Windsor Chairs Join the Mod Squad
Think Windsor chairs are an Early American relic? These new takes put them squarely in the 21st century
Houzz Contributor. Fresh out of journalism school, I fell into decorating media and immediately discovered a new passion. An Atlanta native, I spent several years as an editor for Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine before making the leap to national publications and websites such as Houzz, Better Homes and Gardens and Southern Accents. I live in Birmingham, Alabama, with my husband and son, who’ve gotten used to coming home and finding the furniture rearranged. When I'm not dragging case goods across the floor, I enjoy good food and wine, college football, music of all kinds, and traveling.

What's more traditional than a Windsor chair? Not much ... except when that chair gets a makeover that gives it a fresh, new attitude. Contemporary interpretations of this centuries-old icon retain the distinctive spindles, splayed legs and graceful lines of their classic cousins — but that's where the similarities end. New profiles, hot paint colors and modern materials carry Windsor style right up to the present.
Each version of the Windsor chair in these spaces stays true to the spirit of the original, but all are uniquely suited to their surroundings. What do you think about these updates? Tell us in the Comments section.

| This stripped-down space represents a contemporary take on rustic lodge style. The wood-burning stove and Windsor-inspired chairs infuse the space with a hint of countryside spirit, while the neutral palette and minimalist surfaces convey urban cool. |

With crisp, smooth planes and pale paint, these chairs have a Scandinavian sensibility. They'd look perfect in a midcentury modern interior, refreshing in a sweet cottage and ultrasleek in a traditional setting.

| Similarly, paint does wonders to teach these chairs new tricks. Dressing each one in a different pastel hue gave them a cheerful and collected air and offset their traditional form. |

MAlps Funny isn't it how stlyes go and come? Take a look at the first picture. Couldve been my great grandmas living room some 50 years ago, and yet with a slightly new twist the exposed fireplace, the chairs, and the wooden logs can now be called modern! Amazing!

spanky_md Some of those chairs have been around since the 50s and 60s. The pink ones, for instance, are the Mademoiselle Chair by Finnish designer Iimari Tapiovaara. The white ones are Paul McCobb (50s). I think the rounded one for $399 is a knockoff of an older design.

cflorov The rustic lodge style is one of our favorites. Its classic meets rustic with a modern twist with warmth. Would you have any images with these chairs that Home Market Deals can get some inspirations in incorporating these chairs in rooms with our AMBIONAIR FLAME electric wall mount fireplaces?

karelina I'd have to sit in them to give a real opinion, though I like the pink ones to look at.
