Traditional

Key elements:
The large-scale harlequin floor grounds the room in a traditional pattern. Glass cabinet fronts reflect the light, while the scalloped window treatment and drum pendant lights soften the room.
by COOK ARCHITECTURAL Design Studio
Vintage

Key elements:
The light fixtures have a Parisian flea market look, and French café stools lend industrial style. Subway tile with gray grout is another vintage classic that blends the vent hood into the wall. Traditional hardware and wood trim finish off the look.
by Rebekah Zaveloff
Cottage

Key elements:
The large chalkboard wall is family friendly, casually arranged open shelves make things easygoing, and beadboard is a cottage classic.
by SchappacherWhite Ltd.
Transitional

Key elements: Traditional elements include the checkerboard floor, radiator cover, pendant lights and fabric Roman shade. Contemporary elements include the updated take on Klismos chairs, the lacquered oval table and the simple black frames on the artwork. The mix of traditional and contemporary is well balanced.
by Jessica Lagrange
Farmhouse

Key elements:
Floral wallpaper, a chalkboard, topiaries and farmhouse chairs bring country style to this kitchen. A midcentury modern Tulip Table is an unexpected twist.
by Lauren Liess Interiors
Eclectic

Key elements:
One black accent wall keeps the kitchen from looking washed out. The artwork brings a range of colors to the otherwise strict palette, while dalmatian-print chairs bring whimsy.
by Caitlin Wilson
Graphic

Key elements
: A black and white subway sign sets the tone for this clean-lined galley kitchen. Glossy reflective surfaces and lots of clever lighting tricks brighten the room, which does not receive any natural light.
by Supon Phornirunlit / Naked Decor
Glamorous

Key elements:
Glossy surfaces create a sleek kitchen; dashes of bling from the light fixtures glam up the room.
by Atmosphere Interior Design Inc.
Contemporary

Key elements:
Color blocking creates a powerful graphic geometry in this contemporary kitchen. The black and white palette is broken up by touches of wood and one renegade lime green stool.
by jessop architects
Minimalist

Key elements:
The statement chandelier creates a large focal point over the futuristic stainless steel island. The cabinets practically recede into the walls visually, and skylights make things even brighter.

Paul D'Amico - Period Design My favourite is the classical/factory look by Rebekah Zaviloff and the one with the blackboard by Schappercherwhite. In Rebekah's I like how her classical kitchen does not have that bourgeois feel so many white kitchens do - its the factory input that does it. Schappercherwhite white kitchen could almost be yet another Shakers white - its the blackboard with the chalked doodles that subvert its conformity. With these 2 kitchen's I find contrasting dualities work well.

midmodfan While black and white is truly timeless, I've made the observation that there is almost always *something* that makes the design look dated after some years. Be it that the 8 by 8 tile you chose looks so 1990s, or the doorstyle is no longer appropriate ...

Our new bathrooms are black and white and just the other day I wondered how long it will take until they look dated and why. The mysteries of fashion!

The kitchens you chose are lovely (at least most of them *smile*). One single thing that caught my eye is the light in the upper cabinets in the 'graphic' kitchen. The general lighting is also very good in that room, given it has no window.

Francesca I love many of these kitchens. Some people here on Houzz may know that I am craving a blue, copper and white kitchen but.... I am inspired by the black and white kitchen often. I have been thinking and rethinking this kitchen a whole lot.

Faith Towers Media Loving the wooden elements that help soften the palette in most of these rooms... especially that butcher block add-on countertop! Here are a few other black and white ideas for the rest of your home: http://designfixation.blogspot.com/2012/10/more-black-white.html

beverlynn I absolutely LOVE balck and white kitchens! My kitchen is black with honey colored maple cabinets; was like this when I bought the house. I just don't like to paint wood cabinets.

Francesca Beverlyn - I have stained trim throughout the house. If I were to have a black and white kitchen (which I love...) there's NOTHING I can do but paint the dark wood kitchen cabinets.

I know what you mean about hating to paint wood. I'm still debating on letting the grain show through when I repaint the cabinets. And yes, when I close on my house (today) I will feel a little guilty with the concept of painting perfectly good wood cabinets (but they are such a shade that I cannot bear).

Oh, I just had an idea! (I keep doing that....)
