Why go for a single-color accent wall when you can have a giant colorful tiger mural presiding over your living room? Having this much color and pattern allows the rest of the room to be either spare or ariot with more color and pattern. This one straddles the two.

This calm and traditional living room happens to have two giant pink poodles standing guard. They certainly save it from ever being boring.

Another calm, traditional room with a surprising jolt: this time, larger-than-life guests dressed for a salon.

The uniting factors in this colorful room are the touches of that orangey red and pattern, pattern everywhere.

This high-end bordello-style room shows real commitment to color, texture and opulence. Nothing subtle here.

If you really love it, go ahead and put it everywhere.

This one-of-a-kind living room has committed to theme — midcentury — and bold color. The mural-size black and white photo gives it a cinematic drama, almost as if the scene is actually moving.

A very traditional arrangement of very traditional furniture that just happens to be done in neon brights. It has an urban, pop art feel.

Bored with your regular old living room, your gray sectional and your red rug? Spice them up with a comic book character. Works every time.

A hanging pod instead of a sofa, a round bookshelf instead of a rectangle and a rainbow wall instead of beige. Bam.

Large glass garage doors that open to the outdoors beat regular old double-hungs any day.
Modern Living Room
It's like a tree house for grown-ups.

A conversation pit surrounded by water assures that your chitchat stays private.

Without the wall of glass, this room is just another elegant modernist box. With it, it's one of the most awe-inspiring and beautiful living rooms I've ever seen.

jkristamagee Oh the neon one is soooo cute! My days feel like that picture looks all day every day lol so personally I do love my calm living room but that doesn't change the fact that this idea book is creative fun and adorable. Thank you so much for this. All of these rooms make me think "I would love to know these people!"

scarbowcow Thanks for saying it for me, Sigrid!
Most of these rooms struck me as 'a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.' That said, the round bookcase is interesting and the last picture with that view... wow.

midmodfan The last photo is one of my all time favorites and I could also live in the tree house for grown ups. The others are not my taste at all, but definitely interesting to look at, fun to visite, and even inspiring to a certain extent. We're all different, aren't we?

Peggi Worth I love all of them and I'd so like to meet the people with the big pink poodles.

bruinette The people with the pink poodles are obviously dog lovers ... check out the cushions and even the dachshund pattern on the trays on the coffee table!
I absolutely love number 5, the bordello-like room. Sooooo rich & decadent looking, and hugely comfortable, I could see myself spending hours lounging on that sofa :)

katwishing The poodle made me smile. Thanks for sharing these funky living rooms. It's amazing how different taste can be, and that's the way it should be. It makes life more interesting. Now that "tree house" home is one I would personally love to live in!

frenchdecor I love this article, I was waiting it for a long time, finally!!! I am not commenting what I don't like, or something that looks insane, unique, pretty, creative, they are anything but boring. Those living rooms sparked more than one idea I would never come up with myself, not necessary to copy them fully.

Dolores Stewart Beautiful "out-of-the-box" ideas bring these spaces to lives extraordinaire. Loved them all!

Mona These are a gutsy, colorful, collection of rooms obviously loved by their creators, which I thoroughly enjoyed to view. It oozes a no fear approach to design & color and pushes the boundaries of the safe zones........especially the plaid ceiling.... Love it!

cami19 These pics were fun to look at. I love the white room with the black chandeliers and neon furniture -- that's what I call a pop of color!

alibonelli I applaud each and every one of these homeowners for going against the 'norm' and staying true to what they love. It is dramatic. It gets people talking. And I bet they go into these rooms everyday and truly relax. I would love to be friends with all of them because they must be courageous, fun people.

CAROLE MEYER These rooms are fun to look at. I love the conversation pit surrounded by water. I noticed that they make the pool area a darker blue than the ocean beyond which adds another dimension to that space.

bubsy the glass garage doors are very nice, but when open, the residents must live in an area none of us know about, that doesn't have mosquitoes, bugs, etc.
celebrategreen Almost all these rooms are so much better than the boring so-called "sophisticated" living rooms that most people seem to crave. For me, whimsy, surprise and color are what make life worth living. Most living rooms speak to the owners' need for safety, not creativity, fun and individuality. But then, we're all different.

sclawson A house should be what you love if it's going to be a home. LOVE the doggie pillows, but sure couldn't stand those poodle statues. To each his/her own.

Favreau Design As a designer who appreciates high concept, I applaud these rooms. True, it is not for everyone, but I much more appreciate originality and artistry over everything matching and from a big box store. Bravo to these brave and innovative designers. Love the Snyder, Edison and Muller rooms. Here are a couple from my files.

Vintage Renewal I am in LOVE with the first room! Amazing!

digsblues I loved seeing all of the rooms. They are definately not the same old boring ideas that you see in furniture stores. My choice would be one of the ones with huge windows, and trees outside. Lovely, though the practical side of me worries about keeping the windows clean.

The room with the poodles is hilarious! Can you imagine the look on first time guests' faces when they step into the livingroom? I'd like to see that, and hear the conversation that follows.

And I do love color, but prefer it in one area of the room, instead of spread throughout.

Thanks for the article. My livingroom is looking too bland. It will be fun to add some whimsey.

Pangaea Interior Design, Portland, OR What a breath of fresh air! I love it when people have the guts and imagination to step out of the box and create artistic - fun - visually arresting - thought provoking, rooms that express their truly unique style. Nobody else needs to like it as long as the people living there love it. I do love that unexpected, larger than life mural of people in between the arches. A real show-stopper of a room!

Kat Sheridan I adore all these rooms, especially the one with the neon furntiure. That so suits my taste! I also adore the one with the portraits on the wall. The one on the right is Madame X by John Singer Sargant, and I suspect the rest are also by Sargant. Not a bad thing to have on the walls. I love that they've "stepped out of their frames" and joined the party!

Francesca I appreciate that these might not be for all people. But rather than saying it's horrendous or ugly or whatever, find a way to criticize it constructively. Personally, I don't like one of these photos, as the mix of patterns is jarring to my eyes.

tammis The last two pictures are sweet but the rest...???? NOT!

Pangaea Interior Design, Portland, OR Francesca -- Thank you so much for saying that. Unfortunately with the anonymity of the internet, common courtesy seems to fly out the window. There is just no call to be insulting to the people who allow their homes to be shown. The people who live in these homes DO see these comments. Treating others as you'd like to be treated yourself if it were your home being shown here isn't too much to ask.
Favreau Design Well said Francesca. This is not a trashy site. If you can't act like a mature adult go somewhere else. This site does not exist for people who play armchair decorator to nastily critique those of us who love the art form and nourish creativity and diversity. You can dislike a design without being nasty. Try it you may just learn something.

onthefence Wow, I'd take that garage door room and the full glass wall room in a heartbeat!

The other rooms show a lot of personality, style and thought. Probably not my style, but they're cool nonetheless.

The pink poodle room cracks me up ;-) Can you imagine coming home to that in the evening after a long brutal tiring day at work? That room would just make me happy.

waterbabies I loved the pop of quirkiness in each of these living spaces!!

wantsideas The conversation pit surrounded by water....yes I could live there. The traditional room with the neon colors certainly caught my eye. While not a big fan of neon, the black in the room makes it work. While both are not in my price range it's fun to look at.

knesci The poodle room is brilliant in that the accessories (poodles, pillows and table or tablecloth) can be changed easily. Switch out the poodles and dog pillows for something more mainstream and the room still works. lizoregon included a reference to the designer that shows this room two ways.
That said, the color and whimsy of many of these rooms make me want to be on the guest list. Thank you homeowners for sharing your sanctuaries with us!

A. Peltier Interiors I love the room by Decoredemon with the large vintage photograph on the wall, the arched brick wall and red chandelier. Way too cool!
aeykelbo I love the tiger room. Wish I had the cojones to go all out like that. But it's definitely harder to go bold when you live in a small space with low ceilings and bad lighting! Still, all of these homeowners deserve kudos for going all out and designing spaces that they love.

Actually... I take part of that back. The "bordello-style" room (horrible way to describe that, by the way) seems to have very low ceilings. Does it actually, or is that the effect of the dense color?

millerfarm32202 It seems by the comments that some people take life way too serious! I might not be able to live with the 6 foot tall poodles but parts of every single room could add some pop or wow to my life and I could use it on these bleary winter days in Iowa! Thanks for the inspiration, I love something of every one!

the_misfit I WANT THOSE POODLES. And I wouldn't want them for their contribution to the "dog lover" theme (though I do love my dog) - I would want them because they leap out and assault the onlooker in a way that I rather think the average onlooker needs. "Poodles? What poodles? George, do YOU see any poodles?"

Granted, my taste is quite traditional, and most of these rooms are really not (and my house isn't nearly this wild - although I HAVE been looking for a bargain on a real taxidermied moose-head to hang in my wee powder room. I am aware that it would be horrifying to visitors. THAT'S WHY I WANT ONE). But there is PERSONALITY here, and an AESTHETIC, and I cannot not love that. These are people's HOMES - crazy, strange people, with whom I would love to sit down at a dinner party. Beige I hate. People who have all-beige living rooms would not be fun at dinner. (And their dining rooms would probably depress me, too.)

Love this collection! Maybe fanciful dining rooms or kitchens next???

silverscreenstar I WANT the tiger whatever in the first room, DESPARATELY. Is it a carpet, a wall hanging, a tapestry, or what?
So, what IS it and how can I get one?
Thanks so much to whoever knows, and is kind enough to respond!
lizoregon Silverscreenstar, I clicked on the tiger picture and got on the artist's website, then followed the link to the online distributer of the tiger mural. It looks like it's in Spain, but there is a phone number. Here is the link. http://bloompapers.com/es/papel-pintado-artistas-bloom/catalina-estrada/tiger.html
I hope you can get the tiger. He's wonderful! :-)

Traci Sims I knew a guy who had a ten foot high wall of plants in his living room...It was the divider between the living room and the kitchen...His wall of books was actually a secret doorway to the bath room...He also had toys and puzzles for his guests to play with while he cooked wonderful, creative meals in his incredible kitchen...It was the most magical house I had ever visited and I have tried to create that sense of fun and whimsy in my own space...I love these rooms, HOUZZ....

tammis Please! The people who show their homes on these sites don't care what other people think...that is what this site is all about..they are sure of themselves and what they like.....and are just sharing......what other people like and don't like, who cares... stop worrying so much!

tammis The previous comment (by Aileen) has nothing to do with the above opinion :) It was earlier comments that provoked this opinion. Just saying :)
