at any given time and rotate the pieces in and out of view as you desire.

I tend to favor modern spa-like bathrooms, but I absolutely adore this pretty, traditional bath. By keeping the elements simple and integrating the wall covering and classic claw-foot tub with the interesting architecture of the space, the designer made a cozy place for taking a bath.

Colors that work with warm white. Snowbound from Sherwin-Williams is my go-to warm white. Pair it with any of these accent hues for your own light and cozy space.

Ultrawhite Spaces With Dashes of Bold Color

If you desire a little more drama in your predominantly white space, select one or two bolder hues that you love and use them in small amounts. You can pair any other color with white, but I like the contrast between this leafy green and the white ceiling, floor and wainscoting. The small touches of amber warm everything up.

White walls serve as an excellent backdrop for showcasing artwork, accessories and interesting fixtures. Selectively inject some dashes of bright color for added drama.

Balance any bold color in your mostly white space by using it in more than one place.

Here is another fetching clean and modern minimalist bedroom. The gray and white walls allow the artwork to take center stage.

Colors to try with ultrawhite. If your space if mostly pure white, lucky you! You can inject any color you like, including one of these fun hues.

From left to right (all from Valspar): Mild Evergreen, Fiddlehead Fern, Island Orange, Delightful Moon and Ultra White.

susanintoronto We last painted our living room, dining room and stairs to the second floor in the late 90's. I still love the yellow colour, but it needs to be repainted. So we're planning something that is totally unlike us - we're talking about painting it white. We have a lot of colour in the rooms, so we think it would be a nice change. We still want to have 1 accent wall. Red was our first thought, but we have a lot of red already plus some touches of vibrant blue (like a bright turquoise), so now that's what we're going to do. I can't wait!

pds290 I recently decided to update my dining room by whitewashing the walls. The old pine panelling was dark and yellowed after almost half a century. I love the new-found light in my home!

patricia beharry I tried living in an all white house. Really, really tried. I felt like I was in a snow storm, and every time I went past the paint dept at Home Depot I just stood and salivated after the colour strips, I finally gave in and put some colour on the walls. I have never seen a white rainbow.

Ljiljana Pejic Let’s face it - moving all your stuff to paint the room, than clean everything, put all back - it is biiiig job! I'm always for shades of white...and changing moods and looks of rooms by different accents...So much easier to change cushion covers or add trim to a curtain...or add more colour with some quirky elements - just let your imagination fly!

magrmur My family room is so dark because of the patio cover that blocks the light. The ceiling is a dark knotty pine so the Snowbound white and Queen Anne Lace will really brighten it up

calikym I'm so happy now that I painted over my beige! Now at least I can see other colorful possibilities. Great article.

Ljiljana Pejic magrmur: are you hesitant to paint it? my friends had knotty pine and beams on the ceiling and it was also making their lounge dark – and because of patio awning, too ..they worried that painting it will ruin the value...so eventually they fitted &painted boards in between the beams - if they want to remove them there will be just a few screw holes left - barely visible from the ground...

magrmur Ljiljana Pejic, No, I'm not hesitant but my boyfriend is. It's a big job but I think it's worth it. I love your rooms. The bedroom with the aqua walls grabbed my eye. I had painted one wall in the family room that color and love it. Thanks for your idea.

Panageries Crisp, clean, white. By layering white and off-white in the bathroom shown below, we created a serene space perfect for relaxation. Also shown below, our kitchen design features more dramatic use of white against an aqua blue tile backsplash and citron green accents. If your New Year’s resolution involves a kitchen or bathroom remodel, visit our website at www.panageries.com to see how Panageries might assist in giving your home a fresh start!

Sandra Alger, CID, Fresh Ideas by Sandy Although I love to use color on walls, I love the Oc by BM. CollingwoodBM on the walls and Balboa Mist on the ceilings with Super White Trim by SW. Great article on white.
These photos are the progress of a new home being built. Using white, with cool tones, expanded the space.
