Crazy for Color? Your Kitchen Cabinets Want In

Consider yellow — but not a pastel country-kitchen yellow. Try a saturated egg yolk yellow to add sunshine and smiles. It looks amazing with white walls and blonde wood floors.

With Emerald as Pantone's Color of the Year, all shades of green are in the spotlight. A lighter pastel version of the rich hue looks refreshing as a kitchen cabinet color.

If you like the idea of mint green in the kitchen but don't want to commit to doing the whole kitchen this color, apply it just to the island and keep the other cabinets white. Many new kitchens are showing a mix of finishes, and an island is a good place to play with color.

If you just can't imagine anything except pristine white kitchen cabinets, but you are drawn to a little mint, feature it in a small area, such as a new tile backsplash.

A green closer to olive paired with marble accents will keep your kitchen looking classic for years to come.

Shades of turquoise work with retro-style kitchens for a nostalgic wink — and also look great in modern kitchens.

Turquoise can be overbearing in large doses, so I advise using it sparingly. This kitchen uses just the right amount on the upper cabinet frames, balanced with warm wood lower cabinets and terra-cotta floor tiles.

I do like turquoise, peacock and robin's egg blue, especially for laundry cabinets — as an offshoot to the kitchen instead of on the prime real estate.

Black as a cabinet color choice is catching on like wildfire in some kitchens.

Navy is this year's black. When black seems too masculine or gloomy, navy will do in a pinch to add neat and preppy charm. It looks especially good paired with white upper cabinets.

Navy also looks fantastic with this year's metal of choice: copper. Whether you use copper as the finish for lighting, plumbing fixtures or hardware, or simply display your collection of copper pots and pans, think navy for at least part of your kitchen.

Painting my laminate cabinets was my next project in our house rejuvination. We have since bought a newer home and are renovating so I didn't get to the laminate painting phase. I have done quite a bit of research on painting laminate and what I have gathered is that if you properly prime, just about anything can be painted. I was going to pruchase a primer that was made for plastic, glass etc (don't know the brand) but ended up not needing it. Search online about painting laminate and find a good primer and paint then go for it! Now that I think of it, I did once paint our laminate bathroom vanity top and sealed it well with several coats of urathane and it lasted for years until we finally got a new top. It was our only bathroom and we had 2 teenagers at home.
