It's nice to see alternative holiday palettes on tabletops this year. Although there's nothing wrong with going with a traditional Christmas red and green tabletop, Brooke Pratt and Lindsay Reums from Sucre Shop say they're always looking for a special twist when it comes to their holiday setup. "I always push myself to set my table apart from what I'm seeing out there, even if it's just for a small gathering," says Reums. Here's how Sucre Shop and other designers put a fun and fresh twist on the traditional red and green holiday combination this year by picking on-trend colors and shades.

| Aloe Green and Poppy Red Pratt says that this dessert table had one purpose: to make eating ice cream perfectly acceptable in the winter. The typically summery treat is warmed up with hot chocolate and s'more toppings. She incorporated dessert accessories in on-trend colors: aloe green and poppy red. She says, "Poppy red is brighter than the traditional red we see from Christmas past. And aloe green has a cooling appearance and is totally different from the deep greens we associate with the holidays." |

Reams likes making the dessert table or dining table a place of interaction and creativity. "I love the idea of dessert as an activity as opposed to something that's happening to you. The table actually forces guests to create something unique," she says.

Royal Blue and Lemon-Zest Yellow
The gnome decor of this eclectic Portland, Oregon, home adds a playful touch to the dining room, but what really sticks out is the royal blue tablecloth, which ties all the Christmas accessories together.

Here, Pratt put a "spin" on her Hanukkah dessert table (this photo and previous) with letters made out of foam-core board and lit up with globe string lights. (Get step-by-step instructions here.)
Instead of using traditional gold, she brightened the table with yellow, in the sign and sprinkles; it's a kid-friendly hue that's more intense and brighter than traditional gold.

Hot-pink ornaments tie together and personalize each table setting. Each bright-colored ornament takes the place of a formal place card; the names are written with a Sharpie marker and can be removed with alcohol for reuse.

Kevin Retired Decorator Gnomes ! Yuk inside or out they should be banned.... LOL It seems to me that still most of the pics are red & green just not christmasy. I chose silvers grays and mercury glass as a theme this year but still use evergreen to nod to the season. Why not blue,Aqua or orange & earth tones. The yellow even purple & pink that's great . That's what I think of for non traditional colors. Next year Black & white for me. A gentle snow at nite is going to be my theme. Kevin

Lanie Brown Just watched a Mad Men re-run where Don takes Meagan to a Howard-Johnson to study the account and leaves her there - realized why the aloe green & poppy feels "traditional" to me - sky blue/orange is an old-fashioned combo!
