What isn't going on in this room? There are traditional silk drapes, a zebra rug, a formal ottoman and bright pink wallpaper. It would be a daring eclectic beauty even without the graffiti mural, but add that and it's a work of art. It's so crazy and mixed up that it works.
by Erika Bierman Photography
It's one thing to chose lime green and hot pink as your colors, but it's a whole other level to use them in layers of busy patterns and bright, bold images.
by Jeffers Design Group
This is over-the-top femininity and glamour (I think of Lana Turner or Liz Taylor when I see that peacock) combined with an eclectic mix of traditional pieces. Oh, and then there's that acrylic crystal bed from the planet Krypton.
by Woodson & Rummerfield's House of Design
When my son was obsessed with pirates, he got a Playmobil pirate island. The little boy whose room this is got a ship embedded in the wall and his own gangplank. Not bad.
by Kuhl Design Build LLC
This little girl is either going to grow up to be pageant princess, or she's going to rebel and become a punk rock biker.
by Bellissimo Interiors
Another fantasy kids' bedroom but with a clean, modern look and some real staying power. Even an adult could be happy sleeping under this tree.
by Incorporated
See? The adults who live here are presumably happy sleeping under a tree. I love this bed.
Under the Apple Tree Canopy Bed - modern romantic Scandinavian design
This bedroom itself is all Zen minimalism. But the walls (or lack thereof) are pretty dramatic.
by DWYER DESIGN
Midcentury modern meets African motifs, with just a little bit of dungeon chic thrown in for good measure.
by Miller Interior Design, LLC
I have truly never seen anything like this, and I have no design terms to explain it. The shapes in the ceiling and wall remind me of cells splitting. Saturated biological modern?

logicbutton "Mitosis chic"

"Whimsical" should describe it, in my opinion, but that word's become so diluted, it's almost meaningless now.

In other news, wow, the combination of styles in that second-to-last picture. Who knew?

astraea I kind of resent the implication that bedrooms are either boring or over-the-top, without any middle-ground .. which I bet is where most of us fall! I also bet that a lot of the people who have the rooms displayed in the article, are "in the business" or wealthy, and can afford to redecorate every few years, when their "whimsical" designs become too "5 minutes ago". And with children's rooms; I'm sure that their tastes change even more frequently, as they grow up; one year Snow White, the next year Dora the Explorer, followed by beautiful vampires.

Some of the designs here have so much going on, I can only imagine having very colorful nightmares.

jagarrou "Saturated biological modern" LOL. The inside of my arterial pathways?

That pink princess room makes me homicidal. Maybe it should be located just across the hall from the dungeon bedroom.

The rest I LOVE. Especially #1. There, someone really understands color, layering and the best attributes of eclecticism (as opposed to the worst, which is just a hot mess).

Francesca 1) Normal? Who needs normal? I'm definitely not normal.

2) I think I have posted before that if you don't have anything nice to say at least be polite in the criticism. Of course, we live in the 21st century where 'politeness' is considered 'staid and old fashioned'. I think that's sad.

3) I, the one who loves a little bit of quirk, am most in love with the zen bedroom, the 'tree bed' and (if only it weren't pink) the peacock room with the 'bed from Krypton'. The first one looks like how my rooms would become if I had a lot of money and too much on my mind. *smiles*
3 months ago · ·
Vivian Rase Love the first one. I'd do it myself minus the one graffiti above the bed.
Sleeping in the room with no walls would be heaven. I have french doors in my bedroom that I love to open wide (weather permitting) to sleep. I never sleep better than when the doors are open, it's cold outside and I snuggle down deep under a thick covering of blankets.

And I see lighting in the last room...a giant lighted jax piece!

Graf Developments I'll say that most of these are not in my taste, but isn't that the point. We create what makes each of us feel good. The great thing about those of us with great imaginations and the willingness to try new things is, we can try an idea for a while and on a whim, try something completely different. Just don't let life ever be boring and blah!
Also, as it was said before me, no need to be rude. Look at what Rex Reed did to that wonderful, talented actress who is heavy in stature, but greater is so many ways. There's no place for that in the creative world.

marsia I love idea books like this that are all different styles of daring. I think making your house into your own work of art is so inspiring and interesting. I agree wholeheartedly with Francesca that anger and disrespect seem to be in vogue in the society in general now, which is so strange given how amazing the twenty-something generation is - so kind and polite and respectful. I wish people would see that if you respect others it gives them an invitation to respect you back. Anyway, very off-topic. Great daring ideas that really go for it!

digsblues I love the Zen minimalist bedroom in the trees. That will be the one I get if I win the lottery.

I also am drawn to the first bedroom. It looks like a fairly small alcove. When you want to change, just paint over the walls, easy peasy. When the winter days get dark and dreary, I've been known to change a room in my home. Number one looks like it was a lot of fun doing!

Enjoyed seeing the cowboy room shown by Graf Developments too. It's always enjoyable to peak at what others are doing.

Graf Developments Thanks Digs!
Most of that was actually reused materials from the families grannie's house out on a lonely stretch of highway in the middle of Texas. The wood siding, roof, screen door, bedroom door, and even the old oil lamp which I ran power to to create a night light for the kids. Oh, the old porch used to be the cistern that held their drinking water.

Dina Goebel I used to create Fantasy Bedheads for clients who were daring in their bedroom designs. They have been sent all over the US, NZ, Caribbean and Aus. I found it was a private means for people to be more expressive than their day time lives allowed.

Here are a few examples below:

neitz Every master bedroom I've decorated in my past 3 houses has had Restoration Hardware "Silver Sage" as the paint color because I found the shade that soothes my soul. trasgorshek Ok, gotta disagree with some of the comments here. The first house was done for a charity project, showhouse if you will, where designers take a room and use their own resources to redo for the showhouse and exposure. When you dissect the room, it's actually done quite well! Beautiful in fact. These might not be everyone's taste but you've got to respect the design that goes into them. Fabulous examples of textiles, art, architectural elements, etc.

corinan Strangely enough, pink used to be the color for baby boys, as it was a lighter version of red, a strong masculine color, then it changed about 100 years ago. Pale blue was for girls. Funny how we take a cultural choice and think it is a biological imperative.

Anyway, you don't see the decor when your eyes are closed.

Traci Sims I love the creativity of these bedrooms....The last one reminds me of the milk bar from "A Clockwork Orange", but I think that's fun...I am passionate about trees so the bedrooms featuring these were a hit (I used to have one in my bedroom)...I think the point is this: CREATIVES CANNOT LIVE WITH VANILLA....I get bored to TEARS with all of the pastels and "Martha Stewart beige and blue"-TERRIFYING!! Thank you, HOUZZ, for showing how the "other side" lives.....

grizzly I am surprised to see so many favorable comments about the first room. I shouldn't be though. There is something about that room that draws me to it . It is a very beautiful room and very interesting. I think that it defies description or catagorization and the best word I can find for it it "captivating".
beautysblush Something sort of draws me to the first bedroom also. I think it is because it is one of those rooms that has all my favorite things in it. It is a room to be enjoyed by the one who created it. I also like the Zen bedroom and the pink glamour bedroom. I like the pictures that others have posted of their bedroom and the quitts. gwen47 While I generally gravitate to simple design and earthtones, I loved most of these rooms and think they work because they are so over the top. I might even try some of these ideas in my guest/studio room.

patricia beharry I,too, sleep with my eyes closed. Now, I don't live in the US, so I am not hypersensitive, and don't have to be politically correct with my humour. That said, being a black person, the African room with all those chains hanging from the ceiling is giving me nightmares. LOL.
amylouizz @patrician beharry I'm with you re political correctness and hypersensitivity, only I am a US citizen. Difference is that I live in little town in South Dakota, where we are too backwards to be compassionate. I'm also not black, so wouldn't dare make the chains comments lest I get gobsmacked by the enlightened types who live in The Big Cities yonder. Of course, I didn't even think of the chains that way.

The Kidney Room reminds me of when I cut up raw liver for the cat this am.

jkristamagee Well some people do not like calm and soothing for their bedrooms- or their house as a whole- maybe even their life! I literally know a girl who sleeps in a REAL casket! No joke- she loves that sort of stuff- Is it my choice of a bed? No no but she is probably one of the sweetest, unselfish people I know and indeed very interesting lol. Point is that some of you need to get out of the little island you call home and realize that everyone is not the same as you and they probably look at your homes and think " wow- how depressing can you get!?". I do love my neutrals and to add pops of color with accessories and such so in reality , none of these rooms are my home but they are beautiful. My son would love absolutely love love love the pirate ship and the western room that was posted. Very fun - thanks for sharing

robungar Am I missing something here? Is the last room not a rendering?
Samantha Schoech robungar: it is indeed a rendering. But it is still someone's idea of a cool bedroom!
robungar @Samantha Schoech Thanks for the clarification. I just think it's a little unfair to compare real rooms to renderings. I wouldn't mind seeing a gallery of just renderings, but it seems awkward to compare the two.
bubblyjock @ robungar and Samantha Schoech - what is meant by "rendering" - is it a design term, or are you doing the double-entendre thing, with reference to the butchery skill of removing of fat and flesh from bones?

I'm not pulling your leg, honest, I'm genuinely curious!
Samantha Schoech bubblyjock: a rendering is a full color design drawing, once drawn by hand, but now digitally rendered. It's meant to show a space as it will eventually look when completed.

Michael In the "Book of Tea" there is a passage about a Japanese tea master who came to replace the former master after his death. As is tradition, the Japanese tea master began to redecorate the tea house according to his liking. After he was done he invited all the monks into the tea house to see what he had done. Over and over the monks told him how much more they liked his decorating than the last tea master. The new tea master hung his head in sadness from hearing these comments. He stated that the former master must have been a much better tea master because he had succeeded in decorating the tea house to his own liking and not to please others as he had. That is what all these rooms remind me of; people who did them to please themselves and not others.

Graf Developments I like the story, but I'm not sure I agree with the sentiment.
I have to admit that in my case I create my spaces for my taste and to make me happy, but I really enjoy it when others comment about how great my place is and how much they wish they could do the same in their homes. When I have done something that makes all of us happy, I know I've done well.

Amy The first three rooms look just like a little girl's imagination has sprouted and come to life. I love these designs, and how the parents have allowed their kids to have such bright colors. Kudos to all of them!
Michael @Graf Developments-The point of the story is not that it is bad to receive compliments but that being true to oneself and not abandoning oneself in order to receive the approval of others is an element of spiritual/psychological enlightenment. Many of these interiors are definitely unique to the point that they have received harsh ridicule (and sometimes cruel) from others (cat vomit?). This is a definite sign that shows that at least some of these people were willing to forgo doing what is safe and known to meet the approval of the masses and do what their heart desired. In actuality, some of the interiors that have received the most criticism are actually quite sophisticated to the point that it would be expected that those who are of a more mundane mindset, (which most are) would criticize them. The Pottery Barns and Restoration Hardwares of the world might appeal to most but are hardly a unique expression of anyones soul. The last interior which has received some very harsh criticism is actually reminiscent of the great Danish designer Verner Panton. Panton is one of the most prolific designers of the 20th century and most of his designs are in the finest museums throughout the world. His designs was responsible for much of the set design for the iconic flm "2001 A Space Odyssey". 40 yaars later he is appreciated by the most sophisticated of tastes. A good example of someone who stayed true to his soul.

sowmya_padki Room number three - the feminine room- must belong to some Wealthy Business Manager's spoilt daughter. Never seen a room like that, not even in movies! Also, room number five- the little girls room- definitely means the girl is growing up as a pageant princess. Good thinking. Some of these rooms are so unrealistic to normal, not rich people like us. Room one, on the other hand, is realistic. It's small, yet furnished beautifully. My only recommendation- try and involve some normal, medium sized rooms in these pics so the ordinaries like us can get some reachable inspiration, thanks for everything else!
Vivian Rase @sowmya_padki I agree with you about #3. It's definitely pink overload. Not particularly calming for a baby. Some commenters have mentioned that it would be difficult to sleep in some of the rooms and I have to agree. Yes, I sleep with my eyes closed, but I always spend some time in my bedroom watching a little tv and then reading to unwind before falling asleep. Contrary to unwinding I would find my senses being over stimulated in some of the rooms

Miller Interior Design, LLC Let's get some more reactions. This should be fun. The following are fanciful for fundraisers, so I wouldn't imagine anyone in their right mind actually sleeping here, but what a blast to create for that eccentric someone. Lex Luthor Lady, The Young Lady's Fantasy Suite is for your worst nightmare - ha! Such a delight to create just the same. :O) The second is a Victorian interpretation of French Chinoiserie in a double split complementary color scheme, aka, good design gone terribly wrong for the fun of it! I don't have enough complements for the extraordinary crafts people who walked alongside me, perhaps tongue in cheek, to bring these spaces into three dimensions. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder? ;) Find me at millerinteriordesign.com - cheers.
