The console table. With a narrow and high profile, this piece fits nicely in a small entry. It works great as a base for a mirror and lamp and perfectly behind a sofa. A console table that is 33 to 35 inches high is ideal for placement behind a sofa.

The game table. The obvious use of a game table is for cards, chess and other board games. But need an extra dining surface for a dinner party? How about that old game table? It also works great when kids need a space for doing homework.

The pouf. How I love these things! Throw a couple in your family room or den, and you'll never be uncomfortable. They're great for throwing your feet up. Need extra seating for company? Go grab that pouf from the family room. They make easy and casual seats for your family and friends.

A pair of chairs. You'll never regret those extra chairs. Keep them at the table, switch them around in front of a fireplace or stash them in a closet so you can sit down to tie your shoes.

The demilune. Another versatile piece as a nightstand. The rounded shape ensures no hip bumps if you get up during the night. Also, demilune tables make great hallway pieces due to their narrow profile. If you have a pair of demilunes, you can put them together for a round table.

The campaign table. I always snag campaign tables when I see them in stores. I love the leggy utility of these small pieces. They look terrific next to a bathtub and can hold a towel or candle while you soak. They also work nicely next to a lounge chair to hold a book or mug.

The ottoman. I'm a big fan of an ottoman in lieu of a coffee table, especially in the family room — no guilt about putting up your feet here. If the need should arise for a hard surface for flowers, drinks or accessories, just throw on a tray.

The bench. There is always a place for a bench. My favorite place is in front of a bed, where it can be seating or hold clothes. Visually, I just love the way a bench anchors the bed. That same bench will work wonderfully in an entry or behind a sofa. It can also work as a coffee table, which is a bonus if you have a small space.

The chest of drawers. Dressers aren't just for bedrooms anymore. Consider that bedroom piece out in the entry — you can still use the drawers to stash away all your treasures. Need a vanity for your powder room? You can add plumbing to create an elegant statement piece.

One unique chair. Have you ever stumbled upon an eye-catching chair that is completely different from the other pieces in your room? Buy it and let it be a conversation piece. Small occasional chairs look lovely next to a chest or an armoire, and because of their petite size, they can easily be switched around for extra seating.

Also, I live in the Middle East where guests remove their shoes, so I usually keep an unusual and beautiful chair right next to the front door.
