simps214 I'll take a herringbone pattern anywhere I can get it and these are beautiful examples with firebrick.

The inside of my fireplaces look like the grimy ones on the set of Mary Poppins before the chimney sweeps show up : P

Holly Marder I love the herringbone pattern too! Lovely ideabook, Rachel, thank you.

amaebi519 We used marble tile in a herringbone pattern to make what I call a 'candleplace' - none of the maintenance, etc. of a real fireplace and it adds character to our living room. Going to add an antique mantel as well (1913). Love it!

bubblyjock Nice! What's also appealingly correct about most of these images is that the fireplaces are "portrait" shaped - taller than they are wide - vs "landscape" - wider than tall - which is more modern. I find the former more pleasing to the eye, but it's hard to find new nowadays.

The fireplace in the Hugh Jefferson Randolph Architects image is also more of a Rumford Fireplace, which is more pleasing visually - and throws out a ton of heat.

A. Peltier Interiors First, I am in love with herringbone and would put it everywhere if I could. Second, I know these photos were some great examples of fireplaces and how to use herringbone, but the rest of all of these rooms were absolutely amazing too!

Details of Design The herringbone really makes a difference in a room with a fireplace. It adds details which are extremely important and a lot of character.

mrsbrinder We just bought an ethanol fireplace with a plain black metal interior. How can the herringbone be installed/ adhered to the metal?

marilynlapham Love the white washed brick look. Does anyone know if it is possible to create this look on traditional red brick. Would it be possible to accomplish this with a wet rag and white paint?? Or, is there another way of getting the look??

Michael Eric Dale a trick that most people don't yet know is that for isokern and firerock masonry component fireplace, the large bricks that come with the units can be sawn in half and either stacked in the conventional way or in a pattern. The bricks take on more of a Roman brick dimension and look so much better than the standard brick.
