8 Pink and Purple Rooms Sans Sugar Shock
Little-girl dreams find grown-up expression in rooms that work pink and purple into chic and sophisticated palettes
Houzz Contributor. Fresh out of journalism school, I fell into decorating media and immediately discovered a new passion. An Atlanta native, I spent several years as an editor for Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine before making the leap to national publications and websites such as Houzz, Better Homes and Gardens and Southern Accents. I live in Birmingham, Alabama, with my husband and son, who’ve gotten used to coming home and finding the furniture rearranged. When I'm not dragging case goods across the floor, I enjoy good food and wine, college football, music of all kinds, and traveling.

When I was little, I desperately wanted a "princess" bedroom: a giant white iron bed, a flouncy canopy and, most of all, an explosion of pink and purple, right down to the tiebacks on the ruffled curtains. My vision at that age wasn't exactly a study in chic (it may or may not have included giant grape-colored flowers and gumball-pink polka dots).
My mom, sensible as always, told me that if I still loved the idea in five years, we'd make it happen. I think you know the ending.
Yet a little part of me still loves that pink and purple combo, and in these dreary days of winter, it seems like just the thing to brighten a household mood. I don't really have a place for this palette in my home, and you may not either, but we can all dream. Here are eight spaces that bring pink and purple from girlish fantasy to design-smart reality.

This acid-tinged pink coverlet and bold rug add bite to the sweet lavender walls. Swap out the accessories and the space would be perfect for a young girl, but here it takes on a bohemian chic.
The side chairs around this dining table wear a purple that's almost gray, which calms down the fuchsia and hot-pink tones in the other fabrics.

Without the visual, a pink- and purple-tiled bathroom sounds like ... well, not the best idea. But this thoughtfully designed space is a breath of fresh air.
Colorful tiles interspersed with white ones and a single rosy pink accent wall infuse the setting with just enough hue to liven it up. Oh, and that pink sink? A knockout.

Deep eggplant, lavender and magenta shades combine for an unexpectedly dignified bedroom palette. Grayed-down whites help to mute the brighter colors' intensity.

| Here's how to go feminine without getting prissy. Restrained colors, an Asian-style print on the headboard, mod Jonathan Adler lamps and preppy monograms combine for a gentle, global-inspired boudoir. |

Full-on girly yet not at all cloying, this funky space celebrates pink and purple's mod side. Those two watermelon-colored fauteuil chairs spark the room and give it its edge.

| Pink and purple venture outside in this lovely landscape, which some might call an outdoor room: A pair of bubblegum-colored chairs blends beautifully with the purple flowers in the garden. Friend or foe? Tell us what you think about pink and purple together. |

oh but i must draw the line at the pink bathroom lol
Not one single person who has seen this ghastly horror has questioned my decision to paint it. Not even my husband, who thinks one of the women in his life should like the room (my daughter turned up her nose, too) and doesn't want to pay for the painter.
Imagine, 1985 - a lovely canopy bed with pink and green fabric, the carpet - green, the walls pink. Three windows with ruffled curtains.... Yeah, I am not a fan of pink anymore. But I do love purple.
BTW when I was young my room was pink. When I outgrew it I painted it orange but then went back to multiple layers of metallic pink.
Smile.
I don't care for girly pink but love fuschia and raspberry.
I guess I just have to go outside to get my purple and pink on. Love Mexican Sage, Mexican Heather and Rock Roses together!
WOW! Love them both - especially the rug. Are your washer and dryer pink too? Or is that just the way the light reflects off that ceiling?
You are daring girl! My hub would never go for that - even in the laundry room where he spends less than one minute per week.
The bathroom in the old side of the house had that speckled pink tile in the tub surround that looked like someone splattered pepto bismol on the walls. Luckily the tub was white.
It had pea green carpet and wallpaper with little pink flowers on it. I said "Whatever is under this carpet cannot possibly be worse... and it was! 4x4 solid pepto-pink tiles!
Because of limited funds - and the fact that the way they installed tile in the 50's it would still be there after the apocolypse - we decided to keep the wall tile. We tore off the wallpaper and painted the walls cranberry red. Then we replaced the floor tile with a travertine-look porcelain that had the slightest tinge of peachy pink in it.
The bathroom went from awful to fab and funky for about $500 - including labor. Amazing what paint will do. The first coat of that cranberry paint was heck-a scary though. It looked magenta.
The washer/dryer are white, but I see what you mean on them looking pink too.
