A simple circle can be so many things. Whether it's the sun above us or the plate on a circular dinner table, the circle is definitely part of our everyday lives.
Designers often take a simple shape and use it as a point of departure. These Nordic furniture and mirror designs have grabbed that circle and exploded it, collapsed it, extruded it, hung it, pierced it, deconstructed it and even melted it. The results are, of course, innovative. Some of them are easier to live with than others. But from a design perspective, all are extraordinary to look at.

This chair, called the Lobster, immediately reminds me of both the lobster's curving back and its sharp claws. Yet it's clearly more comfortable and inviting than your average crustacean.

| Layer several circles on top of one another, wrap them into a 3-D shape, then sit down. That seems to be the simple yet stunning premise behind this chair and ottoman. The slim shapes would look beautiful by a big picture window. |

If your inspiration is a circle, you can't get more minimalist than this layered ottoman. The bright blue tone-on-tone colors make it anything but dull. What a great focal point for a modern living space.

| Pull and stretch that circle until you have a long, comforting sofa like this one, then I'll join you for some coffee and the Sunday paper. It's a great example of a modern design that's still very user friendly. |

This amazing circular chair makes me think of Austin Powers for some reason. But in the best way, because wouldn't it be fun to curl up in a purple nest and watch TV tonight?

This hanging mirror is popping up all over — the simple circular shape is sweetly emphasized by the minimalist strap. It would be a lovely counterbalance over a heavy, imposing dresser.

Make a circle more complicated by adding a hole in the middle. This doughnut-style chair is a tad more sophisticated than a Krispy Kreme, however.

A softly upholstered circle looks much more comfortable when melted and draped onto a chair like this one. A set of four would be lovely grouped around a dining table.
