The previous kitchen hadn't been remodeled since the 1980s. While the layout worked well, the Formica surfaces and worn linoleum floor felt outdated to the owners. Maletz kept the straightforward setup but stripped down the surfaces. New walnut lower cabinetry contrasts with holly on the upper cabinets and the custom refrigerator panel.

Cabinetry, shelving: South Slope Woodworks; countertops: Calacatta marble
by Maletz Design
While it doesn't work for everyone, the open shelving in this kitchen made sense for the family. The pieces stored here create a beautiful display in a simple palette. A pantry at the far end "holds all the visual chaos out of sight," says Maletz.

Backsplash: milk glass tile, Waterworks; range/oven: Wolf; sink: Rohl Fireclay; faucet: Waterworks
by Maletz Design
The owners found the folded wood sconce and pendant light themselves, and Maletz seamlessly integrated them into the new design. Both pieces shed indirect light onto the upper cabinetry. Task lighting under the upper cabinets illuminates the countertop.

Calacatta marble countertops, white walls and the milk glass tile backsplash help to offset the wood.

Pendant: Nelson Saucer Lamp; dining table: Tulip Table; chairs: Wegner Wishbone
by Maletz Design
Maletz replaced the linoleum with oak parquet flooring, carefully matching it with the existing flooring throughout the rest of the house. The Saarinen table, George Nelson pendant and Wegner chairs stay true to the owners' love of naturally finished wood and midcentury furniture.

Refrigerator: Sub-Zero 700 TCI; folded sconce and lamp: LZF

dukedude37 I don't get it? I am sorry, but I just don't agree. The cabinets are harsh against the decorative windows. I think this kitchen needs a makeover all over again!

Iyare I I think i might like them better if the top cabinets were painted white or something else.I dont know, it doesnt do it for me but if the owners love it, thats all that matters. Im always happy for renovations....

lissamerritt I think it is all quite beautiful: the two-tone wood, the light, the open shelving together with the closed cupboard. It is all perfectly balanced and clean.

collins design This is one of the most beautiful kitchen rents I have seen. The combination of wood species, marble, and Scandinavian antiques with the existing architecture is so perfectly done. It's lovely, serene, calming, and rich without being overdone or pretentious. Perfect...

The Kitchen Loft Did an equally small, two-tone kitchen for a couple not long ago. My clients went with white paint for the uppers. While different, I think I would prefer white painted uppers here. Would like more info on pantry. Is it nearby? Is it a piece of furniture, or a cabinet like the other kitchen units? Real problem with this kitchen is lighting. Unless there's a street light outside those windows, I think this kitchen will be awfully dark at night...especially the sink side...despite the task lighting, sconce and pendant light. And hopefully, that's an exhaust over the range? No mention in the credits. A wall cabinet that close to the range must be protected.

tcufrog I would love to have seen a close up of the backsplash. I'm a fan of vintage milk glass dishes (I have my grandma's milk glass punch bowl) but have never see milk glass tile.

maddecorator Interesting choices on the wood colors. However, nothing in the room seems to go together. Also, I don't understand why anyone would want marble in their home. I do love the backsplash, though. So much better than that awful subway tile most decorators are so enamored of.

A. Peltier Interiors i like the different mix of wood tones and textures, its something different and pushes the concept of design out of the box.

bja1961 I love the walnut lower cabinets and the detail on the island. I have to agree with a few other viewers that I'm not a fan of the upper cabinets.

vegaspat The thing that strikes a note with me more than anything else is the gorgeous window casings. They are truly magnificent! As to the wood selection made by the homeowners and their designer - if it makes you happy, go with it! I think it turned out just great. Enjoy!

frenchdecor Is this not finished kitchen? There no knobs or handles on cabinets, could be non visible notches on base cabinets. Wall cabinets can't have notches from what I see. Are they sliding in grooves? Does some one know, can explain? It's interesting.

compact I love the Holly cabinets, especially the fridge with matching handles.
The two different shades and types of wood look great against each other.
I presume the doors are touch latches, nice and smooth.
Also nice to see a wood other than Oak being used (the go to wood for kitchen salesmen from the Big Box sellers in the Uk)

Quite like the way you call it backsplash, whilst in the Uk we call is a splashback

Mabbott Seidel Architecture I love the combination of open and closed storage in the upper cabinets. And the custom front on the refrigerator is pretty fantastic. Are those refrigerator pulls out of solid holly? Nice touch.

jojo132 I don't think I've seen holly wood used before - I really like its light, clean look. I also love the chairs, they've been on my wish list for a long time!

yu beautiful cabinets. If it makes the owners happy, that is most important and it does not matter others opinion.

dukedude37 Just want to say, it is true that if the owner loves it, great! That is the important thing. But also, should not be offended by others comments even if they don't agree. They should not be part of an article here on Houzz if they don't want these comments.
