Guest Picks: Style Your Bedroom Like a Boutique Hotel
Gather decorating and furnishing ideas from hip new hotels around the U.S. for a bedroom you'll never want to leave
I am a designer living and working in New York City. I write Fourth Floor Walk Up as a means of expression to document inspiration, projects and the design evolution of my home. I am greatly influenced by the city around me and although New York is expensive and hard on the 99%, I believe that everyone can have a great refuge to come home to – some of us just have to work a little bit harder to attain it.
DECORATING
I grew up within a household centered around decorating with the interest being past down through several generations. My grandmother, mother and I have all had the ability to see spaces for what they are and what they could become. I tend to focus on smaller spaces with modest budgets because I believe a little bit of blood, sweat and tears can make a sweeter home.

From juxtaposing modern and vintage pieces to pulling together utilitarian and luxury elements, the latest boutique hotels are taking chances and stepping up their design game. The mood is heading toward luscious comfort that combines equal parts masculine and feminine style. From the Ace Hotel, which lines its walls with works of famous street artists, to the NoMad Hotel's chicer-than-chic rooms reminiscent of Downton Abbey interiors, there are a few things to take from these interiors for your homes.
I've pooled together my favorite examples from hotels that have set the bar and gathered their signature design features to inspire you to create homes that encourage "staycations" rather than vacations. — Lauren from Fourth Floor Walk Up

The rooms in the NoMad Hotel in New York create a strong contrast between textures and colors with a dark headboard and crisp white walls.

One of my favorite signature elements found in the NoMad Hotel is the leather-upholstered headboard. The rich, dark leather with nailhead trim set against the crisp white walls is so handsome.

Similar to the bedding textiles in the NoMad Hotel, these blue and white pillows by John Robshaw are a quick way to add worldly taste.

This white marble bistro table would work well for taking notes or reading your morning paper.

In addition to the bistro-style tables, well-paired chairs in the Wythe Hotel finish the seating arrangements.

A common design element in boutique hotels is an elegant claw-foot tub. My favorite take on the design is placing it out in the open space of the hotel room.

A design staple in the NoMad Hotel is the reoccurring use of rich gold damask upholstery on standing room screens.
A signature light fixture amongst many of the boutique hotels is the task lamp. They're used on desks, as bedside tables and as wall sconces. The Academy Task swing-arm sconce is an excellent choice for your home at the bedside or in a reading nook.

This Morgan sofa should be dubbed the NoMad sofa, as it's almost a perfect match to the ones used in the NoMad Hotel's Suite Royale.

At the Ace Hotel in New York's midtown, the Loft Suite mixes elements of utilitarian design with midcentury influences. The sofa consists of sectionalized chairs that follow the curve of the building's rotunda. A similar look can be achieved with the sectional Petrie sofa from Crate & Barrel.
Upon entering the Ace Hotel in New York City, the reception desk welcomes you with the illuminated sign reading, "Excelsior." In other places, similar signs reading "Hotel" can be found. These illuminated letters can spell just that, or anything else you'd like.
The Ace Hotel mixes shades of gray in solids and plaids for their bedding collections.

At the Ames Hotel, balloon chairs are placed in the hotel suites and sitting areas as the signature seat. It's quite an investment piece, but this rich royal blue chair is a glamorous option.

At Longman & Eagle in Chicago, many of the headboards were built with reclaimed or raw wood planks to create a rustic look.
The industrial-style pendant is reminiscent of the pendants used in the interiors of the Longman & Eagle.

A classic leather club chair is commonly used in hotel sitting areas and libraries. The masculine and comfortable style can now be found in many of the boutique hotel suites.

If you're going to spend that sort of money why not go for the real thing. It'd be hand made, in it's original form (to keep the drafts out in a draughty croft), unique and even after import costs (with taxes!) cheaper.
